ensignavenger··on OpenAI slams court order to save all ChatGPT logs, including deleted chats
Doesn't GDPR have an explicit exemption for legal compliance?
ensignavenger··on Japan Post launches 'digital address' system
Its just a number assigned to every American person usually at birth nowadays. It is assigned the the Social Security Administration. It was designed as a Social Security account number, but is also used as a Tax Identification Number by the IRS. And a lot of places treat it like it is some super secret password, but it is just a number, and it is a number that everyone wants, and everyone and their dog- including multiple government agencies- has made publicly available, so now everyone and their dog and their dogs cousins dog has access to them, so it makes absolutely no sense why anyone would treat them as secret.
ensignavenger··on Japan Post launches 'digital address' system
Is there a public-privete keypair associated with the MyNumber ID?
ensignavenger··on Google shared my phone number
I'm not familair with German laws, but are you saying that there is some law that prevents individuals from sueing Google and liederando? That seems insane, in the US, you could absolutely sue both of these businesses.
ensignavenger··on You’re a little company, now act like one (2009)
You know, I re-read my comment before submitting it, and one thing I thout was- I'm not using enough hyphens in this comment! But alas I submitted it anyway.
ensignavenger··on You’re a little company, now act like one (2009)
Personally, I like hyphens, a lot. I don't understand the trend of removing them. But whatever.
ensignavenger··on DDoSecrets publishes 410 GB of heap dumps, hacked from TeleMessage
According to the article: "TeleMessage has been used by the federal government since at least February 2023"

I don't know if that use was authorized or not.

ensignavenger··on The cryptography behind passkeys
It is my understanding that there is ongoing work to create an import/export standard, and that bitwarden is planning to support it. But also, you can give your heirs your bitwarden root password.
ensignavenger··on Uber to introduce fixed-route shuttles in major US cities
Unless the Uber driver gets to determine the route, stops, and schedule, and preferably price. Then they are, in my opioniin, more than enough of a freelancer. But I have no odea how this product works in actuality.
ensignavenger··on Ty: A fast Python type checker and language server
But are you going to actually make money from it? I am quite leery of companies releasing awesome open source code, growing and taking on massive financing (based largely on that growth, which they achieved because of being open source) then after becoming entrenched in the market, bitching and whining about not "capturing enough value" from their open source code. (And often, switching to an non open source license, while simultaneously declaring their love for open source!)

Now, I know you folks haven't ever done that, but it is such a pattern lately that I almost expect it from any for profit company whose primary product is open source. I don't want to judge you based on the actions of others... but the pattern is so well established now that I have to exercise caution.

Now, in the end, I simply switch to whatever open source fork or alternative crops up (or already exists). But it makes it hard for me to go "Hey everyone, you should be using Astral's X because they are awesome and X is awesome and X is open source. And do 'y'[code contributions, financial sponsorship, buy support from them- whatever it might be] to make sure to support Astral and their development of the open source X code!" ... because I am anticipating the rug pull, taking the trademark and brand down the tube with it. Yet, I really, really, really want to support you folks. I want to tell everyone about your great products. I want to encourage them to use your product and to support you financially.

ensignavenger··on I decided to pay off a school’s lunch debt
Applying for school lunches is pretty simple compared to most any other programs. The schools in general really want as many as possible on free lunches, not only does it give students free lunch, but it is used to calculate all sorts of grants.

Applying for medicaid and SNAP is quite a bit more difficult, especially for a homeless person. But school lunches is really as simple as it could be, excepting just making it free for everyone.

ensignavenger··on Open WebUI changed license from BSD-3 to Open WebUI license with CLA
I am skeptical that this change meets the Open Source definition. I can understand that they want to experiment with something new, but the OSD includes a non discrimination clause, you cannot restrict or grant different rights in an open source license to different groups. What they should do instead is dual license, with a license that a acheives their goals for the general populace, plus special licenses for specifc groups that allow them to do things the open source license doesnt. I'm not a fan of CLAs like that, but they are requiring a CLA anyway.
ensignavenger··on Redis is open source again
This is my number one objection to the AGPL. Still way better than the SSPL or BUSL, but I will stick with valley for now.
ensignavenger··on Apple violated antitrust ruling, judge finds
But game developers can sell steam keys directly or cia other resellers and avoid the steam commision entirely. So Valve is goving them a fee service and only chargeing a commision when valve themselves generate the sell.
ensignavenger··on Virginia passes law to enforce maximum vehicle speeds for repeat speeders
Most US states have similar point systems.
ensignavenger··on OpenAI wants to buy Chrome and make it an "AI-first" experience
Up to 'the' judge', plus the many other appellate judges, unless DoJ and Google come to an agreement and Google decides not to appeal. Google can both appeal the original verdict and any remedies.
ensignavenger··on Show HN: JuryNow – Get an anonymous instant verdict from 12 real people
Even one of the poster's sample question, the one about the brothers third wedding, is one I would not want to answer with a simple yes/no.
ensignavenger··on Why the Ultrarich Are Unplugging from "Smart Homes"
I'm a big fan of cat(whatever number they are on now...) and PoE for low power devices. I wish more devices supported it.
ensignavenger··on Why the Ultrarich Are Unplugging from "Smart Homes"
What do you use the cat5 cables for? You mention it is all "dumb" (edit, actually the word used was 'conventional') but you also mention electronics, so it must not be that dumb?

As for the bathroom, another option would be a small on demand water heater under the bathroom sink.

ensignavenger··on Snapchat is harming children at an industrial scale?
So after doing this for 2 years, what were the negative effects other than a few seconds spent each day?
ensignavenger··on Meta antitrust trial kicks off in federal court
There are far, far, far more than just 7 photo sharing apps/websites within the same number of clicks as Facebook and Instagram.
ensignavenger··on Fake job seekers are flooding US companies that are hiring for remote positions
If you agree to work for someone a number of hours per week, and you don't do it, while having no intention of doing it, and they are paying you while you are lying about it, that is fraud in most jurisdictions.
ensignavenger··on Show HN: A Chrome extension to give you back control over short-form videos
Thanks for releasing it! Whats the chance of this getting shipped to Firefox users? A future improvement might be to add the ability to change the playback speed :)
ensignavenger··on California bill aims to phase out harmful ultra-processed foods in schools
Oh I see, my bad, I thought this was passed legislation. I guess I should have paid more attention to the details.
ensignavenger··on California bill aims to phase out harmful ultra-processed foods in schools
The CA legislature actually passed a law stating it was their intent to pass a law?
ensignavenger··on I won't connect my dishwasher to your cloud
I'll grant you that, but many other manufacturers are doing that too. I avoid buying those models. If it says "wifi", I avoid it like the plague.
ensignavenger··on I won't connect my dishwasher to your cloud
Sounds not so much like a Bosch problem as a retailer problem. It was the retailer that lied to you about the machine.
ensignavenger··on Show HN: FastOpenAPI – automated docs for many Python frameworks
Django Ninja provides this already for Django, and it is great.
ensignavenger··on A 19yo woman graduated from high school with honors even though she can't read
Also it wasn't clear for how many years she had actually been in Hartford. I am not as familair with dyslexia treatment, in severe cases, what tools do school districts have to teach children to read and write?
