Because I have no interest in attracting the apocalyptic ire that is the Internal Revenue Service. You don't fuck with the organization that took down Al Capone or that even the _Joker_ is deathly afraid of.

encrypted_bird··on Show HN: Autism Simulator
_Thank_ you. I'm seeing a LOT of people in this thread who do not understand autism at _all_ and yet claim it's really not much different than neurotypical people's experience.

"Why should x situation be like y difficulty? I don't understand."

"No, you _don't_ understand, because you're not autistic. Which isn't really an insult but it is the case. So why you gotta brush off our struggles like you do get it."

Being autistic is exhausting on a _whole different level_. It is NOT comparable to neurotypicals' experiences except superficially.

The moon landing was filmed. Problem is, Stanley Kubrick was such a perfectionist that he _demanded_ they film on location.
encrypted_bird··on Cloudflare Email Service: private beta
As rumbefrog said, not exactly an option if they're the biggest/only game in town or if no one else has a feature you absolutely rely on.

> Cloudflare's ToS and contracts prevent them from doing nastiness with your data without breach ...

Contracts can be and regularly are changed. Ebay, PayPal, Etsy, Google, Microsoft, ad nauseum all have done this many times.

Contract-based protections mean very little if those clauses are non-perpetual and revokable.

1080p is 2K. The value of the "K" coefficient is determined by the x axis, not the y axis. That's why 4K is 3840x2160.

16K = 15360x8640 8K = 7680x4320 4K = 3840x2160 2K = 1920x1080 1K = 960x540

(Every value is a doubling of the tier below it, or in the case of "1K" a halving.)

I don't see how that would work with videos that don't have differeny original sources. For example, Netflix-original shows/movies. While a small fraction are released on DVD/Blu-ray, the vast majority are only accessible through Netflix, nowhere else.
encrypted_bird··on Human writers have always used the em dash
Hello, felloe Linux user!

That being said, fyi, most Linux distros (or at least many!) have by default the shortcut `ctrl+shift+U` then the hex value of the Unicode character.

So, for example, the en dash is U+2013 and the em dash is U+2014, so you would press `ctrl+shift+U` then type in "2014" then space and it inputs it!

I use it all the time! It's very useful!

Come on. This is Hacker News: criticism is fine, but make it constructive. No need to make such a dismissive comment. The other replies were also critical of it, but they all gave reasons. Please be better next time, and I hope you have an otherwise great day, friend!
encrypted_bird··on AI web crawlers are destroying websites in their never-ending content hunger
Hey, I just wanted to say your site is amazing and has helped me SO much and I am incredibly grateful for all your hard work. I would become a patron if I could afford it, but I can barely make ends meet and don't have $447 a month to spare. :(

No, a torch has a far shorter "beam", while a lightsaber is a very large "beam" compressed into a cylindrical shape by magnetic fields.

Either that or they meant "torch" as in "flashlight", which I've seen shitty lightsabers be.

I fully agree, and speaking as someone macroinsectophobia (fear of large or many insect (or insect-like) creatures), seeing it really makes me uncomfortable. It isn't enough to send me into panic mode or anything, but damn if it doesn't freak me out.

I also use YouTube, but I don't use the internal YouTube subscription function; I just subscribe to each channel's RSS feed and use an RSS notifier browser extension.

I also try to limit how many channels I track to only around a dozen tops (if that), most of which are music artist channels to let me know when they have a new song out.

The few that aren't music channels I just download with yt-dlp and temporarily put them on my NAS to watch with my Emby server. This way, I can watch them from the comfort of my couch and I don't have to deal with ads. :)

encrypted_bird··on Car companies are in a billion-dollar software war
I do like me a good 90s car. Honestly, though, my above-listed criteria would be my ideal car. But, a good number of cars up through the 00s would be enjoyable for me, if not exactly perfect. For example, the 2007 Dodge Charger is pretty good. :)

While I definitely hope Slate is a huge success and I really love its premise, it's a shame that, judging from their homepage images, the dashboard is an LCD screen, no dials.

Apologies, everyone, for the poor formatting by the way. It seems HN does not in fact support markdown lists.

Simple to think of, difficult to implement.

Yep, I can see it.

encrypted_bird··on Before the Undo Command, There Was the Electric Eraser
While I will admit the article was absolutely fascinating (as the subject of tech & science history almost always is), I must also say that there is a special place in hell for web developers who intentionally require JavaScript to be enabled in order to view a simple JPEG image.
encrypted_bird··on Car companies are in a billion-dollar software war
My ideal car:

- No Internet connection - No touchscreens - No LCD dashboard; I like dials. - 100% user-repairable; there should be no need to go to a dealer if one can easily fix a problem themselves or one wants to go to an independent mechanic (often cheaper!) - Buttons and (analog, not digital) dials for the media center - Media center with ONLY Bluetooth, CD player, and radio media center - Analog locks (not software based) - A Physical, metal key (not a chip)—I like to be able to go to my local hardware or key shop and make backups, thank you very much. - I don't need navigation; I have a phone for that.

And I don't need an app either:

- Wanna check the fuel/battery level? A little thing called a fuel gauge on the dashboard will work just fine. - Wanna check the tire pressure? Use a pressure gauge, feel the tire directly, or look at the tire, or base it on feeling while driving, i.e. the same little things we've done for decades just fine (not to mention the app or dashboard may not take into account used or third-party tires, as each tire brand/type/size is filled up to its own pressure rating). - Wanna lock/unlock doors remotely? Detached key fob. - Need diagnostics? OBDII still works excellently.

While I don't dismiss your general point, I will say that anyone who says "how hard can it be" really needs to consider they are falling victim to the Dunning-Kruger Effect. In my experience, that phrase is (typically) a red flag for the latter.

> I'm not shouting.

In text format, all-caps or the use of an exclamation mark are often used to indicate shouting.

So, it is not unreasonable for people to read your sentence as such.
