They are dysfunctional & your complaint would go down a blackhole. Never to be seen or heard again.

I sympathize with you and hope the story reaches more ears. I can believe how unprofessional hotel staff can be despite their own mistakes. That's especially true for hotels that are run as a family business and lack corporate culture & ethics. They'll throw around the word 'sorry' freely but they rarely mean it. I'd suggest you to take the legal route, or atleast get plenty of press coverage on this. Let's also hear out what they have to say.

Well done. A little 'getting started' would help people get started faster. This written at the top "Select the plates" & the progress bar weren't obvious because there were occluded form the view.

I think all laptops can extend the battery life-span significantly with just smarter software. I manually cycle my laptop battery regularly & do not keep it charged at 100% all the time even if the laptop is plugged in (some Thinkpad models allow that). Even after 2 years of daily use, I've got greater than 80-90% battery capacity left.

Looks cool, Hopefully more people pick it up. Does it have much traction with any particular demographics?
enscr··on Turkey has blocked Google DNS access to Twitter
Time is ripe for a P2P real-time people-network. Outside first world, Twitter has been playing a pivotal role in helping people counter oppressive regimes & lack of democracy. But this may not continue for long.

Edit: Ripe = not just for making it but adopting it as well.

The cost of rescue & recovery is substantial. That money could be preemptively used to subsidize the tech that affects flight safety.

"Genius is one percent inspiration, ninety-nine percent perspiration"

The list takes care of 1% part. Perspiration is fueled by passion. As long as one can strike the right mix, why not.

It is probably a good thought but the implementation sounds too strict. The power users have ruined stackoverflow to an extent. I'd suggest relaxing the endorsement policy to a lower karma score. And perhaps a way of penalizing those who aren't doing a good job of letting positive comments in. So if you want power, it comes at a cost.

Lastly, you should also consider the intelligent but quiet guys in the classroom. Those who are uber conscious about speaking up despite having good suggestions. The fear of not being able to speak, if they don't say anything good enough will silence them.

enscr··on Twitter is blocked in Turkey
Twitter has been playing a pivotal role in connecting people and getting the word out via an unbiased medium. The effect of twitter has been phenomenal over the past few years in countries that have undergone political revolution. Much of the reality that the citizens need to know are blacked out by mainstream media because it's controlled by the government & corporations who are hand in glove.

Unfortunately, many countries have resorted to a simple fix of policing twitter. Second unfortunate thing is that twitter is still restricted to the tech savvy crowd. There's still a sizable population outside third world that don't know what it is & how to use it. But as long as we have un-policed social media tools, we might see large scale cleaning in the coming decades.

Feels really good to see innovations at school level, even if it's mostly inspiration. The practical application of what we study has been lacing in Indian education system.

You do realize that losing a wallet is not the same as losing an email. A backup copy of the former is useless if it's stolen however that's not always the case with latter.

Awesome things like what MtGox did?

enscr··on What if you didn't need money or attention?
You are missing the peer pressure part. Even if you don't need money & don't need attention, people won't let you live being content. The greed for money+attention, in my view, are the biggest vices. Unfortunately, they also drive growth & innovation.

Agree with : This is perhaps an unpopular opinion, but to pull out now is, undeniably, to leave with the job only half-done

It amazes me to think about how can people be so radically different, based on their upbringing. Sometimes I give up thinking and accept the fact that what seems correct & logical to you may be absolute nonsense in another part of the world. Being born in the right place is a BIG privilege. It's something you can't simply appreciate by not being there physically.

enscr··on Firefox 28 Release Notes
Chrome feels lighter & perceptually faster (mostly psychological) because of a flatter UI (specifically the tabs, scrollbars). Although after updating Firefox today, I can notice that there's improvement in it.
enscr··on Firefox 28 Release Notes
Eagerly waiting to ditch Chrome & its forced notifications. Perhaps with Australis (Firefox 29), the UI would be at par.

Edit : Chrome feels subtle, lighter & perceptually faster (specifically : tabs, scrollbars). Although after updating Firefox today, I can notice that there's improvement in Firefox.

The chrome notification icon pushed me over the edge to switch back to Firefox. Even though the UI feels less polished & slightly less responsive, I'm happy to support Firefox. Hoping that more people switch to Firefox and they can get more resources to be omnipresent.
enscr··on Bill Gates: Microsoft would have bought WhatsApp too, but not for $19B
To write it off 3 years later?

Skype used to work well until ebay interrupted it. Now with MS, the bloated UI takes forever to load and I can't login for 3-4 minutes. If whatsapp can start in a snap on a mobile device and use so little background resource, why can't skype achieve that. The users will come automatically if you have a compelling product.

enscr··on Save more with Google Drive
Good points.

3. No block level sync. This is a big deal for me since I use big encrypted files (block cipher). They work flawlessly with Dropbox. Incremental changes = incremental update.

enscr··on Save more with Google Drive
2 counter arguments:

1. Dropbox has a high potential to be acquired by a big company when the price is right.

2. Cloud storage service is something that you don't need to be attached to. Use Google till it's good. The day it isn't, simply switch to Dropbox or whatever.

I'm glad I could help. I've felt so helpless with back pain in the past that I love to share this book with anyone who's had similar problems. It's hard to imagine that the problem is so trivial, for which we seek really expensive solutions through herman millers & the likes.

For sitting : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n9CDhcVTAdc

Similarly there are methods for standing, lying etc.

enscr··on Show HN: My Desk Chair
As someone who's struggled with back + shoulder pain and having gone through a few expensive chairs, now I feel that a correct posture is more important than chair. I have a cheap cookie cutter chair + a thin pillow and I can work much better. Not advertising anything, just go to Amazon and search "back pain" in books. Probably the first entry is the one. It teaches you how to correct your posture naturally. Or just watch a video from the book author on youtube. I think that technique alone will fix a lot of the problems.
enscr··on Google and Password Security
Recently I lost access to an old google account that I hadn't used in a long time. Google asked me a couple of questions like when was the account created, I purposely entered the month incorrectly. This was followed by some other vague questions like which other google services do I use etc. Finally I was surprised at how easily I was able to reset my password. An evil mind can easily compromise tonnes of accounts because there are ways to guess a lot of the data Google asks. I'll skip the details here.

Bottomline, Google & its users need to step up account security, atleast for their primary account that's tied to banking etc. 2FA is definitely a temporal piece of mind until someone finds a loophole.

enscr··on Nouriel Roubini: Bitcoin Is a ‘Ponzi Game’
He isn't the first & definitely not the last to say that. Some things are best left for time to decide. When it comes to generation defining concepts, many of the "expert" comments are as accurate as a coin toss. Pick up any major economic event in history & look at what percentage got it right. What does that say?
