I'm a beardless unix greybeard who loves dabbling in new computer languages.

I'm also fascinated in the psychology of belief.

Philosophically a skeptic, but I don't attend their services :-)

emmelaich··on How to Secure a Linux Server
Should touch and chmod files (.msmtprc and /etc/exim4/passwd.client) BEFORE adding sensitive content to them.

There might be other instances in the how-to, I didn't read it all.

emmelaich··on Fixing Ctrl+C in Rust terminal apps: Child process management
I believe @stonogo is saying Rust code is specific to Rust.
emmelaich··on The Math Is Haunted
Thanks! That makes sense.
emmelaich··on The Math Is Haunted
It was interesting to me as it didn't fit my expectations. As a math theory ignoramus, I expected that reflection and rewrite are more fundamental than addition. But Lean seems to assume addition but require explicit rfl and rewrite.

Perhaps there's a Lean "prelude" that does it for you.

emmelaich··on Fast
Working with a task scheduling system, we were told that every minute a airplane is delayed costs $10k. This was back in the 90s, so adjust accordingly.
emmelaich··on Fast
Very nice. Also a plea. Don't animate the >. Or, don't wait for the animation to finish before showing the contents.

A ticket booking system I was familiar with added latency after upgrades to maintain a particular experience for the operators.

I guess they were used to typing stuff then inspecting paperwork or other stuff waiting for a response. Plus, it avoided complaints when usage inevitably increased over time.

emmelaich··on Fast
Really not sure about that. People will give up features for speed all the time. See git vs bzr/hg/svn/darcs/monotone,...
emmelaich··on Early universe's 'little red dots' may be black hole stars
Agree, but it's probably covered by Quanta magazine, Ars Technica, plus 3b1b, veritasium, vsauce, etc.
emmelaich··on Ollama's new app
Native webview? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
emmelaich··on Elements of System Design
FWIW, there are other styles which emphasise other aspects. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Types_of_periodic_tables
emmelaich··on URL-Driven State in HTMX
Another reminder of Programming inside the URL String. https://apenwarr.ca/log/20121218
emmelaich··on Linux Performance Analysis (2015)
Nice list. sar/sysstat is underrated imho.
emmelaich··on Why concatenative programming matters (2012)
The odd thing is that RPN is actually pretty intuitive for people. It's the "language" of cash registers! I had never used cash registers, and I lent my HP rpn calculator to my girlfriend to use. I said it's a bit weird, do you need help.

She gave me the dirtiest "are you mansplaining me" look.

Using the HP was perfectly natural for her as she had used cash registers.

emmelaich··on SQL Injection as a Feature
That exists as @apenwarr's afterquery: https://apenwarr.ca/log/20121218

As it is the URL string, you can share it easily.

emmelaich··on “Dynamic programming” is not referring to “computer programming”
It's deliberately obscure. Per the article it's for promotion not description.
emmelaich··on JOVE – Jonathan’s Own Version of Emacs
>I have screen snapshots of his awful Facebook messages, if anyone wants to see Jonathan Payne's entire vile hate speech diatribe

Please do.

emmelaich··on Making a StringBuffer in C, and questioning my sanity
I remember reading (decades ago) an extensive article in Software Practice and Experience reaching the same conclusion.
emmelaich··on Sage: An atomic bomb kicked off the biggest computing project in history
The Computer History Museum in Mountain View has good exhibit on this. The sheer scale of the project was incredible. And rendered obsolete in a few years by the advent of ICBMs.

Pretty cool seeing that the consoles had a place for your cigarette.

emmelaich··on Signs of autism could be encoded in the way you walk
I'm pretty sure you're right. There are a vast number of correlations waiting to be discovered. Were just waiting on sufficient data.
emmelaich··on Signs of autism could be encoded in the way you walk
I knew of a young toe walker who turned out to have tendon problems and got surgery to have it fixed. For a while her parents thought she wanted to do ballet.
emmelaich··on Reading Neuromancer for the first time in 2025
I really hope they do it well. Some of the things that were new in Neuromancer are tropes these days. e.g. the payphone ringing, in the Matrix and more relevantly in Person of Interest.

It's going to be very hard to navigate between faithfulness to the book and still have it feel fresh.

That and inherent difficulty of taking Gibson's prose to the screen. Maybe it will be by voiceover.

emmelaich··on Preliminary report into Air India crash released
At least an audible alert.
emmelaich··on Preliminary report into Air India crash released
On a Tesla (and presumably other cars) opening the door engages Park.

There's no handbrake to pull, and turning the wheel so hard to lose control is next to impossible. Maybe on an oily wet or loose surface.

emmelaich··on Lead pigment in turmeric is the culprit in a global poisoning mystery (2024)
Reminds me of the Henna problem. People think / expect Henna to be darker than it is so in some countries they added paraphenylenediamine to it.

Paraphenylenediamine is toxic!

emmelaich··on Breaking Git with a carriage return and cloning RCE
> As Mark Crispin said then, the interpretations that people put on it are not what M. Postel would have agreed with.

Absolutely, in particular the "Be conservative in what you do" would have prevented this bug.

emmelaich··on What a Hacker Stole from Me
It's just possible that someone at some big AI company just pressed a button to add this to their collection of training material. And lazily or otherwise just hit the checkboxes for 'repeat' and 'forever'.
emmelaich··on Writing a Game Boy Emulator in OCaml (2022)
I've heard Haskell described as the best imperative language.
emmelaich··on A Higgs-Bugson in the Linux Kernel
Kerberos is 'fun'. I had to manage a system which used Kerberos to provide authentication between a Rubik's cube of various Windows flavours with various crypto standards, Linux machines of various versions and Java versions and apps of various maturity. It was an ever present source of weird behaviour and I had to bury myself in the innards of all these systems.

I know, not directly related to the article. Just needed to vent bitterly.

emmelaich··on I scanned all of GitHub's "oops commits" for leaked secrets
One good (and obviously bad) thing about Subversion was the ability to change history. As admin I was asked numerous times to change a commit message. To point to the correct Jira issue, for instance.

Also easier to enforce pre-commit, since it was done server side.
