eproxus··on Asdf – language tool version manager
I don’t agree.

As a proof of concept I wrote a Fish native version of the function that figures out what local version of a tool to use I do actually use it to show the currently selected version in my shell prompt. The asdf version was unusable in a shell prompt.

It goes through the parent directory structure up until the top level root directory and finds the first .tool-versions file and parses out the version of a specific tool.

The asdf native shim takes ~100 ms in Bash (no idea if it can be optimized, but I assume so). My Fish version takes ~1 ms.

What’s new is that you can tap the hourly forecast card, or the Today entry in the 10-day forecast and get a historical graph for the current day at least.

But yeah, not possible to check yesterday’s weather.

eproxus··on Breaking all macOS security layers with a single vulnerability
I never understood why TextEdit just doesn’t silently exit and open all the unsaved windows the next time. I thought that was the point if this whole feature? (That’s exactly how Sublime Text implements it and I love it. I use a lot of unsaved scratch buffers for temporary notes).

It feels like the worst of both worlds…

What are you arguing for actually? Using ChromeOS and never installing a native app?

But it’s also about how you get there. If you only expose kids to pictures of white male doctors you’re going to give them a bias which will shape their lives and by extension the society around them.

I think techno libertarian suggestions like these are dangerous because they assume there’s one “canonical” place to fix these issues and all other places can just reflect the status quo, without affecting it (which in my opinion is not possible).

It’s like the old saying “dress for the job you want, not the job you have”.

eproxus··on Linux 5.19
I have that luxury but the next round I’ll just get one powerful laptop and a great screen instead.

It’s way too much work syncing workspaces, repos, configuration, installed software, etc.

eproxus··on Show HN: Ants Sandbox - an ants simulator
Personally I like the production chains in Cities Skylines. I feel they add purpose to the design of the road network and handling of traffic problems. I just wish the AI was a ton better (there are a few mods that help though).
eproxus··on Ask HN: What's is your go to toolset for simple front end development?
As a non-js developer I found Alpine lacking. In the examples they use something like await axios get to get new content. I have no idea what any of those mean or why they have to there in that order with that syntax.

HTMX makes this incredibly simple:

    <div hx-get="/example">Get Some HTML</div>
eproxus··on Playstation Store removes Studiocanal movies, no refunds offered
Things like subtitles and even audio tracks has to be the laziest mistakes by these companies. How hard can it be to copy all subtitle files to all folder in the CDN? (I know, it's probably a bit more complicated than that, but it can't be much).

If an movie doesn't even have the original audio track, it'll just lead me to unsubscribe faster.

eproxus··on New MacBook Air with M2
Would it be equally weird or correct to write the macOS? After all, it’s short for “Mac Operating System”.

I’m not a native speaker so I’m genuinely curious.

eproxus··on Vite – Next Generation Front End Tooling
How would one use it together with a backend that already serves the frontend code? As a compiler only?
eproxus··on WeatherKit
Why not both? If privacy is another thing that sells, then it’s a win-win for them. Especially since no-one else seems to care about it.

Doesn’t selecting Preview (instead of the folder, as suggested in the article) let you skip the saving-to-disk part?
eproxus··on The hunt for a cluster-killer Erlang bug (2021)
From what I heard they tried to replace everything with a new Java system (the old "let's rewrite everything from scratch" trap) and didn't or only partially succeeded (it may be used in some other region?). Too much legacy and too many features supported in the old system to be able to move away from it.
eproxus··on The hunt for a cluster-killer Erlang bug (2021)
I wish there was a "flag" feature for HN to flag articles as non-tech, and then a section that only showed tech articles. I miss the old tech-blog style front page with less politics (I wouldn't mind going to the new homepage every now and then, I just want tech focus to be the default).

They’re not as free form as you described, but the Frozen Synapse and Doorkickers series might tickle your fancy:

eproxus··on Bits of advice I wish I had known
If you label someone as inherently “not well behaved” you yourself are not going to be able make any progress with them, because you will not be able to see their potential or their experience.
eproxus··on “Can it run Doom” will never be the same, thanks to new ray-tracing mod
Speaking of, I think this glossy look would be perfect for a game like Dark Forces [1], rather than Doom. I feel most surfaces in Doom doesn’t really look like they would be so glossy.

But imagine a raytraced imperial starship hangar in Dark Forces instead.

eproxus··on Kaitai Struct: A new way to develop parsers for binary structures
You also have Erlang’s pattern matching at your disposal:

    decode(<<16#01, Size:8, Payload:Size/binary-unit:8, Rest/binary>>) ->
        [{field1, Payload}|decode(Rest)];
    decode(<<16#02, Flags:16, Rest/binary>>) when Flags =:= 1 ->
        [{field2, true}|decode(Rest)];
    decode(<<16#02, Flags:16, Rest/binary>>) ->
        [{field2, false}|decode(Rest)].
Anything after the when keyword is a guard condition allowing for some manner of positive/negative “look ahead” (Contrived example, but maybe you get the point).

eproxus··on Google Search Is Dying
It’s like a DDoS attack on your mind (distributed because everyone is doing it). The attention span economy at its finest.

Reminds me of those ways to catch spammers or bots by occupying some of their resources with meaningless tasks for as long as possible. Except it’s turned around.

Sometimes I wonder if there’s even any real money in ads anymore or if it’s just a giant circle jerk that slowly destroys society…
