ephimetheus··on ROOT: analyzing petabytes of data scientifically
We all have a love/hate relationship with it. It’s a bit like Stockholm syndrome.
ephimetheus··on TrueNAS will be moving to Docker Compose (away from K3s)
This makes me glad I decided against using TrueNAS as an application host, and instead use it in a VM only for zfs and shares.
ephimetheus··on Lisbon, a city dying from its own success
> Quality of food is dropping like a rock while prices go up, the average rent in my area is already 2.5x of what I'm currently paying, when both of us are under 20k/y, so mostly just waiting to be kicked out.

Not trying to disregard your experience here, but this phenomenon happens everywhere in Europe. In „Central European“ Germany most of the larger cities are becoming inaccessible to the lower to middle class population. Rents increasing, and cost of living rising drastically when it has historically been relatively low. I‘d wager tourism isn’t the driving factor in most cases there, but the trend is there.

ephimetheus··on Lisbon, a city dying from its own success
And people who live in tourist destinations also go on vacation to other tourist destinations

> “I can understand that we need to sell our country to capitalize it because we are poor, but it can be sold to attract luxury tourism and not low-cost tourism,”

This is unfortunately what it comes down to. Every tourist destination wants to be one for luxury tourists. I understand this on an emotional level, but it requires rolling back access to tourism and taking it away from the economically disfavored population.

Rich people will benefit because there are too many poor people for mass tourism.

C++ for people who hate C++
ephimetheus··on Fury Road's Practical FX Myth
As others in this thread have already pointed out: look at Top Gun Maverick, or the latest Mission Impossible.

In the former case, they filmed jets and jet cockpits, but all of the jets and cockpits are replaced by CG ones, only the actors remain if they are visible.

In the latter, in the motorcycle chase scene and when Tom jumps over the edge, aside from him and the bike, basically everything else is digital, e.g. digital train, terrain, trees, ground and everything.

They jumped the train off a bridge FOR REAL at the end of the chase, but then paint it over completely with a digital train. The only thing that stayed is some water splashes, that’s it.

This is intentionally concealed by the studio marketing saying it “was practical”. Yes they did do it “for real”, but it erases the work done on all of the digital effects that end up making up the majority of what you see in the movie.

That’s just dishonest, and what people are upset about.

ephimetheus··on Amber: Programming language compiled to Bash
I was hoping for a solid way to handle subprocesses, and especially how to handle failures. They have something in the docs, but it seems a bit underwhelming, in terms of how status codes and failures are handled. It’s probably better than straight bash, but I feel like there’s more to be done here.

Also: I don’t see mentioned how pipes affect the exit code propagation (i.e. pipefail).

ephimetheus··on Show HN: Adblock for Podcasts
This is already being done. Same as geo targeting dynamically inserted ads based on the IP of the downloading client.
ephimetheus··on iTerm2 and AI Hype Overload
I think you can hardly call it “focused on”, when it’s one feature out many many updates made to the software. Alao I believe you can retarget the calls to a local instance of a model behind an OpenAI compatible API, and it will happily use that.

Seems like lots of knee jerking going on.

ephimetheus··on What's New in Neovim 0.10
Yes that’s right!
ephimetheus··on What's New in Neovim 0.10
I know, but previously, the inlay hints would be displayed at the end of the line in Neovim, making them near useless.
ephimetheus··on What's New in Neovim 0.10
It does have it though. Been using it for at few years already with coc.
ephimetheus··on What's New in Neovim 0.10
Support for inlay LSP hints is the big one for me here. That’s mainly what’s kept me from switching over from vim so far.
ephimetheus··on Async Channels for Swift Concurrency
I really like the idea, I’m not sure I love the use of operators over named functions.

Could named functions be a optional alternative API?

ephimetheus··on Ask HN: Would you send a photo holding your drivers license to rent a VPS?
I think Hetzner is doing this as well now. I’m assuming they’re required to.
ephimetheus··on Hitting every branch on the way down
I think that’s just the ordering though. “” will also end up searching the system paths, it will just check the local paths first.
ephimetheus··on Firefox Proton UI userChrome.css fixes. (2021)
Proton is what made me come back to Firefox after many years.

It finally didn’t look cramped and complicated anymore.

ephimetheus··on Features lost across versions of macOS
On the internet, and especially on Hacker News, any change to anything is automatically bad. There was a lot of complaining about the new settings app, and in the betas it was genuinely buggy.

But then, if you don’t choose to get hung up on it, it’s fine. Layout and location of things might be a bit different than before, sure, but it’s fine.

ephimetheus··on Both pilots of an A320 fell asleep in the cockpit for 28 minutes
So we’re actually being told not to do this, even on night shifts, but I don’t think it’s actually being enforced. I did to some work on my PhD thesis while on shift, though.
ephimetheus··on CERN aims to build €20B collider
Not quite. We’re currently preparing for phase 2 of the LHC with increased beam intensities and therefore increased collected date.

From a computing point of view, this poses lots of fun challenges!

The current plan I believe is to run LHC and the experiments until the end of the 30s, to maximize return on investment in terms of “data per CHF”.

Aside from that, CERN has other experiments and projects, some are benefitting from LHC and the big experiments, some are connected to the chain of preaccellerators, and some are completely independent.

ephimetheus··on Python Packaging, One Year Later: A Look Back at 2023 in Python Packaging
> 4. Because Java has CLASSPATH (sort of like PYTHONPATH but probably better, and it probably inspired PYTHONPATH because I'm sure the Java CLASSPATH predates it)

Just pointing out that Python predates Java by a few years. Not sure when the PATH concept was introduced, though.

ephimetheus··on Python 3.13 Gets a JIT
I think usually the term “browser wars” refers to the time when Netscape and Microsoft were struggling for dominance, which concluded in 2001.

JavaScript JITs only emerged around 2008 with SpiderMonkey’s TraceMonkey, JavaScriptCore’s SquirrelFish Extreme, and V8’s original JIT.

ephimetheus··on The pro-Israel information war
I don’t really know, but I guess the argument is that historically Jewish minorities have not really been free from oppression in any country at any time until the end of the Second World War.

So maybe there’s no strict need for a Jewish state, but I can see how going back to a collective of (often oppressed) minorities is not appealing.

ephimetheus··on Apple announces that RCS support is coming to iPhone next year
Or if you frequently message people in other countries where they charge you who knows what
ephimetheus··on Apple announces that RCS support is coming to iPhone next year
Is RCS a thing in Europe? I don’t think I’ve ever seen this mentioned anywhere. Does the carrier sell you an RCS package? Does it apply to messages to other countries? If that’s the case, I don’t see how it could compete with any internet message service that exists today in any capacity.
ephimetheus··on Paperless-ngx – Open source document management system
I made that! Glad you like it!
ephimetheus··on Paperless-ngx – Open source document management system
Shameless plug: I recently released a native app for iOS that connects to Paperless-ngx:

ephimetheus··on Spack – scientific software package manager for supercomputers, Linux, and macOS
I’ve tried to like this more than once, but once you hit some cryptic error somewhere in the build you’re not going to have a great time.

Also unfortunately it doesn’t always play nicely with lots of high energy physics software which really leans on using LD_LIBRARY_PATH and running custom executables during builds. I’ve had bad experiences with ROOT and Gaudi with no obvious paths forward for fixing things.
