emsign··on Has the New Cocaine Arrived?
The title is misleading. 3-MMC differs from Cocaine in that it doesn't turn you into an egomaniac asshole, which is due to its acting on the Serotonin receptors.
emsign··on Danube's record low levels force shutdown of Hungary's only nuclear plant
They are busy hitting downvote on comments on HN!
emsign··on Danube's record low levels force shutdown of Hungary's only nuclear plant
Geothermal and storage is worth investing in, investing in nuclear is not. NPPs are simply too expensive and you won't find investors unless you heavily subsidize it with tax money. Only compnies willing to invest in NPPs are those with virtually free money: the handful of AI big tech giants.
emsign··on Danube's record low levels force shutdown of Hungary's only nuclear plant
Electricity costs by nuclear power is heavily subsidized by tax money in France, so the French are paying the higher costs anyway. Just saying. Maybe there's a technical solution involving nuclear but it's really expensive compared to the much cheaper technical solution: renewable energy.
emsign··on Danube's record low levels force shutdown of Hungary's only nuclear plant
Not true at all. It's both in France and increasingly because the rivers run dry in the summer. Besides killing rivers for electricity and for "saving CO2" is as stupid as burning coal to keep HVACs running becauae the summers are getting hotter and hotter each year.
emsign··on Danube's record low levels force shutdown of Hungary's only nuclear plant
First of all you can't retrofit every npp with that, it's a lie. And eve; if you could, you are correct, it's financially not viable. Renewable energy is always the cheaper option by far.
emsign··on Danube's record low levels force shutdown of Hungary's only nuclear plant
This is what nuclear power enthusists like to ignore when they talk about nuclear power being a solution to energy and climate change.
emsign··on Starling: The first real desktop written by AI
This community is very pro-AI. Just look at the top news, sometimes it's 3/4 AI topics. AI topics get hundreds of likes, AI critical news or stuff that hints at problems and undesirable consequences of the AI boom only get a fraction of it. HN readers just do not care. The majority here is hyped about AI. HN changed a lot since the LLM boom, not to the better, it got really boring in fact.
emsign··on A.I. companies are recruiting electricians and carpenters by the thousands
There was a high demand for trade jobs even before. Because people have been told to take a loans and go to college to make more $$$ for decades, there's been a labor shortage in trade jobs for quite a while now.
emsign··on A.I. companies are recruiting electricians and carpenters by the thousands
This is horrible. AI industry is sucking the economy dry of resources and labor, making everything more expensive who is not an AI company.
emsign··on Una GPS smart watch – Repairable, USB-C charging, developer-friendly
So this one breaks when it breaks and the company is no more.
emsign··on Starling: The first real desktop written by AI
No, thanks. I'll give this a pass.
emsign··on AI companies are shredding rare books
That's exactly why I have been hoarding physical media for years now. I knew they would be buying them up, besides the usual dumpster fire they would end up in when people throw them away. CDs, DVDs, BluRays, books, vinyl, everything. And as they are physical they are not prone to retro-editing. Just like in 1984.

Luckily I don't live in NYC where book hoarders are being evicted because of "fire hazard". Just like in Fahrenheit 451.

emsign··on Nvidia weighs $250B backstop for OpenAI's Ohio data center lease
Looking at Russia it's fascinating to see how relatively cheap waves of drones can destroy billions of dollars worth in a single day at Wildberries, destabilizing the entire Russian economy.

This data center will cost 500bn and is a pretty big target, ok it's not as flammable as cardboard and plastics. But it's so much bigger, sure you can knock it offline easily and you don't even need Starlink, inertia based navigation to locate it and simple machine vision to find the most vulnerable parts will do.

Some Chinese weather balloons as drone mother ships could easily visit it every single day. I guess they should also invest in midrange drone and ballistic missile defense that doesn't need replenishing for weeks. But hey, I'm just an idiot with an opinion. lmao

emsign··on Show HN: A new kind of FPS aim trainer
Firefox is definitely choppy for me renderingwise. I use Vivaldi which is Chromium based and the only choppiness comes from the friction of my sweaty wrist on the gamepad. If I hover my wrist and only let it basically rest on the mouse itself, tracking becomes smooth. Changing my hand motion and stance is definitely part of the training process to become a better player.
emsign··on Show HN: A new kind of FPS aim trainer
It's called "Open"Aim. Where is the source code then?
emsign··on The infinite scroll may become endangered if controversial Calif. law passes
Endangered? This is great news! It's one of the things that make social media a drug.
emsign··on EU will seek to limit children's access to social media
Because Meta lobbyied massively for this version of the law. So they keep their addictive apps as they are.
emsign··on Leak of San Francisco Police Drone Footage Exposes Reality of Urban Surveillance
I think they also use planes with state of the art optics and cameras in other major US cities, especially before certain events, to go back in time later. If a crime happens they can trace back cars and suspects in the video archive. And I guess they might also do number plate recognition by default, to get even quicker results.
emsign··on What's slowing down the AI buildout

emsign··on Meta reuses old RAM in new servers with custom bridge chip

emsign··on Right to Local Intelligence
Now the investors try to hold the bubble together by regulatory capture. They must really fear the worst. A bailout is going to cost their puppet in the White House even the last supporters in his base.

emsign··on Spain Orders Blacklist of Palantir from Public and Private Companies
Great news for Spain. I hope more European countries wake up to what's going on.
emsign··on Nvidia offers startup customers chance to swap compute power for revenue share
I knew it! Nvidia wants access to our hardware to lease it out for arbitrage profit. You shall own nothing even if you've payed for it. I've read the signs.
emsign··on The CEO of Mullvad is the main financer of the Swedish Örebro party
Your IP if you visit websites that identify you as anti-racist or non-white. Then give that IP to a racist government like in the US.

Trump denoted Antifa as terrorists for example.

emsign··on Meta building cloud business to sell excess AI capacity
Excess AI capacity? Huh? Wait a minute does that mean they've built more data centers than there's demand for? Oh! How did that happen? Well, I'm a complete idiot, a layman, not even a developer, what do I know about economics and technology...
