emilfihlman··on ChatGPT has a data synchronisation bug that can easily cause data loss
Posted as link because of the length limit.

Has anyone else ran into this?

emilfihlman··on Seattle City Council votes to ban surveillance pricing in sale of groceries
Does anyone know how authority on passing these kinds of rules go, and if they are enforceable?

Is there some state/federal law that delegates power over some things to the municipalities/cities/counties etc that allow them passing ordnance like this?

It feels weird to me that this would not be a state / federal level decision, but maybe that's just my Finnish ass.

emilfihlman··on Claude is a Contrarian
What annoys me about LLMs is that they don't do fact based pushback and form cohesive implementation idea when proceeding.

Like for example if you think there's a possible problem, say that if there's a problem and suggest a workaround, the agent will change direction and implementation to that, even though there never was a problem.

emilfihlman··on Claude, change the “Add to Cart” button to blue
Except you are missing an important aspect: the model includes training data that responds to THIS IS FUCKING WRONG, after which highly likely follows correction patterns and working solutions.

Ie, actually, yes, shouting at the AI can (and does, there are papers on this), work.

emilfihlman··on Claude, change the “Add to Cart” button to blue
Is this what it feels like using Claude?

Holy shit this was the most infuriating thing I've experienced in a while lmao, I felt so relieved when the button was turned to blue, but then so visceral "no no no no no" panic when it turned to the gradient.

Amazing

E: this is a horror simulator, my breathing is becoming shallow and fast, I love it.

emilfihlman··on Pointing at the error: compiler-style diagnostics in uutils coreutils
Cool innovation (actually is good and cool).

Do it after you have actually made the rust version work the same as the C version.

Insane to be adding complexity, breaking compatibility and introducing new bugs to software that needs to function correctly.

emilfihlman··on LLMs reward expertise
You are very much mistaken.

Chatgpt can absolutely do the things here: it can give you files, it can integrate and show web pages that you develop, etc.

There is no need for an "agent", the chat version works just fine and is actually easier for novices.

emilfihlman··on Google fixed more Chrome bugs in June than over the past two years, thanks to AI
>therefore lacks any guard rails you'd expect in a programming language

This is simply not true. Guardrails are enforced by the compiler, and both gcc and clang have a myriad of flags to make C safe, not to mention Fil-C.

emilfihlman··on DeepSeek pause fundraise after comments on compute gap to US leaked (transcript) [pdf]
From another comment: https://github.com/demo-zexuan/liang-wenfeng-investor-meetin...
emilfihlman··on RISCBoy is an open-source portable games console, designed from scratch
I'm quite willing to bet it can be done in this era of enabling developers with slob, which still usually works.
emilfihlman··on Rewriting Bun in Rust
Until this bug is fixed, there's no trusting Bun

This is also not a memory issue but an actual logic issue, so Rust doesn't help there.

emilfihlman··on GPT‑Live
I hope they fixed the models in that they don't interrupt and jump in and that you can order them to be silent. Previous model could not be silent and always cut me off and spoke over me.
emilfihlman··on Bun has an open PR adding shared-memory threads to JavaScriptCore
I would just like to point to a single issue that has major ramifications in using Bun:

emilfihlman··on Google asking many to select a client certificate erroneously
I have no vpn on my part.
emilfihlman··on Google asking many to select a client certificate erroneously
Yeah I would definitely hit no. Should have collected network information while it happened.

What was also interesting is that it prompted me to select a certificate that was definitely not for that page, ie. it accepted any and all certs, not just ones that are for a certain page (I have incus web generated certificates that should be only for that domain and page, which definitely have nothing to do with Google).

emilfihlman··on A €0.01 bank transfer could compromise a banking AI agent
It's akin to an SCP infohazard or memetics.

The way llms are right now, and the way humans are, there is no side channel.

It's all about training, but even with extensive training, output breaks down if it's probability based and not hard logic and state machine.

emilfihlman··on DiffusionGemma: 4x Faster Text Generation
Any text generation model can easily be made to support tool calls.
emilfihlman··on Scientists ejected from diabetes conference for distributing journal reprints
It reduces their credibility if they misrepresent the story.
emilfihlman··on Scientists ejected from diabetes conference for distributing journal reprints
Yes I agree that it's quite silly, of course if we assume they acted in a reasonable way (which I can't say for certain if the security had to result to forcefully ejecting them).

It very badly damages credibility to misrepresent what happened. It doesn't further the cause, only damages it.

emilfihlman··on Scientists ejected from diabetes conference for distributing journal reprints
>“They were respectfully given the opportunity to cease this behavior and chose not to which is why they were escorted out.”

I understand the want to protest, but you do know that misrepresentation doesn't help, right?

Refusing to cease by an even organisers order will, yes, result in being escorted out forcefully by security.

emilfihlman··on Node.js 26.0.0 (Now with Temporal)
Actually, maybe you are correct and I should.
emilfihlman··on US tech firms share Dutch regulator officials' names with Senate
Civil servant's info is public information (at least in Finland it is).

It's good that bureaucrats can't hide behind bureaucracy.

emilfihlman··on US tech firms share Dutch regulator officials' names with Senate
>They are not the ones with the power to decide what happens

This is a very naive interpretation. Bureaucrats have MASSIVE amount of power and control, and in actuality decide many things and how the law is written.

emilfihlman··on Node.js 26.0.0 (Now with Temporal)
Same. Without that I could remove all npm dependence, which would greatly improve security.
emilfihlman··on Node.js 26.0.0 (Now with Temporal)
Because it entirely removes dependency for external libraries and package repositories, like npm, for basic internet interoperability.

I (also) basically use only one package: ws.

emilfihlman··on Node.js 26.0.0 (Now with Temporal)
It's so sad that node refuses to add websocket server support.

Adding websocket would simplify stuff tremendously, as well as make deployments much, much more secure.

emilfihlman··on Doctors Just Staged the Quietest Coup in American History
I very much don't think this blog post passes any sniff test for anything to be taken seriously or given much thought, it's just political agenda posting.

However, there is an interesting question on how presidential physical and mental fitness is evaluated. Does anyone have insight into what rules and regulations govern this and do they have any (preferably supreme court validated) backing?

emilfihlman··on Async Rust never left the MVP state
Rust is a passing faux, safe C will just overtake it.
emilfihlman··on A Tour of Oodi
It's awful as a library, mediocre as an event space and not really good as a hacker space.

It's beautiful, though, but that's about it.

emilfihlman··on South Korea introduces universal basic mobile data access
As a Finn this data allowance is pretty funny to me (though of course not unknown). Here most subscriptions are unlimited.
