emptysongglass··on Rye: A Hassle-Free Python Experience
Everyone using Anaconda should switch to Mamba or Pixi, if not for speed, then for Anaconda's licensing switcheroo. Their legal department will chase you to the ends of the earth to get their money.

Really horrific experience with the folks at Anaconda. Stay far away.

emptysongglass··on Russian death camp: Three stories of Ukrainian prisoners
I don't see any comments calling for the extermination of Russians. It sounds like you're making things up to support your own agenda.
emptysongglass··on Russian death camp: Three stories of Ukrainian prisoners
Please don't whatabout in a thread clearly about two countries that are not the US. There are plenty of threads to go around about US imperialism that are a better place for your comment.

Perplexity too, which I've found the most useful for access to top-end AI models with a massive reduction in hallucinations.
emptysongglass··on EU Council to Vote on Chat Scanning Proposal on Thursday
No, you are incorrect. There is nothing socialist about the EU. Production, distribution and exchange are not owned by the people. Elected bodies owning them is not socialist.
emptysongglass··on Noam Chomsky 'no longer able to talk' after 'medical event'
I couldn't tell if you meant Minsky or Chomsky. Chomsky has doubled down on some pretty terrible positions into his old age, including "Ukraine asked for it" when it came to Russia's invasion of Ukraine or a continuous stream of apologies and whataboutisms for regimes who resemble his ideal politics in name only

I honestly don't know where you're going with this. You're theorizing about a condition you presumably don't have and then extrapolating your theories to professions you imagine to fit your idea of the "skillset" people with ADHD supposedly have.

There is not a skillset attached to the diagnosis of ADHD. There is no time to develop a skillset when the mind is constantly roving and unable to concentrate.

emptysongglass··on Brain overgrowth dictates autism severity, new research suggests
I did refute it, vociferously. If you have evidence for it being an evolutionary advantage, you are welcome to present it. The only scientific argument I've seen presented is that it made us better foragers but I ask you, who is foraging today? It's an utterly absurd position to take that it is a competitive advantage in a scenario no one in the first world will ever encounter.

> I can't speak for everyone, but I can say that my life has gone far better starting from the premise of "this is the way I am and I have to work with that while recognizing the realities of interacting with a world that operates on different rules from mine" than it has from the premise of "I'm broken and I need to fix myself so I'm like others".

One may accept without either self-hatred or celebration. This is the way things are, this is what there is. No need to embellish either negatively or positively. I think either path leads to poor outcomes societally.

emptysongglass··on Brain overgrowth dictates autism severity, new research suggests
I reject your premise entirely. The decades spent living unmedicated taught me that even when I was free to pursue my own interests, I was unable to engage with any of them in any depth, even those artistic or that might otherwise be a more suitable fit to certain spheres of human activity some argue (ignorantly) I'd have an evolutionary advantage in.

It impacts everything: healthy regulation of emotions, satisfaction in relationships intimate and platonic, frequency of damaging behavior like substance abuse, and addiction to novel sensory media.

It's novelty-seeking that is broken, that's all there is to it. We are lucky medication is available. Others who struggle with other mental pathologies are not so lucky.

Self-hatred is not the answer. So is any attempt to make it a virtue. You can just be with the acknowledgement of a maladaptive state.

emptysongglass··on Brain overgrowth dictates autism severity, new research suggests
We don't need to turn all pathologies into a positive trait to be cherished. We see this all too often today with e.g. ADHD (from which I suffer).

They are not our superhero abilities and they often come with extremely debilitating consequences.

I know many people on the spectrum and they suffer.

emptysongglass··on Google Meet rolls out multi-device adaptive audio merging
It does in ways you likely don't understand. At large enterprises with satellite offices, most of us don't want to sit at our desks and annoy our coworkers who are also in-office by taking calls at our desks. That leaves meeting rooms, which are at a premium.

Full single device for everyone would mean either everyone loudly shouting at their desks from within their noise canceling headphones or the company giving everyone an office with a door. As even Google doesn't do this for their employees, this is the next best thing we can do to save the sanity of our coworkers and respect remote colleagues dialing in by including them in a shared room meeting.

Unity re-homed to the US. SAP is a company that inflicts itself upon the industry: it is truly garbage-tier software. Nokia is a pale shadow of what it once was. Larian, OK? They're a game studio. Spotify just annihilated its workforce.

Companies with any flex in Europe are shambolic things that prey (see SAP) on customers working in a highly-regulated industry.

emptysongglass··on China starts military drills around Taiwan as 'harsh punishment'
China could win so much goodwill internationally if it just stopped threatening to invade Taiwan. You'd think the CPC would have learned from Europe's divorce from Russia but they still continue to choose belligerence at all costs. It's deeply hurting their image on the global stage and will only continue to isolate them economically and politically.

emptysongglass··on Big Tech to EU: "Drop Dead"
Taxis are not great here in Denmark, I don't know why you'd think to state this. They are also not "used all the time", instead used sparingly because of how outrageously expensive they are. Taxis are run by cartels here who have carved up Denmark amongst themselves. Drivers wait in queues, idling, and are paid to idle, sometimes dozens of cabs at a time. As a result, taxis in Denmark are some of the most expensive in the world.

Uber was banned here in Denmark because the taxi companies saw a threat to their easy money. Drivers wanted to drive independently and for a brief period where Uber was allowed to operate, competition flourished and prices came way down.

I'm not saying Uber is a good thing but pretending or even suggesting that the taxi companies are somehow an ethical or good alternative is absurd.

emptysongglass··on Elvish, expressive programming language and a versatile interactive shell
After being a fish die-hard for like a decade I finally gave up and learned to embrace Bash for its ubiquity. I realized all I cared about in fish was the built-in autocomplete, colorized output, and history management, which I was able to bolt on in short order to Bash.

Now I use ble.sh [1] and Oh My Bash [2] and Atuin [3] and I love it.

This is really a field where I feel standardization is the better path. It's a similar feeling I get when I observe the vast array of notetaking apps I see made and think here is a place where it would be better to pick one FOSS solution and contribute.

> Why should explain why something is NOT bad?

Because they're the one who made the claim without evidence or argument.

> It's up to you to convince him (or others) that it is bad

Yes, that's what I did.

> the reasoning "according to MY ethics it is bad" is not a good argument.

That wasn't my argument.

emptysongglass··on Tracking Illicit Brazilian Beef from the Amazon to Your Burger
> There is nothing wrong with eating meat and breeding cattle.

You're not doing a whole lot to explain why there is nothing wrong with eating meat and breeding cattle. I can think of a whole host of reasons why it is wrong in matters of ethics and mercy. Who is there to advocate for the cow? We know cows feel a gamut of emotions just as we do. They are not insensate. Most humans, when given a knife or a captive bolt gun and told to go kill that cow on yonder would not. So we externalize the death-making to slaughterhouse workers who coincidentally also suffer:

> ...SHWs had significantly higher levels of depression compared with office workers, but not butchers. The difference in depression rates differed from study to study, ranging from 10% to 50% [1]

There's really no good, ethical argument to be made for the killing of animals for food or pleasure. Did we need to do it once to survive as a species? Yes. Are we largely living in a post-scarcity world where those practices should now be challenged? Yes.

That's essentially what we do with cows. Do you see the hypocrisy? We don't inflict this on humans so why do it to other creatures which can know terror and pain just as we do?

Actually, you have a bug that has been unfixed for 5 years now. I know because I submitted it. Still no action.

Here's my last message to Proton Mail support, request ID 822331. I was directly told no resources would be spent on fixing it:
