enricobruschini··on Ask HN: Best monitoring system?
Hi all, I'm surely biased as I work at Instana (https://www.instana.com), but here's my opinion about monitoring.

Applications are dramatically and rapidly changing, with continuous delivery, microservice approach, containers and orchestration tools, things are all over and you might have a component spun up and down within few minutes. Humans cannot keep up with data and it doesn't make any sense to stare at a big screen full of data, just looking the all day at charts trying to visually correlate data. The correlation of data is becoming harder and harder as systems are more and more resilient. There's, therefore, no unique root cause anymore (https://www.instana.com/blog/no-root-cause-microservice-appl...).

At Instana we're re-defining what monitoring means. We're moving the bar from visualizing data to providing plain English explanation of what's going together with suggestion for remediation. Instana 3 main values are: - Automatic Discovery: dynamically models the architecture of infrastructure, middleware and services - Automatic QoS Analysis: continuously derives KPIs of all components and services and alerts on incidents - Integrated Investigation: visualizes in real-time physical and logical architecture, compares over time, suggests fixes and optimizations.

Happy to get feedback and provide more info. Enrico

Thanks weej for submitting. I'm on the Instana team, happy to answer questions :)
enricobruschini··on Bootcamps vs. College
Thel real big difference that too often Americans forget is that college (and all the education system below colleges) gives you the structural mindset to break down complex problems and find solutions. They create your way of thinking and your rational side. Bootcamps, instead, just teach you how to execute some actions. It's like the difference between colleges and industrial schools.
enricobruschini··on How Uber conquered London
In Jan London people were 'extremely unfamiliar' with Uber pool and the 'friendliness' of Londoners is far from the real one of San Franciscan. I personally ran into situation where a rider joining a pool was so not ready that she commented 'there's a man in the car' and her boy replied with 'kick him out'. I truly hope the biggest achievement of Uber could be to change Londoners' mindset.
enricobruschini··on Technical advances that could make wind power viable everywhere
Yes, this is one of the possible approach to the wind assessment challenge. Unfortunately it is not accurate below 250ft, the wind is not linear and this kind of model doesn't count well enough all the obstacles at the low altitudes. Therefore this model doesn't work for the <100KW turbines and when it comes to >100KW, the investment is so big that you still want an on-site-specific wind assessment. In conclusion this service is useful only for curiosity or for preliminary observations
enricobruschini··on Technical advances that could make wind power viable everywhere
There are many more step forward the wind energy industry can still see. Not only incremental ones. Before moving to SF I was at Energie Etiche, an Italian startup that is bringing to the market an innovative wind assessment software. By cutting the preliminary wind assessment time from 18 to 3 months and the relative costs from $15k to $2k-$4k it's possible to open up the whole "Small Wind Market" (aka <100KW)
enricobruschini··on Google Prediction API: A Machine Learning Black Box for Developers
The "blackbox" approach for machine learning is the same concept Simon Chan used to build Prediction.io The bet there is "would developers be fine with using a blackbox?". Or would they prefer to have full control on the algo inside the box? Nice reading tho.
enricobruschini··on Massimo Banzi: Fighting for Arduino
He's correct, that doesn't make us proud tho
enricobruschini··on Massimo Banzi: Fighting for Arduino
Had the chance to meet Massimo quickly long time ago; a truly passionate innovator and honest at hearth. I'm so sorry to read this story and I feel as much proud of what he did as much disappointed and disgusted for the "dark side" of the story. #keepPushing Massimo!
enricobruschini··on How Long Should It Take to Build an MVP?
Yes, it should take too long, but also there is sometimes too fanaticism about the Lean Startup theory. Too often people get stuck in the loop of testing and testing without really following a clear entrepreneurial idea. The risk is to end up building a nicely market-fitting product, but not a disruptive/visionary product. Andreas Klinger described this amazingly well in his blog post "Why Lean Startup Sucks For Startups"... he wrote right after the Leas Startup Conference of 2013 :) http://klinger.io/post/69794653694/why-lean-startup-sucks-fo...
enricobruschini··on SpaceX Profitable as Musk Pulls in NASA Contracts, Google Cash
Would have made sense to build it closer to the equator? As from my orbits class the more you get closer to the equator, the bigger is your launches time-window to hit the target orbit. Texas sounds unreasonable, does anybody knows/sees other good reasons?
enricobruschini··on Uber Acquires Mapping Startup DeCarta
Why UBER is not using Google Maps and instead chose Apple Maps? I heard from many drivers they hate UBER for their maps and they's rather prefer Lyft for that reason. Im wondering why instead of using Google Maps they had to buy a company.
enricobruschini··on New services expand IBM Watson capabilities to images, speech, and more
I've been developing a product with Watson from within the Partner Ecosystem, some of those capabilities are pretty useful. Others, sometimes, are kind of confusing, creating a broad overpopulated constellation of Watson-based APIs inside Bluemix.
