I'm a beardless unix greybeard who loves dabbling in new computer languages.

I'm also fascinated in the psychology of belief.

Philosophically a skeptic, but I don't attend their services :-)

emmelaich··on I scanned all of GitHub's "oops commits" for leaked secrets
I guess it's possible to delete these forever as by deleting the entire repo and re uploading. As long as there are no forks.

emmelaich··on Melbourne man discovers extensive model train network underneath house
Home inspectors (at least in Australia) are next to useless and expensive. The one I bought a report from never looked under the house or in the attic.

Parents may have been affected by lead as well.
emmelaich··on The Jumping Frenchmen of Maine
If you've seen fellow workers being attacked by bears or smashed by falling trees you'd be pretty jumpy too. Abrupt noise after hours of near silence, followed by trauma.
emmelaich··on Mapping LLMs over excel saved my passion for game dev
I'm happy they're cautious with spreadsheets. Wrong numbers can really mess up people's lives.

That said, I saw an add for Gemini for Google Sheets today.

emmelaich··on I wrote my PhD Thesis in Typst
There are add-ons for Gdocs. This is apparently pretty good. https://workspace.google.com/marketplace/app/autolatex_equat...

Same on Android.
emmelaich··on The JAWS shark is public domain
Sheaths also sheath swords.

Relatedly, the slang (or 'real') word for penis is/was weapon in old English.

emmelaich··on The JAWS shark is public domain
Was Mary Steenburgen in Back To The Future? Oh, never mind you mean BTTF3.
emmelaich··on The Matrix (1999) Filming Locations – Shot-for-Shot – Sydney, Australia [video]
Fullerton Hotel (the deja vu staircase) was Sydney's General Post Office. It underwent renovation which took years, at a guess around the time the movie was filmed.
emmelaich··on Using `make` to compile C programs
Maybe it's upcoming, but Julia should mention `pkgconfig` to get the various options for compiling.
emmelaich··on Endometriosis is an interesting disease
Considering the magic of birth and the war in the womb[0] it's amazing that the reproductive system works as well as it does.

Pregnancy relieves the symptoms but is not a cure. But surely you'd have to consider lower fertility has something to do with the increase in endometriosis.

A 'ricer' is a small Japanese sports car (e.g. Subaru WRX or Mitsubishi Evo) souped up or given fancy paint job and spoilers etc). Rice for the country of origin.
emmelaich··on Containerization is a Swift package for running Linux containers on macOS
update: torch for Linux on ARM isn't built with Apple's MPS support so it didn't work with the pip install version. Perhaps it's possible to compile from scratch to have it.

I've used pytorch successfully in a MacOS VM on MacOS using https://tart.run/ so I'd expect it to work here too.
emmelaich··on The wire that transforms much of Manhattan into one big, symbolic home (2017)
There are hotels and apartment blocks that have physical locks as well as the swipe card. So you can use the physical key on the Sabbath.
emmelaich··on The wire that transforms much of Manhattan into one big, symbolic home (2017)
The St. Ives eruv definitely has their own wire, though it very difficult to discern unless you know exactly where it runs already.

I'd assume the Bondi one also, because I suspect it's not really valid unless continuous and monitored, per the article. Although I'm no expert.

emmelaich··on The wire that transforms much of Manhattan into one big, symbolic home (2017)
There's at least two in Sydney. One near Bondi and one around St Ives. The one around St Ives was a little controversial but the council eventually permitted it.
emmelaich··on Panjandrum: The ‘giant firework’ built to break Hitler's Atlantic Wall

A Town Like Alice is probably the most popular in Australia, where he resided after the war. Also made into a good movie.

emmelaich··on I do not remember my life and it's fine
I'd love to see a study of correlations between aphantasia and other properties of the mind.

   1. schizophrenia? (blind people never seem to be schizophrenic)
   2. artistic skill
   3. alzheimers and dementia
   4. empathy - the ability to see yourself in other's shoes
emmelaich··on Flight Simulator Gave Birth to 3D Video-Game Graphics
The article says 3-6.
emmelaich··on Flight Simulator Gave Birth to 3D Video-Game Graphics
Pity they don't show the even older graphics on TRS-80.

Delight in the 128x48 monochrome display, max 6 fps.

The basic layout (airfields, mountains) you see in the article was kept for a few iterations even after MS bought them.

emmelaich··on Ask HN: What is the best LLM for consumer grade hardware?
Generally speaking, how can you tell how much vram a model will take? It seems to be a valuable bit of data which is missing from downloadable models (gguf) files.
emmelaich··on FLUX.1 Kontext
I tried making a realistic image from a cartoon character but aged. It did very well, definitely recognisable as the same 'person'.
emmelaich··on Tesla FSD doesn't stop for school buses with stop signs and red lights
I'd like to see the same test with other self-drive cars, e.g. Waymo.
emmelaich··on BGP handling bug causes widespread internet routing instability
But that's what I'm saying; Postel may well have ALSO rejected malformed inputs in this particular case.
emmelaich··on BGP handling bug causes widespread internet routing instability
You're not accounting for the incorrectly rejected file / protocols. And incomplete protocol specifications.

And generally I think critics of Postel are lacking the context in which they were made. You and probably others would actually make similar decisions than Postel for many particular issues.
