encrypted_bird··on Linux explores new way of authenticating developers and their code
Thanks, I'll give it a watch! <3
encrypted_bird··on Keep Android Open
You're probably right about why I'm getting downvoted. But, you know, in my honest opinion, those people are just further demonstrating my point. They're probably actually paid well, or at least are afraid to badmouth the hand that feeds them.

But people need to realize that most of the population aren't treated well or paid well. Most of us don't have the luxury of being SWEs, or even white-collar workers for that matter. Most of us struggle to even put food on the table and have to scrounge week to week, let alone month to month.

So, I'm not bothered by the bootlickers downvoting me. At best, they're fooling themselves; at worst, they're class traitors.

If you ask me, the time for tactful language is long over.

xz backdoor? What's that?

> I'm a bit ashamed to have to explain this on HN.

Don't be. Like it or not, this is a site run by venture capitalists and populated most heavily by software engineers, both of which have historically been treated well by capitalism.

Although it's improved in recent years, I've noticed there's still a lot of corporate bootlickers on this site.

Yes, it saddens me too.

encrypted_bird··on I built Timeframe, our family e-paper dashboard
OpenMeteo is pretty amazing too, and doesn't require an account or API key, which is nice.
encrypted_bird··on Trump's global tariffs struck down by US Supreme Court
Ah.

Thank you. :)

encrypted_bird··on Across the US, people are dismantling and destroying Flock surveillance cameras
> I haste Flock Safety cameras.

Was this a typo? If not, what does "haste" mean in this context? (I'm not messing with you; I'm genuinely wondering.)

encrypted_bird··on Trump's global tariffs struck down by US Supreme Court
Apologies, but I'm having a hard time parsing your sentence.

What exactly are you saying?

encrypted_bird··on JPEG XL Test Page
When I commented that, I did not realize Gnome Web was a web browser (I'd never heard of it frankly), let alone a non-Firefox-based browser. Lol.
encrypted_bird··on JPEG XL Test Page
Have you tried KeePassXL with SyncThing? I've heard good things about that setup.
encrypted_bird··on Boeing knew of flaw in part linked to UPS plane crash, NTSB report says
Care to say why?

Seems like a perfectly fine phrase to me.

encrypted_bird··on 6-Day and IP Address Certificates Are Generally Available
Not my god. My god meant to go into work but got wasted and eventually passed out in the bathtub, fully clothed and holding a bowl of riceroni.
encrypted_bird··on 6-Day and IP Address Certificates Are Generally Available
I just got home from a stressful day in retail (oh who am I kidding; every day is stress in retail) and this gave me a chuckle I really needed. Thank you.
encrypted_bird··on Ask HN: How can we solve the loneliness epidemic?
A big problem for me personally is that, well, frankly, there really aren't many options around me. I live in a small farming town of 6000 people, and most things are 25-45 min away *by car*.
encrypted_bird··on Ask HN: How can we solve the loneliness epidemic?
I want to do this "grow at least 2 roots into your community" idea but a huge challenge for me is simply that I'm 2nd shift. That naturally leads to a lot more isolation than 1st shift. (3rd shifties, my heart goes out to you. I've done that job. Not a fun time personally.)
encrypted_bird··on BYD's cheapest electric cars to have Lidar self-driving tech
And most of those SUVs are the same size that most pickup trucks used to be 10-20 years ago. Even the smallest US vehicles are oversized now.
encrypted_bird··on Why Is Greenland Part of the Kingdom of Denmark? A Short History
Not parent, but while I agree with you, I have very little faith (virtually none) in that happening. Most people are in a week-to-week or month-to-month financial situation; so, even if the desire & political will were to manifest, most people literally can't afford to strike.
encrypted_bird··on Private equity firms acquired more than 500 autism centers in past decade: study
I agree! I think this kind of resource would be very useful to a lot of people!
encrypted_bird··on Why the French don't obsess over purpose
I don't have astronomical ambitions, and I am so far past unhappy with my situation. It does calm me a bit to know that there are people who are.

So, in short, what I'm saying is that I am genuinely happy for you. :')

encrypted_bird··on How Markdown took over the world
A lot of the responses to your comment imo are kinda missing your point. I don't use Apple products, but I do understand what you're saying. You want an editor that also has an option for previewing the markup text in its formatted view.

It's officially only available for Linux (the Windows version is currently under development), and like I said, I don't use Apple products, and idk how familiar you are with manually compiling source code or how good Wine is on Macs, but maybe [Remarkable](https://remarkableapp.github.io/) could be an option?

Just thought I'd give my $2.70. ;)

encrypted_bird··on Web Browsers have stopped blocking pop-ups
To be fair, the name isn't doing it any favors. "Consent-o-matic" sounds like it "automatically consents".
encrypted_bird··on A faster heart for F-Droid
I guess that is the beauty of opinions: they can be different from person to person. In my case, I would rather avoid CloudFlare if possible.
encrypted_bird··on A faster heart for F-Droid
Counterpoint: that would require using CloudFlare.
encrypted_bird··on GOG is getting acquired by its original co-founder
This.

And if it doesn't wanna work on Proton, GEProton might work. I've had a few games like that. (I usually default to the latter and use the former as a fallback.)

encrypted_bird··on Toll roads are spreading in America
I always get confused by people saying public transportation makes no sense for rural people. I think it makes more sense, provided you use the right kind of public transportation for the right kind of rural community.

A large, spread-out community? Perhaps not so much.

But a small town where 80% of the people commute to surrounding cities? That'd be a great case for 1 or more commuter train, depending on direction and demand.

encrypted_bird··on Toll roads are spreading in America
"electronic passes"

"pay by toll"

These are still toll roads, just a more modern iteration. Toll road ≠ physical cash

encrypted_bird··on 2025 was the year Xbox died
While I agree with your overall point (that Sony's customer support in this case is terrible), I feel it also illustrates the biggest flaw in SAAS gaming and the inability to back up game installers (á la GOG) if one wishes to: that if someone else dictates your access to games you supposedly own, then you don't actually own it. Access = ownership.

encrypted_bird··on Ask HN: What did you read in 2025?
Not quite finished yet (and I don't think I will by the end of the year), but I've been reading Star Trek: A Woman's Trek, by Nana Visitor. I've really been loving it and it's been fascinating learning about the risks & challenges that the various women in Trek! The stories span the different shows too, from Dorothy Fontana (writer) to Nichelle Nichols (Nyota Uhura), Majel Barrett-Roddenberry (Nurse/Doctor Chapel / Lwaxana Troi / so many computer voices), Terry Farrell (Jadzia Dax), Penny Johnson Jerald (Kassidy Yates), and, of course, Nana Visitor (Kira Nerys)!
