I'm a beardless unix greybeard who loves dabbling in new computer languages.

I'm also fascinated in the psychology of belief.

Philosophically a skeptic, but I don't attend their services :-)

emmelaich··on Charcuterie – Visual similarity Unicode explorer
The title of the page is "Charcuterie — A Visual Unicode Explorer" so a search would bring it up. [edit - tested in a incognito page]

Some targets are more valuable than others. A firewall product has obvious security value. The fact that it requires high privilege is another reason.

I have the same thoughts about other Mac apps. e.g. iTerm2 - cause they "see" so much sensitive data.

Just saying developers have been hacked. Underrated existence proof.

Their copy of the compiler. Just an example. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

emmelaich··on Who is Satoshi Nakamoto? My quest to unmask Bitcoin's creator
Yep, As fans of Larson's The Far Side, probably every American and Americo-phile computer geek and cypherpunk used 'dang'

Same goes for the rest of your list.

?! The same way every other developer that has been hacked. You surely cannot be suggesting you're un-hackable. That seems ludicrously hubristic.

They don't build their own machines or write their compilers or write their own crpyto code or ... so many other things.
emmelaich··on They're made out of meat (1991)
It's partly for dramatic purposes, to slow the realisation of the audience that they are aliens talking about people.

And, ofc, in-drama logic; the beings (of silicon or whatever) are/were blending in with humans to study them.

Same, I thought the newberries were going to be some sort of intelligence enhancer.
emmelaich··on LittleSnitch for Linux
Yep, I trust the obdev.at / Snitch guys.

I do wonder however, are they sufficiently careful about their processes and own machines to avoid a supply chain attack completely.

They must be a target for the various hacking groups out there.

Here you are. https://github.com/google/grumpy

Last commit was 9 years ago though, so targets Python 2.7.

Great game. I was hoping for a webgl/wasm version but oh well.

emmelaich··on Turning a MacBook into a touchscreen with $1 of hardware (2018)
Sometimes I feel the urge to do some art, and the bigger surface might allow that. Perhaps in lieu, make a bigger trackpad.
emmelaich··on Alzheimer's disease mortality among taxi and ambulance drivers (2024)
Maybe them too, to some extent. Have they been studied?
emmelaich··on Alzheimer's disease mortality among taxi and ambulance drivers (2024)
What are some possibilities?

    1. Those with spatial reasoning are less likely to develop Alzheimers
    2. Ambo and Taxi drivers are less likely (for some reason) to develop Alzheimers AND their work leads them to develop good spatial reasoning.
Any others? One consideration is that those with jobs requiring long periods of concentration drink less. Among other things.

It makes me sad for all the human creativity and artistry repressed in Albania and other countries.

Maybe introduce .bk (Balkans) then anyone around there can use it.

Gal.
emmelaich··on Why so many control rooms were seafoam green (2025)
Yes, a feature of the movie "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest" is a sort of sickly green.

I think hospitals have moved entirely away from green, probably because of its association with industry and asylum use.

emmelaich··on DOOM Over DNS
You could write some custom backends for https://irmin.org/ I guess.

> Irmin is an OCaml library for building mergeable, branchable distributed data stores.

emmelaich··on DOOM Over DNS
Not cache-able if no one has seen them before.
emmelaich··on DOOM Over DNS
A popular use of DNS is for malware to communicate their status. They do this by requesting e.g. "i_am_in_$RANDOM_NUMBER".badplace.ru.cn.cx.
