epcoa··on 56k.rip – the 1996 dial-up internet experience
You’re right, it just sucks. I don’t care how much AI anyone uses. It’s not that it’s “AI” slop, it’s slop. In this day and age we are almost certain AI was involved, but it has little to do with the criticism. It’s just a few short years ago we assume this kind of crap wouldn’t make it to the front page on the regular.

And the criticism isn’t even that it is off… things that are off can have artistic or entertainment value. This doesn’t. It’s just screams laziness.

Bunch of AI slop.
epcoa··on Video CDs Break Windows Explorer
VCD was the home video format of the masses throughout much of Asia in the late 90s and early 2000s.

Nobody called you out. You really can believe whatever you want. The delusions of grandeur comment was clearly not addressed at you personally (“site with delusions of grandeur”). Touch grass, seriously.
epcoa··on Why is the liver so weirdly regenerative?
MODY is something else entirely (a genetic mutation driven disease with distinct pathophysiology from Type 1). What’s being discussed here is LADA (late autoimmune diabetes in adults). LADA itself isn’t that rare but it is a small minority of all cases of diabetes in older adults.
epcoa··on Why is the liver so weirdly regenerative?
"Some day, your immune system may decide to attack your pancreas."

Immune attack of the pancreas is usually a disease of youth. Type 2 diabetes which is overwhelmingly the diabetes associated with aging is not an autoimmune disease.

Yale Appliance, Harper and Knowles. But I'm not sure why you think a snitty "but LG? Ain't nobody got time for that." deserves a more rigorous reply on an informal commentary site with delusions of grandeur. Like I said to the other dude, believe whatever you'd like. But if you're out in the sticks and you can't do your own service you probably shouldn't buy either.

They have the functionality that if the local weather is predicted to be bad they will preemptively lower the temperature? Really, which ones?

That you can remotely control something isn’t “smart”

epcoa··on Samsung accidentally freezes its smart fridges with a software update
> so maybe I lower the temperature setting to try and extend the life of the contents.

Bullshit. The ideal refrigerator temperature is already close enough to freezing that any small adjustment you could make is unlikely to do any good. If this was actually a good idea then by your logic (similar to odd love for printer manufacturers) the all wise manufacturers would have already incorporated this into their “smart” fridges.

epcoa··on Samsung accidentally freezes its smart fridges with a software update
This is the dumbest shit I’ve ever heard. A standard mono laser printer can somehow print adequately without ANY color toner.
epcoa··on Samsung accidentally freezes its smart fridges with a software update
It’s pretty well known in the US that LG washers perform better and have a far better parts and service network than Samsung. You think whatever you want though.
epcoa··on Working with Git Worktrees in Magit
No this is completely incorrect. The filesystem doesn’t break a link just if you open it. Your editor or higher level utility is free to do so (by unlinking and copying the data into a new file/inode), but this is not how the filesystem works.
epcoa··on Audacity 4.0
Trying to shoe horn multiplatform UI into MFC? Just look at Unicode. It’s an unholy mess.

The only toolkit to do what it does? Qt does what it does, even if the approach is not the same (arguably superior), there’s also Tk. There’s also libui and IUP.

epcoa··on Audacity 4.0
> wxWidgets uses the native OS interfaces.

Audacity was fooling no one that it was a native MacOS app, or even a particularly well designed GTK app. The fundamental idea of WX is not sound. Turns out MFC is not a great abstraction for AppKit.

Even Qt uses some higher level native UI interfaces on its respective implementations.

epcoa··on Pac-Man, but you're the ghost
Are you talking about for the AI Pac-Man or the ghosts? Because the ghosts in real Pac-Man don’t have cornering.
epcoa··on Moving beyond fork() + exec()
NtCreateProcess was not a public Windows API. NT was flexible, that’s not what was being discussed, which should have been clear from the context.
epcoa··on Moving beyond fork() + exec()
This is not true. NT never had fork, was always based on the assumption of an MMU and Dave Cutler was a well known fork hater in the 80s long before this paper came out and made it cool to be so. By the time Windows 95 was out, the baseline was 386 with an MMU. CreateThread was initially designed for NT in 1993 though (which didn’t support pre-386 CPUs).
epcoa··on Moving beyond fork() + exec()
> It's weird to leave out a mention of copy-on-write

For the intended audience of such a paper this is base knowledge.

You can go straight to hell for making me feel old.

epcoa··on I was recently diagnosed with anti-NMDA receptor encephalitis
Absolutely not to defend what happened but that GAD diagnosis sets in motion the anchoring, because now you have an “established” (and recent) psychiatric diagnosis and it’s all too common that an ED is going to heavily prioritize this as a progression. EDs are just very bad in general about reconsidering a differential for a (new) chronic condition unless it’s flashing like a neon sign, especially when there is an easy enough dispo to reach for, transfer to psych in this case. But even worse, you already had an extensive outpatient workup to hang their hat on. From the history provided the history of a fall is the only thing mentioned that sounded like a slam dunk brewing neurological deficit, and it is not very specific, half the ED are people that fell. I’m sure you’ve read the MDM portion of the ED note, it may or may not give some idea of why neurological conditions were dismissed. Very unfortunate.

epcoa··on Local privilege escalation via execve()
There was no snark. If you have something of importance running and the inevitable discovery of an LPE is something you don’t have defense for or can quickly mitigate you’re doing a bad job as a sysadmin. For all general purpose OS in common use today that usually means patch and reboot should be an NBD workaround.
epcoa··on Bambu Lab is abusing the open source social contract
You literally said: “They sell something in their videos and do things in videos that are different from their true self. ”

“Inauthentic” was I still think a close enough reference paraphrase of your statement. Not a value judgement. You even used the word "authentic" in your thesis. And in general I wouldn’t necessarily disagree but I don’t see how it is necessarily related to their choice of personal devices. An internet celeb probably doesn’t use GrapheneOS because the limitations sucks for most people, not because of some calculated subscriber count play.

If you use an unrooted Pixel, why are we even having this conversation, and if not.. well maybe the dude just wants to use a secure wallet.

Regardless of this influencer's "real life" persona I see nothing incongruent about even their "influencer" persona using an iPhone. Therefore I see no relevance to anything in your original comment.

epcoa··on Bambu Lab is abusing the open source social contract
So, this wasn’t a dick sizing contest about who contributes to open source. The point is there is a certain extent I will go to maintain my ideals of using certain systems and it is more than average even for here (the peanut gallery), and on par with the influencer in question, ie I can relate regardless of their “inauthentic” persona. Most people, even those that consider themselves “enthusiasts”, simply won’t go to the effort of reverse engineering or writing drivers - if it were the case there would be a much larger ecosystem of high quality drivers and a larger pool of contributors. I am in that minority and still use an iPhone, and I don’t have a subscriber count.

2. A google pixel isn’t meaningfully more open than an iPhone (I depend on functionality that would be unavailable if rooted). This wasn’t meant to be an iPhone vs android debate. For the purposes of this discussion they are equivalent.

epcoa··on Bambu Lab is abusing the open source social contract
I use Linux as a daily driver, write and modify kernel (mainline and out of tree) and userspace drivers, have reverse engineered various things. ie beyond most of the HN peanut gallery. That said I use an iPhone because I have a day job and nothing “open” is worth dealing with.
epcoa··on Local privilege escalation via execve()
Anyone relying on a 30+ year old monolith kernel written in C to not have some exploitable LPEs lurking should stay in basket weaving and out of sysadmin.
epcoa··on Credit cards are vulnerable to brute force attacks
So maybe I’m wrong but the belief is that debit card protections are worse than a credit card in the US. I really don’t have the personal time to test this, but I do know that when I dispute on a credit card it is initially removed until proven valid.

Again maybe I’m wrong but I don’t agree they are equivalent. It sure fucking feels that way, the money isn’t threatened from my account.

epcoa··on Credit cards are vulnerable to brute force kind attacks
In addition to nominal fraud prevention (and how is any debit card better) there’s nothing better to claw back transaction fees, so what the fuck am I supposed to do?
epcoa··on Credit cards are vulnerable to brute force attacks
Well good for you. Us poors in the US like them for what they’re worth.
