emilioolivares··on Show HN: See a Satellite Tonight. No Telescope Required
For whoever built this app: I was checking HN in bed. I clicked your app and noticed the ISS would be passing overhead in less than a minute. My reaction was to immediately jump up, yell at my kids to run with me outside. We didn't know where to look, but then I figured out how to load the streetview and saw that it would be closer to the horizon and BOOM. We finally saw it zooming across the night sky, everybody started to cheer and yell. It was the most amazing thing we've done all week :).
emilioolivares··on Ask HN: Sideprojects/passive income businesses with little or no own coding?
If you want passive income with no work, then you have to supply capital. If you don't have capital, then work is required. Unfortunately there are no passive income businesses that require zero capital and zero work. They just don't exist.

Passive no-coding ways to make money: >Public market investments: stock market, ETF's, bonds, derivatives, commodities, real estate, bitcoin >Non-public investments: start-ups, business ventures, hedge funds, private equity, etc.

There are other businesses which people think are passive but they are not. Having a website that makes money is not a passive income. Ask anyone that has one, they have to put in some sort of work. If they don't the money dries up. You have to create new content and really target your ads to actually make money.

Good luck!

Candyjapan is definitely a business supported by a lot of custom code. Read this: https://www.candyjapan.com/behind-the-scenes/how-many-lines-...
emilioolivares··on Show HN: Flipmeme – Reddit and Imgur image viewer
I built Flipmeme a while back. Finally got around to a re-design. It's been a really great side project. Been hovering around 250k uniques for while.

List view is also cool! http://flipmeme.com/listview/frontpage

My stack: Django, Python, Jquery mobile

emilioolivares··on DevDocs API Documentation
I was curious to see how it was able to run so snappy. It actually feels like the help section for a native app. I found the source code: https://github.com/Thibaut/devdocs It's not really using a client side framework and runs Sinatra on the back end. I will definitely dig more into how it all works.

Thanks for sharing!!

emilioolivares··on Sorting Visualizations
Oh, this, this is a great idea. Do it!
emilioolivares··on HTML5 Version of the Tron:Legacy Boardroom Scene
What, the .js file for the globe itself is 43 thousand lines of code. Was this a weekend project? How do you find the time? Very well done my friend. (https://github.com/arscan/encom-globe/blob/master/build/enco...)
emilioolivares··on MapSCII – Braille and ASCII map renderer for the console
I completely agree this is awesome. Would be very interested in a detailed write up of every detail behind this project. In the meantime, you can just ride into the sunset knowing you've provided someone with their daily inspiration.
emilioolivares··on OpenLara – Web-based classic Tomb Raider engine remake
Wow, I played this game when I was a kid. Can't believe it's just running inside the browser. Great job.
emilioolivares··on Pixels Don’t Care (2013)
Pixels don't care, but businesses care a lot about who their vendors are. Specifically, business owners want to buy from companies that can provide more than a result.

They need to mitigate business risk so they look for vendors that will: 1. Exist as long as their solution is being used 2. Provide adequate support 3. Are legally accountable for their products and services 4. Have the proper processes in place for things like billing and invoices

Having raw talent is just part of the business puzzle. There are a lot of start-ups or freelancers that can "fake it until they make it" but it's because they really understand how a small business or corporation makes buying decisions.

emilioolivares··on Global Infrastructure Partners Gets Big Returns In Sleepy Sector
The real story here is capital in the form of private equity. Engineering is a commodity, it can be bought, there are tons of great engineers in the world. Getting access to capital to take these big bets requires some serious clout, influence, and connections that the average joe doesn't have. Check out the background of ANY private equity firm, it's full of very wealthy people from Ivy League schools (Skull & Bones anyone?).

These guys create a firm, pitch their friends to get a seed fund off the ground and then start fundraising from larger institutions. They then hire some real talent and they are off to the races. Not everyone makes it, but the ones who do are featured as geniuses on Bloomberg and the Wall Street Journal. Survivorship bias for sure. Most Hedge Funds and Private Equity firms don't do well, similar to any start-up.

emilioolivares··on Seeking partner for side project
Thanks so much. Do you have a MVP that is on the web that we can see?
emilioolivares··on Seeking partner for side project
Thank you! It's very hard to monetize this at this point. The traffic is too low. I would rather focus on growing it first before I start to think about monetization.
emilioolivares··on Seeking partner for side project
Wow, very nice site. Thank you yes, what do I need to do to apply?

Hello Joe, I'm actually just using the names of the images off of Imgur. There is a discussion on reddit of how this is done, you can find it here: https://www.reddit.com/r/learnprogramming/comments/2yv4kq/al...
emilioolivares··on Practice coding with fun programming challenges
This is excellent! Thanks for building this. The onboarding is awesome, I was compelled to sign up after the walkthrough.
emilioolivares··on Ask HN: Do you have a profitable side project? How long did it take to achieve?
Hey man, I'm also from Mexico but currently live in NY. This is pretty awesome. How did you manage to get traction with small businesses? Would love to chat if you have time, my email is emilioolivares, I use Google email.
emilioolivares··on Ask HN: Open problems in finance?
Agree 100%. Good data is very expensive and even then many times needs additional cleaning. Public data sources are for the most part unusable.
emilioolivares··on Ask HN: Open problems in finance?
#1 I don't think there is a perfect measure. In practice portfolio managers use multiple views of risk, including multi-factor risk models, stress testing, value at risk, etc. Any tool money can buy they will use.

#2 has already been solved: One formulation is here: https://stanford.edu/~boyd/papers/pdf/dyn_port_opt.pdf There are optimizers out there already on the market with these capabilities.

emilioolivares··on Voxel Quest January 2016 Update
The success of Minecraft comes from the ability to create. If you can capture that magic into Voxelquest I can see this being huge. I would love a game where I could create my terrain, set-up my army (like I would my toys) and then let them fight and be able to record and share the videos of the action. Wish you the best!
emilioolivares··on Ask HN: New attempt at mobile markup – keep or bail?
Agree, I'm getting the same thing on an Iphone 5s. But much better than before!
emilioolivares··on Introducing the Famous Framework
Ha, this was exactly my thought process when I was reading!
emilioolivares··on Ask HN: My free app has gone slighty viral – looking for ideas to monetize it
It's against Imgur's terms of service. You can't show ad's and direct link to their images. Any other ideas :).
emilioolivares··on Ask HN: My free app has gone slighty viral – looking for ideas to monetize it
This kind of happened to me. I've tried building serious apps with limited success and traction. I'm a huge reddit/imgur fan so a built a hobby site for myself using reddit's api to browse through their images: http://www.flipmeme.com. Currently gets 100k uniques per month, can't monetize!!! In other words, the stuff you really work on doesn't get anywhere, random stuff you build as a joke suddenly takes off?!
emilioolivares··on Ask HN: How to get lots of spam, fast?
Sign up for every retail coupon/rewards program. My wife does this, gets 50+ spam emails per day.
emilioolivares··on Show HN: Askmee
Nice interface, really like the design. That being said there is no content, this will be very hard to get off the ground. You need to get very creative to kick-start this a make it a valuable alternative to Reddit.

Some ideas: 1. Focus on a niche; Reddit is the king of general AMA's, what's your edge? Why would I use your site? 2. Kick start your content by getting well known people in your niche to host an AMA 3. Forget this idea, use your talent to build something else! :)

emilioolivares··on The 500-mile email (2002)
