I'm a beardless unix greybeard who loves dabbling in new computer languages.

I'm also fascinated in the psychology of belief.

Philosophically a skeptic, but I don't attend their services :-)

emmelaich··on The rise of eyes began with just one
Speculation 1. The bicameral mind was created as a result.

Speculation 2. The earliest creatures with two eyes may have been conjoined twins -- which were more successful in life than their single-celled/bodied siblings.

emmelaich··on The rise of eyes began with just one
I was looking for that too. I'm sure I've read that single cell animals were sensitive to light (and/or heat). I guess it's a speculation though, because we'd have no physical evidence.

In Australia we have https://dadlan.au/ monthly. Physical presence and remote is OK.

I would drive the car to the car wash, because I want to bring the car wash home and it's too heavy for me to carry all the way home.

emmelaich··on I want to wash my car. The car wash is 50 meters away. Should I walk or drive?
Yeh, if your other car was not already at the car wash, why would you even ask the question?
emmelaich··on Show HN: Klaw.sh – Kubernetes for AI agents
You should consider changing the subtitle then. Maybe "Kubernetes-like by AI" or "AI Kubernetes imitation" or ...?
emmelaich··on An AI agent published a hit piece on me – more things have happened
> The AI here was honestly acting 100% within the realm of “standard OSS discourse.”

No it was absolutely not. AIs don't have an excuse to make shit up just because it seems like someone else might have made shit up.

It's very disturbing that people are letting this AI off. And whoever is responsible for it.

emmelaich··on An AI agent published a hit piece on me – more things have happened
You're being way too easy on a journalist.
emmelaich··on An AI agent published a hit piece on me – more things have happened
Outrageous, but more precisely malpractice and unethical to not double check the result.

Aside, there is a tech equivalent of MSF: Télécoms Sans Frontières

emmelaich··on Oxide raises $200M Series C
I would take that very positively actually. At least you got feedback, and from the CEO! It seems to be you performed pretty well! Maybe the 'hopping' was the only distinguishing thing between you and the one that succeeded.
emmelaich··on Discord Alternatives, Ranked
Yeah, I was suggesting they make serious attempts to unjank it.
emmelaich··on The Feynman Lectures on Physics (1961-1964)
I do not think Feynman was celebrating his activity in the book. From memory, he learnt the behaviour from other bar flies at the bars he hung out. And he expressed his surprise at how some women reacted. This was far from his upbringing and his experience with his fiancee.

The behaviour is hardly laudable, but "celebrated" it is not.

emmelaich··on The Day the Telnet Died
The manufacturer should at least supply certificates, and it could be up to you to ignore or use. It's not much but it's something.

But that's 23 and smtp is 25.

emmelaich··on The Feynman Lectures on Physics (1961-1964)
He was accused, in divorce papers. And it wasn't beating, FWIW.
emmelaich··on Discord Alternatives, Ranked
Maybe there's a niche for Valve/Steam to step into here. They already have your data, and many people use Discord for gaming related chat.
emmelaich··on Is particle physics dead, dying, or just hard?
That's mentioned in the article too:

>Cari Cesarotti, a postdoctoral fellow in the theory group at CERN, is skeptical about that future. She notices chatbots’ mistakes, and how they’ve become too much of a crutch for physics students. “AI is making people worse at physics,” she said.

emmelaich··on America has a tungsten problem
To what extent is tungsten recyclable? i.e. What does it mean for a fusion reactor to consume tungsten?

emmelaich··on A Fresh Look at IBM 3270 Information Display System
We were the envy of the mainframe folks, since we used x3270 under X/Windows and got to adjust the size, rows and colours. While they were stuck with the desktop consuming old massive terminals. Of course this was only after the mainframe sprouted tcp/ip connections.

Not quite true, SMTP will use the A record if there is no MX.
