emil0r··on Are Your Programmers Working Hard, Or Are They Lazy?
Having done just that I later about for months before I started to see very noticeable effects. It took me a month to recover to a point where I wanted to look at code again. Half a year before I wanted to give it another try.

In comparison I got a lot done when I spent two months working on code 4-6 hours a day including weekends.

Is that statement objective or subjective?
emil0r··on In Firefox 24 and following, mark all versions of Java as unsafe
Bankid is based on java iirc.
emil0r··on In Firefox 24 and following, mark all versions of Java as unsafe
Depends on where you are in the world. Java is required for online banking in Norway, while it's mostly unused in Sweden, the neighbouring country. Both use Java for online verification to government sites.

The rollers for the tracking ball would collect a lot of dust. Could be one reason they opted out of it. Cleaning the rollers for the track ball every other week to get a smooth feeling would quickly become bothersome, contrary to the nice feeling of relaxation or thrill the console is supposed to give you.
emil0r··on Poll: What are your liked and disliked programming languages?
Given all the weird syntax people put up with in other languages I don't really get the complaint.

"One of the peculiar sins of the twentieth century which we've developed to a very high level is the sin of credulity. It has been said that when human beings stop believing in God they believe in nothing. The truth is much worse: they believe in anything."

How would a Full Stack developer look outside the web world?
emil0r··on Clojure in the Field [video]
I am very happy with Clojure :). But every time I have tried to introduce it into a workplace it has been the effect of the alien spacecraft. Too alien, too little to hold onto for the average working programmer (by this, I don't mean they are average, it's only the experience I'm talking about).

For your second point I completely agree. But shouldn't say, multimethods be doable in most other languages? In some, who are very strongly leaning towards OO, it probably wouldn't make that much sense. But others who can be written in a functional style could certainly benefit from it.

Informative talk and I really like the vision he presents in the beginning of it. I started with Clojure from python and while a lot of good things are present in python, I really miss the whole notion of "let's step back a bit and ponder whether we are on the right track or not" that is present in the Clojure community. Especially the core team.

If I could just get half of what's in Clojure trickle into the mainstream languages I'd be a happy bunny.

emil0r··on Are Current Web Design Trends Pushing Us Back to 1999? (2011)
The one thing I think he missed was the use of a ton of javascript snippets from different services used to "enhance" the site. Several seconds are normally added to loading the page.
emil0r··on Ask HN: What's the best technical talk you've heard?
I second Simple Made Easy. It put into words what I thought was wrong but never could formulate.
emil0r··on America's Baby Bust
Not likely. There are several problems with an aging population. The two big ones in regards to innovation is a shrinking economy and a lack of energy. Both being driven by the young.

Thank you for the link. Was really interesting to read Behe's response to the critique.
emil0r··on The Worst Argument In The World
Don't you think what you're writing as a reply is a bit vague? How would you describe the evolution of the coagulation system? What different systems existed before the coagulation system that fell together into the current system?

From what I remember from the book the coagulation system looked to be one monolithic piece and not built up of smaller systems.

emil0r··on The Worst Argument In The World
Examples from Michael Behe's book Darwin's Black Box:

Blood's ability to coagulate is a cascading system with over 30 parts. Remove one part and it's fatal for the individual. How could a system like that evolve gradually over time?

He lists quite a few such systems. Bacteria having motors, the cell's operational system, the anti-body system (again a cascading system of large complexity).

emil0r··on Why don't they just..?
Fairly big difference between asking "Why don't they...?" and "Why don't they just...?". The 'just' tacked onto the end of the beginning of the question implies it should be totally obvious.

emil0r··on Shall We Use Clojure?
So it's further ahead and you can't see what will happen there. Sounds like a perfectly good use of the word, given the context :).
emil0r··on Why do you think people are poor?
One TL;DR would be that the liberal arts are very important. As such it follows that reading, words & meaning, as well as the pursuit of thought are very important. The conclusion is that you should read the article.

CJK = Chinese Japanese Korean I believe. There is no concept of italics in those languages.
emil0r··on The love and hate of Node.js
I would believe it on the basis that every programmer I've talked to, from a couple of years after Java was introduced, until today, didn't really like Java. Things became very complex very fast for the language that gave birth to FactoryFactoryPattern.
emil0r··on I only know PHP. How do I write a Web application in Python?
So it's not acceptable behaviour, yet we shouldn't point it because we should know it has this unacceptable behaviour? Doesn't make any sense to me I'm afraid.

emil0r··on In Memoriam: Christopher Hitchens, 1949–2011
1) The OP made the claim that our genes carry our experiences onto our children. I've never experienced that and AFAIK it doesn't happen.

2) Raising a child doesn't give the child your experiences either. I have no memory of what my father experienced in his life based on him raising me. AFAIK it doesn't happen to other people either.
