ender89··on This Is Not a Day Care. It’s a University
Hey, this is a safe space for anti-safe-spacers and you're making us feel distinctly unsafe by being purposefully hurtful; stating that all anti-safe-spacers are hateful sexist racists who don't notice when someone leaves a comparison dangling (There's a stark difference between "this isn't a place for hurtful things" and what?). You should know that anti-safe-spacers are a diverse group of individuals from all walks of life, genders, races, and wolf/human hybrids. We're only intolerant of people who are intolerant of other people's cultures. And the Dutch.

Also, I hope you realize how silly you sound. "Safe Spaces" are supposed to be free from antagonizing rhetoric, violence, and judgement. Its not supposed to be safe from the emotional pain you feel when someone tells you that you might be wrong for the first time in your life, or that a college sorority girl dressing up as Mulan isn't culturally insensitive (especially in today's world where the lines that traditionally divide us are being constantly eroded by near instant communication and a sub 24 hour flight to anywhere on the globe), or that god forbid that racism is not exclusive to white people of Anglo-Saxon decent. College specifically is about challenging world views and teaching students first and fore most how to become citizens of the world. Its not for "safe spaces" where students are tucked into comfortable rooms with rounded corners and foam flooring to make sure they never hurt themselves.

ender89··on CEO who raised price of pill to $700 calls journalist a ‘moron’ for asking why
He would have asked "Let's see if we can get a statement from @MartinShkreli. Martin, your co. just hiked the price of an old drug - new to you - by 5000%. Why, aside from the obvious desire to milk more money than a Saudi oil shiekh from a population that has little choice but to pay outlandish prices for a life-saving medication, would you raise the price so drastically?", but twitter has a character limit.

Although I do love the idea of making the people who are suffering now bankroll the research to cure people tomorrow. Its just so logical and thoroughly misguided.

Most programming workshops would be improved with some flowers (whats this "nature" thing again? sounds scary), cupcake tastings, and yoga.
ender89··on Ask HN: How screwed is a 17-year-old trying to enter US with encrypted laptop?

ender89··on Why Your Dog Can Get Vaccinated Against Lyme Disease and You Can’t (2012)
The first time I got lyme in like 1995 or so, no one really knew what it was, and these were doctors close enough to Lyme to actually know it as a town. I remember I got passed around the pediatrics office I attended and finally had to go to a specialist in a major children's hospital before it was correctly diagnosed and treated. Its hard to be treated in areas outside normal lyme areas because its most common symptoms are pretty much generic lethargy and pain (the trademark bullseye rash doesn't always make an appearance).
ender89··on Why Your Dog Can Get Vaccinated Against Lyme Disease and You Can’t (2012)
Eh, I feel like its not so bad after the first few times. I did get bell's palsy last time, and I walked around looking like a stroke victim for a bit, but not that bad all in all.
ender89··on Papas, please let your babies grow up to be princesses
Really this wraps around to the notion that "feminine" things are bad, and that feminine things detract from otherwise masculine pursuits. Kind of like the idea that girls aren't real engineers unless they look, dress, and smell like teenage-boy nerds.

ender89··on Marissa Mayer makes 1,100 Yahooers jobless, calls it a 'remix'
In other news, Yahoo has more than 1100 employees. Presumably they spent their days wondering how yahoo can justify so many employees and playing internet pool on yahoo games.
ender89··on Wi-Fi hack creates 'no iOS zone' that cripples iPhones and iPads
It could be used to paralyze communication networks and, in conjunction with other actions, could be catastrophic. Or even just used to interrupt iOS service for anyone that uses it in part of their job. You could go small and interrupt a small business's iPad POS, or you could disable an airplane's usage manual running on the cockpit iPad. There's a lot of stuff you could do with this exploit.

ender89··on I Was Arrested for Learning a Foreign Language. Today, I Have Some Closure
The most baffling thing about this whole situation is that one would think that learning a language would be a very futile pursuit for a suicide bomber.
ender89··on BBC uses RIPA terrorism laws to catch TV licence fee dodgers in Northern Ireland
The craziest part of this is that in the UK you need to pay a fee to pick up publicly broadcasted unencrypted television signals. I wonder what the hell is the basis of this "fee"?
ender89··on BBC: ISPs Should Assume Heavy VPN Users Are Pirates [Sept. 2014]
The problem here is that the assumption is that if you don't want someone looking at your data, you have something to hide. You could use a vpn and be doing completely legitimate things, like downloading games off of steam or uploading work to the company server (could be a big file if you're like an animator or something!). You shouldn't be compelled to let your government causally monitor all your communications.

ender89··on When Women Become Men at Wellesley
There's a whole "have your cake and eat it too" mentality going on here that's kind of upsetting. These trans students are men, and yet they are attending a women's college, living in women's dorms. They're apparently making waves because they're trying to remove the emphasis on gender(and women specifically) from a women's college. In other words, tim is trying to rob the university from its identity because he slipped in through a loop hole and feels discriminated against because (surprise!) the school is purpose built to exclude men. Would you agree with an atheist student at a private religious university trying to remove references to god from the school charter? or a religious student trying to add references to god to a public university charter? Of course not! Got to give it to Wellesley for not kicking his ass out upon realizing that he lied about the primary qualification for attendance, but I don't think that give him the right to try and remake the school in his own image.

ender89··on India’s Toilet Race Failing as Villages Don’t Use Them
... I mean, if you showed me a dingy outhouse on one hand and a serene field on the other, I can kind of see the appeal. Until you realize that the serene field is full of other people's poop anyway.
ender89··on Why does Windows think that my wireless keyboard is a toaster?
Can confirm, no manager listens to anything you say after you admit that its working. The most I'll ever admit to is being "just about ready for QC".
ender89··on Why does Windows think that my wireless keyboard is a toaster?
More like "Hey boss, we need to pay someone to make a keyboard icon!" "Hahaha, no. Work it out." and why worry about an icon when you have a perfectly good toaster as a placeholder?

ender89··on Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality
I tried reading this, and I found that I wasn't a fan for two very specific reasons: First, Harry is imbued with a level of knowledge you'd be hard pressed to find at the world's top universities, and that always takes me out of a story. Its not his intelligence that bothers me, but the fact that he's a veritable walking scientific encyclopedia. Secondly, by adding rationality to Harry, the author also seems to have added a healthy dose of irrational fears. There's a moment that is the polar opposite of the original stories where harry decides that "voldemort" is a terrifying name and should be replaced with with "He-who-must-not-be-named". Which is silly and a clear misunderstanding of what drives harry potter and a clear misunderstanding of what "rationality" means.
ender89··on Two Girls, a Golden Balloon, and Fate
No, no, these things tend to happen when your planet is located in a Plural sector (In our case, plural Z). Possibly one of the girls was pulled in from a different timeline when the earth reasserted itself after the vogon demolition. Or, quite possibly, the golden balloon was a remanifestation of the golden bucket, also known as the heart of gold, which is the center of the infinite improbability drive, and everyone knows that the field it generates has far reaching but relatively minor consequences on the lives it touches.
