eproxus··on America is now one big bet on AI
You’re absolutely correct!
eproxus··on About the security content of iOS 15.8.5 and iPadOS 15.8.5
Like a cease and desist letter, but inverted. Persist and insist, perhaps?
eproxus··on You can now disable all AI features in Zed
I don’t quite get what Zed’s emulation of :e has to do with being a modal editor. It’s a completely different editor so of course the interface to interact with files is going to be different, but in my experience Zed’s implementation of modality when it comes to its Vim mode is extremely good. Even better than the already excellent NeoVintageous for Sublime Text.
eproxus··on U.S. bombs Iranian nuclear sites
In properly safe countries this is of course not true. But sadly the world stage still seems to be on the development level of ”lawless neighborhood” so there’s some merit to the idea (not that it is necessarily the best way forward though).

eproxus··on jj: a Git-compatible VCS that is both simple and powerful
With JJ you can even override the ref spec of what should be considered a mutable commit. Feel free to set it to all commits and JJ will not allow you to mutate anything unless you pass the --ignore-mutable flag.

For example, I've configured it for me to make any commit by anyone else mutable regardless of branch:

    [revset-aliases]
    # To always consider changes by others immutable:
    "immutable_heads()" = "builtin_immutable_heads() | (trunk().. & ~mine())"
eproxus··on Goodbye, Slopify
I’m more curious of the claim that you don’t get podcasts pushed on you.

The last time I used Spotify (and the reason I left) podcast were constantly featured on the start page and it was impossible to remove them (and I have zero interest in podcast in my music application).

eproxus··on Trying out Zed after more than a decade of Vim/Neovim
I’ve fully migrated from Sublime Text to Zed, but in these areas both are lacking things the other has.

Sublime has great language support out of the box but poor LSP support (basically outsourcing it to a user plugin instead of having a native integration).

Zed has great LSP support but ”poor” language integration (also outsourcing the language plugins to the community, which makes the vary in quality and feature set).

But Zed has great AI integration which Sublime completely lacks, if you’re into that.

eproxus··on We Need to Talk About Docker Hub
But Docker said they would give away their services for free to all that meet the DSOS requirements. They did so in the past for this very organization and suddenly pulled the rug and went into radio silence.

The way I see it, Docker can’t both have their cake and eat it. They can’t both get the nice PR and goodwill of claiming to provide free access to open source, and also not do it (and require them to pay to keep using it in the existing capacity).

Fine if they don’t want to provide a free service, but then they shouldn’t be able to claim to do so either.

eproxus··on How much memory do you need in 2024 to run 1M concurrent tasks?
Note that the Task library in Elixir uses supervised processes so it adds a lot more overhead. It would be interesting to see the benchmark with just normal Erlang processes.
eproxus··on IMG_0416
Doesn't fit the requirement of "between two devices". Email involves a lot of other servers on the way (pure network devices like routers doesn't really count I guess) :-P
eproxus··on IMG_0416
I usually joke that the hardest problem in computer science that is not yet solved is sending a file between two devices.
eproxus··on Embeddings are underrated
I wonder if this can be used to detect code similarity between e.g. function or files etc.? Or are the existing algorithms overly trained on written prose?
eproxus··on Vimium – The Hacker's Browser
If you are on macOS and mainly use the link hints, Homerow (paid) gives you link hints for the entire OS (including browsers and web pages): https://www.homerow.app

It's one of my favorite macOS apps that I can't live without.

eproxus··on Amazon reveals first color Kindle, new Kindle Scribe, and more
The problem is, once you want to flip page you’ll try to press the touch screen and nothing will happen since you haven’t turned on the device with the power button (you don’t want the touch screen active always since it will drain the battery).

I guess they could add some indication on the screen it’s in ”sleep” mode though, like a frame or icon somewhere…

eproxus··on Diffusion for World Modeling

eproxus··on Sq.io: jq for databases and more
This tool can do that:

$ cat example.json | sq sql 'SELECT * FROM data'
    actor_id first_name last_name last_update
    1 PENELOPE GUINESS 2020-06-11T02:50:54Z
    2 NICK WAHLBERG 2020-06-11T02:50:54Z
One of the data source types is 'json' and the command 'sq sql ...' lets you execute SQL directly instead of using their default query language (SLQ).
eproxus··on CNN and USA Today have fake websites, I believe Forbes Marketplace runs them
Awesome tip. I made a Kagi lens with these settings:

(Can’t share example results since Kagi doesn’t let you share results from lenses)

eproxus··on To Nerves from Elixir
Not to downplay it or anything, but it is "just" the normal Erlang BEAM VM compiled together with the real time OS RTEMS (which basically implements all POSIX things that the VM needs). Of course, getting it to work needed a lot of research and and experimentation, but the end result is surprisingly simple for what it is. The maniac/genius part is coming up with the idea in the first place and actually pushing through until it works, not many people have the stamina and focus for that.

Source: I was part of the original core team, and I developed the first version of the Erlang support library and runtime.

eproxus··on There Is No Antimemetics Division (2018)

eproxus··on Schengen ain't what it used to be
It’s kind of a class problem, because they target the checks towards the cheapest means of traveling (i.e. most likely to carry illegal refugees). If you fly or take an expensive ferry there are practically never any checks.

Therefore people who can afford more expensive means of transportation don’t see the border checks as much.

eproxus··on Private Browsing 2.0
It's very odd that Safari treats extension scripts as third-party, especially when they have been given permission to access all websites and data (sound like a bug almost?).

I use and love StopTheMadness Pro. Do you know if it breaks the whole extension or only some parts of it? If so, which ones? (I don't use the copy URL shortcut for example).

eproxus··on PostgreSQL and UUID as Primary Key
There’s no need since they are random, so you might as well generate them on your application servers which are easier to scale, to offload the write database.
eproxus··on 3D Gaussian Splatting as Markov Chain Monte Carlo
It’s not exactly “average person” usage but Corridor Digital used in one of their video productions to create a looping, infinite corridor with proper reflections and lighting etc.: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GaGcLhhhbDs
eproxus··on Why Your Wi-Fi Router Doubles as an Apple AirTag
But most people don’t intentionally “broadcast their SSID in the open”. They just want to surf wirelessly in their homes with as little hassle as possible.

Until there’s technology that lets you do that easily I think this definitely violates privacy. Especially if unique information like MAC addresses is collect, and not only the Wi-Fi name.

I wonder how MAC addresses are treated under GDPR since e.g. IP addresses are considered personal information.

eproxus··on Nintendo blitzes GitHub with over 8k emulator-related DMCA takedowns
That is interesting. I wonder if there are any Switch games which have had their servers turned of and if an emulator can be argued to be made for the purpose of supporting that game only (that it then happens to play other games...)
eproxus··on The man who killed Google Search?
The bigger the behemoth, the slower the fall.
eproxus··on Atuin – Magical shell history
That issue is closed and fixed since almost a year. And as the author said, the 'list' command is supposed to list all invocations. When you search (Ctrl+R) you don't see duplicates (I guess the screencast might be old?).

It feels like you are just trying to find issues without having tried using it for real...

eproxus··on Atuin – Magical shell history
It does de-duplicate. It saves every command (even duplicates), but as soon as you search it only ever shows the last version you ran.

The reason it saves every command is so that it can produce statistics, for example exit code distribution and runs per day etc.

eproxus··on Show HN: htmz – a low power tool for HTML
Kind of makes me wish there was a htmx-lite of sorts. Like an 80/20 solution at 20% of the size, which could be extended to the full blown package with extensions.

Have you thought about moving more features to extension, like was done with the web sockets feature?
