envolt··on Facebook reveals its cryptocurrency Libra
Basic Question - What is the problem that they are trying to solve?
envolt··on WeChat is Watching: Living in China with the app that knows everything about me
Ask someone from China for an Invitation to WeChat, it shouldn't be the case (Not sure if they have made it mandatory in last few months)

> Also, everyone in China still accepts cash but you generally need correct change.

They do. But fake currency is very common in China. I was advised not to use cash. But since I'm not from China, I wasn't able to setup wechat pay account which is very common .

Most of the restaurants I had been to had currency checker machines.

envolt··on Twitter is rejecting posts containing JSFiddle URLs
So is Net Neutrality. Ensures that random sites (new sites) doesn't distract you.
envolt··on Inventors killed by their own inventions
This is also interesting - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_unusual_deaths
envolt··on A $999 monitor stand is everything wrong with Apple today
I had the same thought.
envolt··on Firefox 67
This was fucking absurd update. My firefox profile was not compatible, and all my extensions were removed (And resynced). I was using Containers to manage all my work/personal/work2 sessions, and they are all gone (Again; first happened when firefox addon outage happened)
envolt··on “Users want control” is a shoulder shrug
> People want good health care. If they don’t trust systems to provide them good health care, if they don’t trust their providers to understand their priorities, then choice is the fallback.

Applies to any settings page with too many options.

envolt··on All extensions disabled due to expiration of intermediate signing cert
Update - Container data is lost post addons recovery (I installed Nightly build). This is ridiculous.

My Firefox usage will be so unproductive for few days. I had around 6-8 containers for different purpose, and somehow I'm habitual to using shortcut to launch a container and open whatever I'm supposed to (e.g I've access to 3 different AWS account, and I tend to press shortcut key to launch the relevant container tab)

envolt··on All extensions disabled due to expiration of intermediate signing cert
The Container extension is no longer working. I'm logged out of mostly everything. There are few sites I don't want to open without container.
envolt··on Microsoft PM Explains Why Chromium Edge Can’t Run Google Earth (PNaCl)
Is it not similar to how YouTube killed IE6 and Chrome is killing Mozilla Firefox?
envolt··on Ask HN: AWS SQS down in us-east-2?
A separate questions. Are their any common practices for recovering the system from message bus failures (such as SQS in your case).

Seeing your post made me realize if SQS goes down, a lot of random things will be happening in my application.

envolt··on Promise.allSettled – non-short-circuit version of Promise.all
This is my favorite interview question.

If you have to make N (not fixed) requests, and only want the result of successful ones discarding failures, how will you do it with native Promises only?

envolt··on Ask HN: Is there a Hacker News endpoint for the “Tell HN” posts?
You can build a simple webpage for yourself using the APIs

Here is the start point -

https://hacker-news.firebaseio.com/v0/showstories.json?print...

More - https://github.com/HackerNews/API

This could be a plain html page, which you can bookmark and check daily.

envolt··on A basic little music player I made using vuejs
Wait!

It is this easy to run a web-based app? No heavy Electron dependency?

envolt··on Security flaw in French government messaging app exposed confidential info
Is it the same everywhere?
envolt··on Ask HN: Have you ever over-engineered something? Why?
I also feel that spending a lot of time reading Uber/Netflix blogs (or similar stuff) is not what I should do, for an hour, first thing in the morning.
envolt··on Ask HN: Have you ever over-engineered something? Why?
Yes, a lot. I feel that I'm doing it more often now. I'm 5-year exp. now, and the unexpected expectation of ensuring that it should be self-sustainable in the future is making me spend more time in even small thing, which is definitely over-engineering.

Often meeting goes like,

Person 1 - this should do it

P2 - But if we do that, that will also cover that2 in future

P1, P3 - Make sense, let's do it.

P4 - We should also do that3.

All - Lets put up our points on a Doc, and discuss it again tomorrow. We shouldn't build something which we have to revisit in the future, it will be a waste of time otherwise.

All agree, adjourned.

(P1 to Pn are interchangeable)

envolt··on Google Chrome 75 will disable websites from detecting Incognito mode
I would be able to stream DRM content (e.g Netflix)?
envolt··on Apple apologizes for failing MacBook keyboards yet again
MacBook is supposed to be a no-trouble-device. You just buy once, sit back and enjoy for rest of the life.

Removing USB ports certainly didn't help. What's the point of a good battery life. If I've to carry connectors everywhere, I'm okay with carrying charger as well.

envolt··on How to live without Google (2017)
I've done the same, few months back. And yes, sometimes (well most of the time) results are not satisfactory if I'm looking for a specific thing (e.g Expecting a relevant result from StackOverFlow).

I'm using Firefox Containers, I hop on to Google Search with a temporary extension

envolt··on How to live without Google (2017)
For Maps -

Well, I don't trust Apple either.

Waze was good, but now Google has it.
