This is not a normal looking clock - most clocks have either one color for all hands (second hand is thinnest and maybe also longest) or one color for hour/minute and one for second. I know that the hand lengths and thicknesses on this image are correct but for some reason I, a totally human person who grew up when analog clocks were still common, see this and think the hand on the 5 is the minute hand. How does the AI do if you just make all the hands black?
emosenkis··on Show HN: Codex Plays NetHack
Early learnings: - gpt-5.6-luna gives up too easily - /goal must be written to be hard to misinterpret ('ascend' can be interpreted as meaning to go up the stairs, thereby exiting the dungeon without playing)

gpt-5.6-sol is much more persistent - it's 36 minutes and several failures in and still going strong.

emosenkis··on Ask HN: What Linux distro do you daily drive?
Aurora for its rock solid reliability due to immutable root.

I got sick of breakage when updating to new Ubuntu releases.

Please explain how attacking a civilian data center in an uninvolved country is a "response".

You seem to be woefully uninformed on this subject. Far northern Israel was evacuated in 2023 and has long since moved on to reconstruction. No significant damage in the area was directly from Iran, it was all from Hezbollah (their proxy militia in Lebanon).
emosenkis··on Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (July 2026)
https://terminai.app

I got sick of choosing between the efficiency of working in a terminal and the magic powers of using AI (and of copy-pasting between the two). So I created a hybrid: Terminai is a transparent wrapper for any terminal that provides on-demand access to a TUI coding agent of your choice just a hotkey away (with built-in MCP and CLI that gives the AI access to your terminal).

emosenkis··on Herdr: One terminal to rule them all
I thought for a minute that they had built agent support for all terminals, which would render obsolete https://terminai.app which I just released. Luckily for me, this is on the other end of the spectrum. Maybe there would even be a use case for running herdr as the AI CLI inside of terminai.
emosenkis··on Employee gift ideas that make people feel bad
No, it's a thinly veiled advertisement for a company that facilitates... cash-equivalent bulk gifting.
emosenkis··on Rethinking Triplebyte
The concept sounds interesting but the execution seems lacking. I couldn't complete my profile because of spurious "check your inputs for errors" messages when I tried to click save on the very first section. Reloading the page several times didn't help though eventually a hard reload did. The project section silently lost an entry when I clicked save, presumably because I entered a year without a month. In the Java quiz, a question about generics failed to properly escape the angle brackets, making three of the four choices indistinguishable without reading the DOM. Question quality was quite variable.
emosenkis··on Show HN: ThingsTwin – 3D House Plan Based UI for Smart Home
That screenshot looks on the one hand very useful and on the other hand somewhat user-hostile since you have to build your own mental mapping from the architectural-style floor plan to the rooms in your house without any hints - I can imagine it being much easier to get used to or share with guests if there were sufficient icons or furniture shown in each room to make it obvious which room it is and which direction it's facing without having to consider the measurements and position relative to the other rooms.

It's disingenuous to proclaim that this is the only meaning - every person and culture that uses rings in this way applies their own meaning to it.

That said, when I was deciding whether or not I, as a male, wanted a wedding ring, this was exactly the reason that convinced me. I got married much younger than average and liked the idea of being visible "'off the market' and belongs to someone else."

emosenkis··on Elevator Sabbath service mode (SHO)
This is totally irrelevant to the discussion here - you're referring [in a rather toxic way] to ultra-Orthodoxy. My experience has been that ultra-Orthodox Jews are far less interested in and aware of the "thousand edge cases" since they prefer to stay far away from the proverbial 'edge'.
emosenkis··on Elevator Sabbath service mode (SHO)
1. Contexts in which a Shabbos goy is a permitted solution are quite restricted - it's not a "get out of Shabbos free" card. 2. A Shabbos goy, being human, has agency, while a device does not have agency, leaving the person using the device with responsibility for making the device do something.

Such a company is not entirely unimaginable given sufficiently roundabout sensing mechanisms. It could be especially useful in Israel due to the majority of the population being Jewish and with many neighborhoods and towns nearing 100% Jewish residents. Mostly, though, religious Jews in Israel are just used to not having a Shabbos goy as an option. That said, the one time I found myself really stuck in a bind where a Shabbos goy was the only reasonable solution, I was fortunate enough to see a non-Jewish taxi driver pull over within minutes of going outside to look for one.

They just released their first product using Risc-V: the Pinecil soldering iron. Honestly, RISC-V or not, I'm just planning to use mine for soldering...
emosenkis··on Wyze $20 Smart Watch
Any indication that these will be hackable like their cameras? What SoC are these based on?
emosenkis··on Pinecil: Portable USB-C RISC-V soldering iron
It may be illegal to sell locally but completely legal to import for personal use (e.g. because Pine64 isn't conducting business in your country at all, they have no obligation to comply with local regulations, only you, the importer of record, have those obligations and you probably aren't required to provide yourself with a warranty).
emosenkis··on Pinecil: Portable USB-C RISC-V soldering iron
I dunno, but my local postal service and/or their customs clearance procedures have a tendency to add a week or more of latency to delivery so I'm hoping that paying the extra $19 lets me avoid that...
emosenkis··on One Week of NixOS
Neat. How long has that been around? I tried NixOS in mid-2016. I don't recall what package I was trying to use at the time (likely PlatformIO/Arduino or Rust ecosystems), but the only advice I remember finding was to run some utility to rewrite the paths embedded in the binary.
emosenkis··on One Week of NixOS
I tried NixOS out for a while on my laptop. I loved the idea of an immutable system with all the config in one place. The implementation, though, was really a terrible user experience. I got past the weird config language, made a few contributions to Nixpkgs to get the packages I wanted, etc. The deal-breaker for me was the inability to run third-party binaries due to the departure from standard directory structure. After all the frustrations with NixOS, I was motivated to go to the opposite extreme so I could stop spending time maintaining my system and focus instead on the tasks that I wanted to use my system for. I've been [mostly] happily running Ubuntu LTS releases ever since.
emosenkis··on ESP8266 as Open Source Hardware
Shrug. This isn't an open source ESP8266 - it's an ESP8266 soldered onto an open source PCB. It doesn't have any wireless certifications so it's really only good for DIY unless you're planning to invest in getting the certifications, at which point you might as well work with the ESP8266 directly.

How many competing protocols are there for displaying images in a terminal? There's this, iTerm2 (also supported by Secure Shell[1])... any others? We need one unified standard[2] for graphics in terminal emulators!

emosenkis··on Groundbreaking discovery finally proves rain can move mountains
According to an article I read recently, the reason that equatorial reasons will see the greatest rise in sea level is that ice currently exerts a significant gravitational pull. As ice melts, that gravitational pull is reduced, causing sea levels to fall in the vicinity of the melting ice and to rise far away from the source of the melting.
emosenkis··on Ask HN: How to Become a Consultant?
Thanks! That was an interesting read. You talk a lot about how to understand the client but not at all about how that translates into whether it's a good client/consultant fit. Did you write about that somewhere?
emosenkis··on Show HN: A site to help you validate ideas in bulk
Looks cool! The pricing page doesn't include how long the free trial lasts and the $7 listed there doesn't match the $9 on the Stripe-hosted renewal page.

Of course that's true for accepting donations, but what about contributions that aren't treated as donations? Or could another foundation receive donations and hold them in trust until the new foundation is able to receive them? Is the new foundation actually expected to be in immediate need of funds such that this would be worth considering?
