encrypted_bird··on Remote workers report the highest well-being in study of 7,700 employees
That...sounds horrific. Oh my goodness.
encrypted_bird··on Remote workers report the highest well-being in study of 7,700 employees
What is "hot desking"? Is it as horrifying as it sounds?
encrypted_bird··on How we used to get jobs: A newspaper classifieds story
That seems like a really niche term. Parent really should've specified what it meant instead of assuming everyone in the world would automatically know what it meant.

On that note, thanks for explaining it to me.

encrypted_bird··on How we used to get jobs: A newspaper classifieds story
What does DMV stand for in this context?
encrypted_bird··on US Military's cyber command unit grapples with cluster of deaths by suicide
>You attack me personally while adding nothing to the actual topic at hand.

My goal was never to contribute to the discussion but merely to explain that your attitude will not win any converts to your arguments.

People are having good discussions in good faith here and you're angry and contemptuous toward them.

Anyway...it seems you have no as much interest in hearing me than you have in admitting your self-sabotaging emotional state. I am done with this topic.

Good day.

encrypted_bird··on US Military's cyber command unit grapples with cluster of deaths by suicide
>"Partially agreeing" while baselessly denying the central point is what exactly in your book?

It means partially agreeing, and quite respectfully, I might add. You, however, were only *dis*respectful, downright rude in fact.

>Treating it at the same level of effort as every other infotainment piece is a failure of judgement.

I'm not treating anything as the same as any level of effort. All I'm saying is if you act like a dick, people will be much less likely to give you any attention, even if something you say is correct.

encrypted_bird··on US Military's cyber command unit grapples with cluster of deaths by suicide
You know, people would be more receptive to you if you wouldn't talk down on them. I mean, for gods' sakes, parent specifically partially agreed with you(!) and yet you *still* talked down to them.
encrypted_bird··on All of Winona Police Department's Flock cameras cut down and stolen
It's not about the company; it's about the technology. Whether a Flock-branded camera or not, ALPRs as a technology is *dangerous*.

From deflock.org itself:

> Flock is not the only ALPR vendor, and other vendors still participate in similar practices. See this list of other common ALPR vendors.[1]

encrypted_bird··on Most countries provide between 20 and 40 paid days off
Exactly. I work in retail and we have ONE guaranteed day off each year: Christmas Day. (And a lot of retail employees don't have even this!) And until recently, I never got holiday pay either.
encrypted_bird··on Most countries provide between 20 and 40 paid days off
I work in the US service industry (retail), and until recently I didn't have sick time at all. The only reason I do now is because I'm a part of a union (very rare for retail workers) and they argued for sick time. And it's accrued sick time at that.

(This is all me agreeing with you, btw.)

encrypted_bird··on BMW Is Showing Commercials on Their Car's Dash Screens as a Treat
> at least they have no screens

IIRC their dash is just a screen. No actual dials or gauges unfortunately. :(

encrypted_bird··on How Google helped destroy adoption of RSS feeds (2023)
Fun Fact: Most, if not all, YouTube channels automatically have an RSS feed. That's what I use to follow channels I like. No Google account necessary.
encrypted_bird··on I'm 38 and I Can't Support Myself Anymore
Just as an aside, I suspect the last line had an implied "/s". If so, I think they really should have included it.

That is extremely unfortunate. :(

The day I can no longer use Old Reddit is the day I stop using Reddit.

encrypted_bird··on A taxonomy of omnicidal futures involving artificial intelligence (2025)
I don't get even a single ad on that TV Tropes page.

Do you not use an adblocker?

encrypted_bird··on So Reddit has decided that plain HTML is unsafe
You can do it without logging in too if you use an extension that autoredirects. That's what I do. I use a FF extension called Old Reddit Redirect.

encrypted_bird··on House passes bill to enact year-round Daylight Saving Time across the country
Oh.

Hey, thanks y'all for explaining it to me. :)

encrypted_bird··on I'm a USB-C Maximalist
RIP Mitch Hedburg
encrypted_bird··on House passes bill to enact year-round Daylight Saving Time across the country
So what you're saying is I have it backward. In the summer, without DST, the sun would rise like an hour earlier than with DST.

Is that correct?

encrypted_bird··on House passes bill to enact year-round Daylight Saving Time across the country
Something I genuinely don't understand: everyone is saying that with DST, the sun rises later in the day. But as someone who doesn't work first shift and regularly goes to bed anytime between 04:00 and 06:00, I can tell you with certainty that in the summer time (when DST is active), the sun always comes up *way* sooner. I typically despise DST because I always struggle to fall asleep due to the damned sun coming up right as I go to bed.

Meanwhile, in the winter, the sun typically doesn't start to rise until closer to 08:00.

encrypted_bird··on America, 1926: A forgotten 100-year-old report
It's not an excuse. Many of us saw this coming as far back as 2016, and tried every step of the way to fight against Trump's rise to power.

We are not all monsters. It's as simple as that.

encrypted_bird··on America, 1926: A forgotten 100-year-old report
You know, not all of us wished for him. Many of us not only saw all this coming from a mile away, but also fought against it every step of the way.

I would not say have pity for everyone, but at least have pity for those incompatible with our cruel society who are nevertheless stuck within it.

You joke, but...
encrypted_bird··on Michigan bill would bar employers from requiring after-hours coms with workers
Haha, no way is the store I'm talking about ever hiring a security guard. Corporate doesn't give them enough money to hire enough people, let alone a security guard.
encrypted_bird··on Michigan bill would bar employers from requiring after-hours coms with workers
One thing that happens a LOT in retail is, say if a store closes at 10pm, a customer will walk in at 9:58pm, be there for 30 min to an hour, and employees HAVE to stay until they leave and cannot kick them out. If they do, they can get written up. Not all businesses do this obviously, but I've worked in retail long enough to have seen this happen a lot.
encrypted_bird··on PlayStation Is Deleting 551 Movies from Customers' Accounts
Of course! It's fantastic. I went from Plex --> Emby --> Jellyfin and honestly if I could have afforded it I would have purchased the 100 USD lifetime license. They work really hard and deserve the money.
encrypted_bird··on PlayStation Is Deleting 551 Movies from Customers' Accounts
If you're not experienced in media servers, I'd recommend a QNAP NAS and then install either Jellyfin or Emby. (Plex has really gone downhill in the last 10 years imho.) QNAP is terrible for experienced users, but as Baby's First NAS it's absolutely sublime.
