emil0r··on Moving on from Rails
Integers becoming 32-bit or 64-bit depending on CPU architecture, bad character-set support, comparison and identity is wacky. If anything of that has changed since last time I looked, all the better :).

He didn't insult you or slam you. He was talking about the language. You can make really neat things with a language that's really bad. Just don't take it personally.

emil0r··on Moving on from Rails
The worst language I've ever written commercial web sites in is called OOiS-Script. You can't release memory, there is no such thing as an array, functions doesn't exist, there is no scope, when you handle XML you have to strip all namespaces because it uses ':' as the indicator for trasversal, there is no XPath so you have to loop through the levels and with a mere 3000 files processed one after another you can run out of memory on a machine with 4 gig of ram because the memory is not released until the request is done, etc.

I've done some really nice stuff with this language. But it's still utter shit in so many ways it's painful. PHP is in many ways a lot better, but has some pretty fundamental flaws that still marks it as really bad. He did however, not say one thing about the developers that use PHP, so why would you slam him for that?

Hi Skore!

I just wanted to say it's been fantastic to read what you've written. Thank you.

There just is no pleasing everyone is there. Next there will be angry calls to +God for not posting public.
emil0r··on Please confirm your email address
In hindsight. The problem is often that we as programmers name things after what we use it for internally, or where we want to end up. Ie, we want an email conformation, but the customer that has to send it, so please do.
emil0r··on Why did Japan surrender?
What about them? They were in a war and rightly more concerned about the lives of their own soldiers over those who wrongly attacked them, were fanatical in their defenses and were looking to drag the war on as long as possible for as favourable terms as possible in a cease-fire. Had the USA gone down the route of a land invasion it probably would've dragged on for several more months, possibly stretching into years. In the end you would've ended up with a peace treaty with the same war-mongering people in charge as before. Not a recipe for success.

emil0r··on An Open Letter To LulzSec
The only real amusement I get from trolling is when people discuss it afterwards and start trying to dissect it you get to meta-trolling, then meta on meta, trollers trolling each other, meta-trolling each other, etc. It's turtles all the way down and at the bottom there's a huge ocean of words that has lost all their meaning.

It amazes me that they can muster the energy to even bother.

emil0r··on Cool, but obscure Unix tools
Has there been any attempts to do that?
emil0r··on Poll: Display points on comments?
To a certain degree you're correct. But it's not exactly the same. With colours you would get larger spans, whereas with numbers you get the immediate feedback. The difference in time is significant for addictive personalities. A second difference is that you don't know the spans, only that they exist, meaning that as the site grows the spans can be upped to keep up with the growing number of users.

Anyway... really like your idea :).

Was going to write something about colouring entire threads or sub-threads as interesting based on the total sum of points or something else compared to everyone else. Would certainly help finding interesting stuff to read in 200+ comment threads. But not too sure how it would work without being invasive.

emil0r··on Poll: Display points on comments?
I'd just rather have colour codes. Threshholds of 5, 10, 25, 45, 75+ or something along those lines.

Points trigger a certain response among some people. The ones that get sucked into WoW for example simply because they have this impulse of getting all the best gear. Works with points as well.

emil0r··on I support Gus
The Qu'ran is a bit different. It's one book, written by one man, in his lifetime, holds mostly direct commands and is written in stone since it's a direct copy of the Qu'ran in heaven that's written by Allah himself. It's meant to be taken literally and you do not change or interpret it. To do so is blasphemy.

What most people in the west haven't realised is that it's Osama bin Ladin that has the theological backing, not the muslims that just wants to go on with their lives.

As for your last comment I hope it's the case, but if it happens it will be despite Islam. A muslim is for example forbidden in the Qu'ran to take any friends among Jews or Christians. Unless it is a feigned friendship for benefit, in which case the Qu'ran condones it.

emil0r··on I support Gus
I think you can put Islam firmly in the state+religion basket. Shar'ia is the Qu'ran, the Hadiths and the Siras all neatly wrapped up for all muslims to live after. Lots of politics in there, very little actual religion.

I do not believe you can ever have a clear and clean cut seperation though, unless you're willing to entertain the idea to withhold any goverment positions from worshippers.

emil0r··on Apple Finally Figures Out A Way To Get An iAd In My Face: An iAd App
The effect iAds so far has had on me is to buy the Pro version just to get rid of the ads. Too invasive and they keep drawing my eyeballs to them and gets in the way of using the app. Probably not what Apple had in mind, but the developers are probably happy.
emil0r··on No-SQL injection in Mongo PHP
All true. I was thinking of the submitted link still. Manually sanitizing instead of having something doing that for you is a bad idea because you will forget.
emil0r··on No-SQL injection in Mongo PHP
Which means a) You're going to forget it at least once. b) For every developer mindful of this, there will be hundreds not knowing about it.

If you ever put "you just need" into a sentence about security you've already lost.

emil0r··on Firefox 4, 5, 6 and 7 to be released before the end of 2011
Old hardcore quake3 player here. Q3 didn't wait for a server response, but the net-code was not that great and the interpolation did iirc not really take into account server responses. You could end up with players teleporting because of network issues. OSP was the first mod iirc that tried to fix it and it was somewhat successful.

The one mod that made great strides to fix the issues with the Q3 net-code was CPM (www.promode.org). 50-70ms to the server felt like 20-30ms in Vanilla Q3 and when you hit 20-30ms in CPM it felt like LAN play in VQ3. It fixed the niggling issues of lost packages (caused players to warp) as well. You even had some players that intentionally downloaded things in the background to cause dropped/delayed packets so that they would warp.

Eventually the net-code in CPM got so good the community even had cross-Atlantic competitions. The team I played in had 100-120 ping vs west-coast American teams on NYC servers and it was actually playable to the point where you could have fairly fair fights with them. Except against Team Abuse... :p. Man what a schooling in team-play and lock-downs of maps they gave my team.

emil0r··on US driving Swedish Data Retention
Oh... we did so much more than just let the Nazis use our railroads. War-profiteering is the word not used by Swedish media and politicians because it's such a dirty word.
emil0r··on Ask HN: Living overseas with a profitable online business
Seconding the stability of the Internet. The speed is indeed not that fast, but when I lived there it was very stable and there were never any problems accessing the American and European parts of the Internet.
emil0r··on Young, Single, Childless Women Earn More Than Men
Depends on the country, the speaker, the statistics they choose and what they choose to speak about.

A favorite trick though from the radical feminists is to lump all the men into one group and all the women into another group and then compare the two. Always, the men will come out on top simply because of biology. Women stay at home more than men starting with pregnancy, then staying at home with the toddler, a lot of women also choose to work less than 100% in order to be at home with their children, etc.

emil0r··on New York governor approves short-term apartment rental ban in NYC
I think it would be more accurate to say the market is regulated by laws.

"laws are created by politicians" probably differs between countries. I wonder which is worse, politicians that don't really care about what they sign or politicians that do care. An incompetent politician that do care is a frightening combination.

emil0r··on Ask HN: More types of flagging?
A time-delay on down-votes perhaps? More of a psychological effect than a technical solution.

Not showing any points above 5 (or 10 or whatever), while still having an internal counter might also help.

A trust system maybe. "I trust this user. So anything he put down as interesting I want marked as interesting."

emil0r··on Are Mobile Payments the Next Big Thing?
The ease would be in not having to sign up in the first place. Place your order, put in your phone number, answer yes and you're done. Smaller sites would be the winners.

You could also more easily implement time-delayed transactions. Make to order-deliveries sometimes don't charge up front, but instead opt to charge when they're about to deliver. If you (the seller) could send a simple SMS asking for payment, or phone a number when you (the buyer) got the invoice instead of having to sign in with your bank on your computer it'd make life easier for at least some people.
