emj··on 46% of Americans didn't read a book in 2023
> Is x,y,z worse than reading books? [..] People fetishise them.

If you chose not to read books yes it is worse. There are many books you can read that will give you a massive amount of information about a subject, not only hard facts but soft philosophical issues. I've experienced The Trail by Kafka as radio/play/movie/book, it is amazingly good as a book.

I do not care if you do not think the same or if you can not experience the same thing as I can when I read books. I do not want you to deprive others of that feeling though.

emj··on Figure out who's leaving the company: dump, diff, repeat
Of course we fire people in Sweden pay them and revoke their access, this is very uncommon I have only seen it once myself. Would like to note that, simply speaking, the rules change the more responsibility you have.
emj··on Figure out who's leaving the company: dump, diff, repeat
Top search result is from Gartner: alarm bells ringing. Data loss prevention seems to be enterprise speak for doing as much intrusive monitoring you can do, in as neutral speak as possible.

1984 is so appealing for so many people, it seems like it is just a book about the tendencies that power can take when it is not guided by sane principles. I have always been employed in a high trust capacity since I was a young adult, there is not a technically feasible system in the world that could prevent me from wrecking havoc in a company. Social ones though, they are extremely effective.

emj··on Latest ChatGPT 4 System prompt (1,700 tokens)
I did this with free ChatGPT does not handle it gracefully. This was a really interesting test case, I've always thought the free version was good at doing stuff like that. I guess I was blind and not inspecting it with enough objectivity. The results does not represent reality at all. When asked to create fake lists they are too homogenic, it gets stuck in a loop of sameness and has a hard time understanding that there is a female and a male team.

I used; "There are two soccer teams competing in the Olympics for Sweden, could you generate the starting eleven for each of them. You are free to make up names" The real answer for women should be: Hedvig Lindahl, Hanna Glas, Amanda Ilestedt, Nathalie Björn, Magdalena Eriksson, Filippa Angeldahl, Kosovare Asllani, Caroline Seger, Sofia Jakobsson, Stina Blackstenius, Fridolina Rolfö. The results from ChatGPT was a list of basically "Anderson"s.

emj··on How Quora died
So climate change, is it surprising the thread went bonkers? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Susan_J._Crockford

What ever I answer in this case the easiest reaction will be; for you will be to judge me and lump me together with what you cal activists, and for those activists it will me easiest to put me in the same conspiracy theorist group as you. This is not a problem with Wikipedia, this is a human problem.

While I also think that article is abysmal, it does give context what to expect from people posting stuff by her. The biggest problem with your complaint is that you are not linking to an alternative, just do a fast draft on Wikipedia remove everything that you feel is not relevant and link that. Sure it will be reverted but that is probably because you first draft will not be a good article, those are evidently very hard to write when people think so differently about something.

emj··on Ask HN: How can I back up an old vBulletin forum without admin access?
Depends on where the data is stored, if the owner of the domain lives in the EU or a similar jurisdiction the data will be under Database rights for 15 years. There is no such thing as community owned. Each post might be owned by the person who posted it but often that is not the case.

EDIT: so of course you should dump the data, wget -r and dump it.

emj··on Estonian Song Festival
I warmly recommended to start singing in choirs as a novice, there are at least a few good choirs that cater to beginners, at least in Sweden. Of course there are many more really good choirs.

I am not a singer at all, but singing in a choir is really fun.

emj··on "Climate sensitivity to CO2 possibly higher than assumed" by Sabine Hossenfelder [video]
Using climate models for weather forecast is ingenious. Really interesting paper.
emj··on Heat exchanger masks for cold weather cycling (2019)
I have never felt it, so what do you mean by extremes? I do not think a daily commute for 50 minutes in -15°C at ~25km/h on a bicycle is extreme. I never feel affected. I also go Nordic sking in -30°C for hours I have never been affected. The sun with snow blindness is not fun though never doing that mistake again.
emj··on Retired teacher's pension stopped as provider refuses to believe she is not dead
> Hopefully they fired the moron

As you say things happens, so who are you going to fire? It mostly is just a bad coincidences that make these things happens, it mostly is not the guy committing the error who is at fault. I do not want to live in a society where you treat the administrative clerks like you imply.

emj··on Electric Car Owners Confront a Harsh Foe: Cold Weather
The magic of water in clay makes objects cold, like the Olla pots for water or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pot-in-pot_refrigerator

I have no clay cars sadly, not sure how ordinary cars handle wind chill.

emj··on Norwegian: Bokmål vs. Nynorsk
"The danish lanuage has collapsed" i.e. Kameloso is a foux shibboleth among my friends. I envy the danes they have a great shibboleth since no one can understand nor pronounce it anything of it.
emj··on Norwegian: Bokmål vs. Nynorsk
Education seems a bit more flexible in Sweden, i.e. I failed my third modern language but still managed to get in to uni by taking other courses. Over all I think you describe the tribulations of us all even if we manage to do all the hoops through uni. I worked during high school and military service, but looking back I was not really ready for it.
emj··on OsmAPP – A Universal OpenStreetMap App
You are missing the point. If you do this commercially and have that need, you usually have a separate geocoding. This data can not be combined with OSM unless it is already freely available. The point is that the data in OSM is freely useable in what ever way you want to as long as you publish the data used to create your maps.

There are no available map data that allow this except Openstreetmap.

emj··on Ghidra 11.0 Released
It has BSIM that can fuzzy-find what libraries are statically compiled, so you know what version of a library that might be compiled in and if there are changes to it. Interesting that it is not only local but you can use an elastic search for that, I am guessing NSA has a pretty big elastic cluster with just binaries of libraries.
emj··on Microsoft forced people to install their browser (2010)
That mindset made it impossible to upgrade from IE6, if you kept away from a dynamic front end it was a bit easier. That said the current landscape is worse, the javascript tooling can make old apps impossible to improve upon just 5 years after release unless you have continuously worked on it.
emj··on Tesla sues Swedish state agency over number plate blockage
Lots of people work together and vote in their local unions, that then is taken into account when the the terms of a collective agreement is negotiated. That seems like the definition of democracy.
emj··on Tesla sues Swedish state agency over number plate blockage
Well it is an ideological battle by a US company acting in an work environment very much unlike what the US has. I do hope the unions manage to keep this going for a year or two.
emj··on Agricultural input shocks affect crop yields more in the high-yielding areas
> caring for the environment should be a black and white resolution

I've been thinking on that since I was a wee lad. The best tools are impossible to find, it is hard to explain why we shouldn't to X any more since we now know that Y is the better tool and X makes Y impossible. I still think we should try X and Y, it's just a really hard communication issue. It is not helped by using ambivalent words like "the environment".

Skimmed the paper you cite and it mentions that it is hard to talk about this since flame wars make people very careful.

emj··on Stop using JSON Web Tokens for user sessions
> > ...utilize JSON Web tokens (JWTs) for session handling instead of cookies.

I read that as JWTs in a cookie as a replacement for session cookies with data stored on a server. There are nice things about that, but with a fail safe logout mechanism via server side revocation lists JWTs are not that stateless anymore.

EDIT: I do agree that the article misses the point a bit, but I also agree with the article that sessions cookies are wonderful and you almost always should use that instead. It all depends on your environment. One thing I can say: never use Active Directory as a token server the amount of glue you need is insane.

There is more; the government has a vested interest in your whole family and friends, they are all affected if you die. They are just liabilities if you buy an insurance.
emj··on Swedish painters trade union to stop all work with Tesla brand cars
Sweden Democrats will get more votes next election, they have no responsibilities yet, so can take no blame this term.
emj··on Gang crisis shaking Sweden
My first hand anecdotes; we let our kids ride subways on their own in Stockholm from about 9 years old. Everyone I know use public transport, I have never heard anyone complain about this!

Subways are safe. EDIT: I am sure there are problems I am not saying it is perfect

emj··on Gang crisis shaking Sweden
I live in an area where there has been gang related gun violence and bombings; there are no neighborhoods around here where I feel unsafe. No one is ignoring it but sadly the current affairs are being used as a political tool to remove freedoms and further far right agendas. I do not know where you are from but lets say; Romania they have done an amazing job the last 30 years their homicide rate per capita has at times managed to drop below our current levels.

The high standard means that there is actually still a functioning society there with stability, security and trust in police and government. While we do have problems with the money generated from drug trade and other crimes.

It's 30s every two minutes.
emj··on Why do people still use VBA?
Well I agree that excel is a superb interface for many things and it helps people to understand data, to a certain degree. On the flip side; they are accustomed to the data model and when things get a bit complicated they tend to not ask questions, perhaps blaming themselves. There are things like this 3GB Excel/VBA pension forecast model from Sweden, with an 38 page user manual as well. Which does not really use Excel that well: https://www.pensionsmyndigheten.se/statistik-och-rapporter/p...
emj··on Building an occupancy sensor with a $5 ESP32 and a serverless DB
There are some nice images of the ESP32 die here https://zeptobars.com/en/read/Espressif-ESP32-Wi-Fi-Bluetoot... and yes does not look like a multi die chip.
emj··on Why aren't collaborative mapping and local history sites popular in Anglosphere?
Sorry my implicit answer was that you got all the nerds into Openstreetmap and Wikipedia, so the critical mass was not there for other stuff. Wikimapia just got a bad rep, and there really wasn't room for other services when Wikimapia did what it did good.

I mean looking at the Wikimapia for Stockholm you get the feeling it is a Russian map for the next step after managing to obliterate Ukraine. Not something mapped by locals caring about the city.
