Do you have a source? I'd love to read more. :)

Jesus Christ on a pogo stick, execution for stealing 12 pence worth of stuff? That's crazy! Adjusting for inflation[1][2], that would be the same as nowadays being executed for stealing £5!

[1] According to https://www.bankofengland.co.uk/education/education-resource..., 12 pence (1 shilling, or 1/20 of a pound)) in the old £sd system is equal to 5 pence (or £0.05) in the later decimal system.

[2] According to https://www.bankofengland.co.uk/monetary-policy/inflation/in..., £0.05 (decimal) in 1832 would be equivalent to £5.02 in 2026 Aug.

encrypted_bird··on I don't like passkeys
What is the confusion here? Like it or not (and I definitely don't like it), most people use Chrome.
encrypted_bird··on I don't like passkeys
I love your username. /)
encrypted_bird··on The American Religion of Self-Storage Facilities
Ah. Fair enough. Haha.

And rarely. There is unfortunately a dirth of trees in my area since I live in a small farming town.

encrypted_bird··on The American Religion of Self-Storage Facilities
Yeah, those are good points I hadn't really thought of much. Thanks! I guess it's less of a priority for me because I bought my car for $1000 and it came with Michigan rust already. Lol.
encrypted_bird··on The American Religion of Self-Storage Facilities
That's surprising. I once tried an automated car wash just to see what all the hullabaloo was about and I think the rain actually does a better job. Worst $5 I've ever spent...
encrypted_bird··on The American Religion of Self-Storage Facilities
Where do you live? I live in the Midwest (SE MI) and when there's rain it tends to be medium-to-heavy rain and with wind so sideways.
encrypted_bird··on The American Religion of Self-Storage Facilities
I personally don't get car washes. I just wait for it to rain. Then free car wash...

As someone who doesn't know most of the tells but genuinely wants to know, what are some of the things that tells you it's AI-generated?
encrypted_bird··on IKEA made a mod for Skyrim [video]
Meanwhile, I'm still waiting for a mod that gives mustaches to mudcrabs.

The mudcrabs are a proud and fancy race!

Yeah, they fucking *would*.

encrypted_bird··on How to buy a good car for $1000
Jesus, only $500 a *year*?? May I ask where you live in? I live in MI and I pay about $990 a year for minimum liability insurance.

Canon, not cannon. Then again, since this is about war, maybe it should be cannon. Lol.

encrypted_bird··on Paint.net 5.2 alpha now runs on Linux
Paint.NET has a *lot* of legacy code that cannot just be discarded. The dev said as much in their original post.
encrypted_bird··on Hang on to Your Firefox
>You could probably just use an extension that unloads inactive tabs from RAM

Doesn't Firefox already do this? (Or at least have an option for it?)

encrypted_bird··on Hang on to Your Firefox
Exactly this. I used to be a tab minimalist, but vertical tabs + tab groups made having lots of tabs open viable for me.
encrypted_bird··on Hang on to Your Firefox
Genuine thought: maybe it's the separate windows?
encrypted_bird··on OpenShot 4.0 – Open-source video editor
Of course it's QT. One might even say it's adorable.
encrypted_bird··on How much of HN is AI?
>because the technology needs to find it's way into applications and appliances.

I hear what you're saying, but speaking for myself: can we *not*? I really have absolutely zero interest in having ChatGPT on my microwave or refrigerator. In fact, I'd rather have my appliances *not* be connected to the Internet, all things being equal.

encrypted_bird··on Firefox 157 will include JPEG XL by default on all platforms
>Note also that converting jpeg to jxl is 100% reversible, you can convert it back to exactly the same image (byte for byte identical) if you need to.

Speaking as someone who loves JXL, I have a serious question: I once used ImageMagick to convert a JPG to a JXL, and then back to JPG, and the final JPG was a noticeably different file size compared to the source JPG.

What am I misunderstanding here?
