It appears to me that this article, at least the title, is wrong. The update simply adds a local only api that apps can ise, it doesn't do any scanning. And Google sent out a notification that they plan to use this API in an update to Google Chat. Notably, it will not (at least for now) communicate the scan results back to Google.

Longer term, I think our best hope is the Servo project, and I would encourage anyone who is able to support Servo development.

One open source founder who had complete control over the projects foundation appears to have used access to foundation resources against a commercial competitor- the case is currently in court, but the drama has already had a substantial negative impact on that community.

Some years ago, another open source founder who had great influence over the projects nonprofit removed a long time contributor from the project over commercial perception concerns, not due to a violation of the projects code of conduct- then repeatedly lied about the reason to the community (editing their own posts multiple times to try to cover it up), causing substantial harm to the project and community.

People aren't perfect, they will make mistakes, even without commercial interests. But the foundation, seeking to support all interests equally, can build confidence and security by spreading authority across interests (the Matrix Governing Board is a great step in that direction, but legally it seems like its role is advisory and subordinate to the Guardians, as it is not part of the governing documents of the organization).

Thank you for sharing that information. It seems like the foundation has been slowly moving in the right direction. I may have written a bit too harshly in my previous comment. I have been checking in on the development of Matrix, the Foundation, and monitoring that Github issue for quite some time.

Questions:

What is the narrow set of programs Matrix.org maintains? Is Trust and Safety referring to moderating the Matrix.org homeserver?

Are there strategies that could offload some of the homeserver hosting/moderation burden to community home server operators?

Are there strategies that could make the Matrix Conf closer to break even or perhaps even revenue positive?

Most importantly, how is the foundation protected and independent of its commercial sponsors? Currently 1/2 of the foundation's "Guardians", its top governance board, are from a single commercial entity. (I am profoundly grateful to Element for their past and continued support of Matrix and its operations, but as we have witnessed in other open source communities, having a single commercial interest having too much control can be disastrous over the long term).

I really, really hope Matrix succeeds in the long term. I am absolutely rooting for it.

I love the concept behind the Matrix protocol, but I have zero faith in the Matrix Foundations ability to execute. Folks have been asking for financial tranparency for years now (https://github.com/matrix-org/matrix-spec/issues/571#issueco...). And all that we get are posts like this complainging about not having enough money and threatening to shut things down, repeatedly.

Maybe if they were more open and transparent, folks could help get them on the right track, either by making recomendations to improve, volunteering to help with things, or contributeing financially.

Okay, I can see your point. I thought this was under the question "Why would anyone living in a democracy be against this?" but I see now it was a response to the other question that was response to that question.

It seems like that phrase "democracy" means different things to different people, depending on where they are from.

Almost all of the countries we label as "democracies" have constitutions, and many of those constitutions limit what can be "democratically voted for". In the United States, the constitution has strict limits on ceaseing private property. That does not mean the US is not "democratic" by common usage of the term. Those living in democracies that thus protect private property rights may find laws that encroach on those private property rights odd, and be against them. Even in a country that has no such protections, one may be against such laws.

You would think that a real police officer would have reviewed all of the video themselves and checked the work of the facial recognition system. The software is just there to help narrow down what the officer needs to manually review. Like doing a web search and manually checking the top results to see if they are what you want.

Do you have a citation for this? I am reasonably familiar with Mormonism (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) and I don't think I have ever heard this before?

Because the Wordpress organization is a nonprofit, the organizations assets can't be used to the exclusive benefit of a for profit- Automatic. And therein lies the issue- Mullenweg attempted to weaponize the nonprofits assets against WP Engine in favor of his own for profit. Whether or not those actions were legal is being decided in court, but it doesn't look good for Mullenweg. And it certainly wasn't in the best interests of the wider Wordpress ecosystem, which is what Wordpress.org the nonprofit was setup to serve.

I concur, it is a pain. The US absolutely needs to improve! The point I was making is that the idea of free, unrestrained, unlimited healthcare in Europe is a myth.

You do realize that Euroean countris also decide what drugs and procedures they will cover on their national health plans too? Because you have a more limited set of options, your doctors will know what is covered and only recomend tose options, but it doesn't mean there aren't things that aren't covered.

Nobody is demanding anything. They simply stated what they value as a consumer, and if GOG wants more of their business, what they need to do to earn it. This is valuable feedback to any company.

Zulip is another one, mentioned in a sibling comment. Matrix/Element is used by some companies. Nextcloud Chat exists, but I don't know much about it.

That sounds like a TaskRabbit vulnerability (in your example), not a Google vuln? It is also a vulnerability in any email based sign in, which relies on email alone without a password to demonstrate account ownership. (Including password resets that rely on email).

A pedestrian scramble means that no vehicles should be moving through the intersection period. It is a time in the cycle where ALL vehicles stop, and pedestrians can use the intersection freely in any direction, including diagonally.

I would prefer a more permissive license, such as MIT or Apache. Zulip is similar software, produced by a commercial company, and it is MIT licensed. The primary reason for this is that it isn't always clear with copyleft licenses where the boundary is between being a new separate work that uses the GPL software API, or when it is a derivative work of the GPL software. Also, as they are shutting down, there isn't really any reason for them to worry about some one else using the code in a permissive way.

(That being said, a copyleft license is miles ahead of the CC NC license for software!)

We have two major parties, and several smaller ones- the Libertarian Party and the Green Party are the two largest third parties generally. However, there are also sub factions within the major political parties, so that they in fact makeup a sort of coalition of sub factions, similar to the coalitions of parties you see in other countries. This means that primaries are a super important part of the election cycle in the USA. The Primaries are like the first round of a two round system.
