emirozer··on After over a decade of Vim, I’m hooked on Emacs
Never understood the emacs pinky thing to be honest. From like week 1, years ago, i realized i have to have the C- modifier in a better place.. You just remap caps-lock to ctrl and you are done.
emirozer··on Do you need a blockchain?
Sorry but this is a bit dumb. If you say YES to this question: "Can you use an always online trusted third party?" Regardless of your other answers, it always says NO as a result.

Can someone give me an example of an always online trusted third party, and also let me know that how can you see into the future so that this third party keeps its guarantees throughout life?

Edit: flagging this post as it seems like a troll attempt to me

emirozer··on Show HN: CakeResume – Drag and drop resume snippets to build a unique resume
Bit of a misunderstanding here, I was referring to LinkedIn's feature of Export Profile as PDF
emirozer··on Show HN: CakeResume – Drag and drop resume snippets to build a unique resume
I don't really get the reasoning behind the downvotes. Still on topic enough to have a discussion about. Someone care to elaborate ?
emirozer··on Show HN: CakeResume – Drag and drop resume snippets to build a unique resume
Looks nice but gonna be a bit off topic and ranty, I really don't want to bother about resumes and their formats anymore. Is it really not acceptable to give a LinkedIn URL when asked for a resume, or as a recruiter if you see my LinkedIn profile, why do you still ask a resume? I think it looks well enough to replace any resume in any format, and its generally available. (of course if you don't choose to limit it to only 1st level connections)

Farsighted Note: I am aware of PDF export feature, but its very ugly..

emirozer··on Show HN: GitPlex – A new Git repo management server with code review
This is very impressive, well done!
emirozer··on F– you startup world
I had a naive assumption that if I post something that has been submitted before, it would auto upvote the last recently submitted topic...

On the other hand, does it really matter how many times something is reposted, as long as it gets upvotes? It naturally means that people are interested in it.

emirozer··on Show HN: GUI for writing Elasticsearch queries
I guess its a tad bit late ?

https://github.com/elastic/sense

EDIT: I watched the complete demo, seems more smart than sense. (in terms of query building)

emirozer··on Show HN: Turn a markdown document into an interactive tutorial
It is quite obvious that its a joke, with the fork bomb and the response...
emirozer··on Etcd v3: increased scale and new APIs
It's based on Raft : https://github.com/coreos/etcd/tree/master/raft

emirozer··on Jepsen: Crate 0.54.9 version divergence
I try and find engineers whose job is to run that distributed datastore in production with a scale similar to my case. Chances are really high that even in a related IRC one can find someone for any database. And just ask for their experiences.
emirozer··on Tell HN: Apply HN apology and revision
I actually really like this outcome of 20k going to charity :)
emirozer··on A Protocol for Dying
Thank you for the info! But I also think that this will not get a lot of coverage, if I need to learn this address from a comment in HN.. Hope it does somehow..
emirozer··on A Protocol for Dying
Pieter, in the article you wrote "Think of the Children" and wanted readers to write stories, which is a really nice idea.. How about we think of the children and donate some money? Is it possible to share a donation address/endpoint ?
emirozer··on Show HN: Turned Facebook Messenger into a JavaScript REPL
Cool idea! But man, Gary Bernhardt's WAT talk, even though i saw it at least 10 times, still cracks me up...
emirozer··on Show HN: I made an interactive Bootstrap 4 cheat sheet
As a person who doesn't understand a single thing about front-end, I really appreciate the existence of bootstrap, especially when I need to just put an OK looking dashboard together...

PS: for the sake of sharing http://bootswatch.com/

emirozer··on Tech workers are increasingly looking to leave Silicon Valley
i am sorry but this is a very elitist comment, please consider all the successful startups that are born outside of Bay Area/US and really smart people who work on them...
emirozer··on Sheryl Sandberg Says an MBA Doesn't Matter in Tech
I think its pretty clear, the time invested in a mba degree is quite enough to really improve or learn new technical skills.
emirozer··on Distributed locks with Redis
I have always felt like distributed locks are a flimsy design but will take a good look at this implementation.
emirozer··on Exposq: mini Go app for dispatching osquery to multiple machines
Author here, if you have a chance i would strongly urge you to check out this project from facebook. (in case you missed it)

emirozer··on The Humble Programmer
Dutch directness has a side effect of coming across as arrogant, its merely a difference in culture[0].

For example, if you are Dutch and your friends are Dutch, you don't go on and ask "how are you?" to the people that aren't close to you.

The question "how are you?" is actually there for you to show genuine interest in someone else's life at that moment. The polar opposite of it is the US version i guess, where a "how are you?" results almost always with a "fine and you?".

On another note, i think the main reason(i might be very wrong here) that they had this clash is Alan Kay being a pioneer in object oriented programming. And Dijkstra's counter-discourses against it and sometimes those discourses were harsh[1]. (Although we can agree oop is garbage :D, that is certainly not the best way to put it.)

[0]: Although i have met some Dutch people that were being rude and trying to cover it with "Directness"

emirozer··on Newegg vs. Patent Trolls: When We Win, You Win
Please excuse my ignorance on this topic.

- Why is this happening in the first place?

- Who is this entity that grants a loose patent?

- Why isn't this entity being interrogated ?

emirozer··on What happens when you talk about salaries at Google
Wouldn't it be better to __try__ to create a global movement within the industry for employees to feed accurate data to glassdoor?

Sidenote: Most of the people around here knows glassdoor but i have worked with a lot of people who never heard of it..

emirozer··on Zeplin (YC S15) launches to improve designer and developer collaboration
Worked with them before, really nice bunch of people and a cool project that solves a true pain point.

Best of luck!

emirozer··on To Lose Weight, Eating Less Is Far More Important Than Exercising More
No, the focus should be eating the right amount of healthy food.
emirozer··on Android Migration
Is there any reason for google to allow this in their play store ? Serious question here, i cannot think of apple allowing the same kind of an app for google in app store...
emirozer··on The tech arms race in AAA games and why I'm abandoning it
I guess yes there is some nostalgia involved, btw i removed it, its just that i feel disrespectful whenever a list like that doesn't include doom
emirozer··on The tech arms race in AAA games and why I'm abandoning it
I see your point and it makes sense but won't you agree a story line or a rich description of game play won't make the same or perhaps a better impact on the potential buyer ?

Of course i am assuming there is a story line or nice gameplay..

To give an example: my favorite game of all times, Ultima Online has at __best__, __meh__ graphics..I remember i got hooked before i even installed it, not because of the screen shots but the way the game magazine editor was telling his own experience how he got murdered while fishing quietly in a small town..

emirozer··on The tech arms race in AAA games and why I'm abandoning it
Look these games at best can be __good__..

But lets talk about Legendary ones: might & magic series, planescape torment, baldur's gate, day of the tentacle, neverwinter nights, monkey island series, ultima online, warcraft 1, starcraft 1, diablo 1, heroes of mm & Ultima 1/2/3 etc...

The games you are listing can be highly rated, but they will not be remembered..
