emhart··on Show HN: Solvers.io – use your skills to improve our world
I definitely wasn't expecting the "Got Skills" button to just link me down to the unorganized project listings. I assumed that would be a place to list myself as an available volunteer with the ability to list my skill set or something like that, then receive suggestions for projects with an option to browse all of the projects.

I love the idea, and I don't want to suggest you go toward catchafire's very narrow model of pre-determined skill sets. That leaves me out in the cold, which is frustrating. But the ability to list your expertise and willingness to help so that project creators could proactively reach out to potential volunteers, would be awesome.

emhart··on Show HN: Simple translation by email
Awesome, thanks, Vasco, I look forward to trying it out this weekend when I have some time to go through old sources.

Also - just on the UX part, when I was able to confirm the account, my balance read as 0, I refreshed, still 0, so I went to top up again, added 5 Euro, on the confirmation screen it said my current balance was still 0, but then when I went into my dashboard it revealed I had a 10 Euro balance.

I don't at all mind, 5 or 10 are both fine for me, only mentioning in case that order of events is at all useful to you in debugging things.

Congrats on the launch, and good luck. I can't wait to use it :)

This is great, I'm particularly excited about the pricing. I was also wondering about the Crowd Translation Community. I do a lot of research that lands me in foreign texts. Often they are 100-200 years old & contain industry-specific terms.

I've always been wary of shelling out for a translation service, as I worry that the subject matter & age may make translation to English an expensive/arduous process. But, at a penny a word, I'd definitely be more willing to at least test the waters.

Being that I may momentarily have your attention, could you give an opinion on whether or not you think my use case would actually be successful? Again, with your pricing, I'm down to try it regardless, so I'm signing up, but I don't want to get my hopes up too high.

EDIT: Just so you are aware, I'm trying to add money to my account, but the confirmation email doesn't seem to be arriving. I've requested another, nothing. Maybe you are getting hammered by activity right now, but UX-wise I think forcing confirmation of the account should come BEFORE you enter your financial information, not after, as it leaves me babysitting it.

emhart··on Show HN: Selfie Ticket
Love this idea, lots of fun and a lot friendly than most event ticket experiences. Does it fallback gracefully to a non-selfie/non-phone ticket if someone doesn't wish to, or isn't able to participate?
emhart··on Questions People Ask When I Tell Them I Own an Airplane
That is an amazing photo :) Sorry to hear about the fate of the plane, but thanks for sharing the memory.

It's even more fun with skin in the game.
emhart··on Editorially is shutting down
I completely understand that. It definitely has a higher intimidation factor than Editorially ever did.
emhart··on Editorially is shutting down
+1 - my favorite tool. I got into the Editorially beta just after, like, within a couple days, I began using Draft. Couldn't tear myself away.
emhart··on Editorially is shutting down
Take a look at Draft:

emhart··on Editorially is shutting down
I dunno, Draft is doing quite well as far as I can tell. I'm using it to write a book & maintain a bunch of other writing. A lot of people who have to write constantly care a great deal about the experience of writing, not to mention the specific features. Google Docs is a competitor for Microsoft word, neither offer a pleasant writing experience.
emhart··on Ask HN: Do you have any code currently in production that you're ashamed of?
"One day though"

I say that to myself all the time.

emhart··on Ask HN: Do you have any code currently in production that you're ashamed of?
Oh yes, I'm actually in the middle of cleaning up a huge chunk of it. Managed to strip 1200 LOC yesterday, going for another 1k at least today. Then a long series of commits, a new deployment and the next time I, or anyone else, has to look at this, I won't feel quite as guilty.

That said? It is an incredibly rare luxury in my career thus far, to get these sorts of organizational breaks. I recently checked the code of the first website I ever built - I was learning on the job and asked to convert our flash only website to HTML/CSS.

To my horror, every line of my code was still in place. Every dumb mistake, every awkwardly shoved pixel, every dubious form. Everything. I actually found a couple potentially serious bugs & emailed my former employer to report them. Bleh.

emhart··on Show HN: Wagtail, our new Django CMS
+1 for compiled CSS/JS. I'd love that and it would get me up and playing with it much faster, personally.
emhart··on You Won’t Believe How Much Money We Wasted On Bad Hires In 2013
I was actually wondering the same thing! It was posted by one of his employees, and he mentions HN in one of the comments of the post. It's likely entirely cynical of me, but I can't help but wonder if the marketing folks are made to submit his blog posts to HN and when this one got traction and negative attention they collectively flagged it.
emhart··on Sony sells its waterproof mp3 player inside a bottle of water
I got trapped in Seattle a couple years ago after some flight cancellations some former students of a colleague put me up for a few days. They had a waterproof notepad suctioned to the wall of their guest shower and each morning I would draw out detailed diagrams of locks & methods of attack. I found it was a bit frustrating to get a good transfer onto the pages, but really liked the novelty of being able to take "shower notes".
emhart··on Sony sells its waterproof mp3 player inside a bottle of water
Dramatically different price point, but I've been using my Sony Xperia Tablet for exactly that. Completely submersible = NPR & email in the shower every morning. Admittedly, I take longer showers in the miserable winter of norther Vermont, so I like any excuse to stay under the hot water longer.

I have generally ignored this flappy bird malarkey, but this sucked me right in. Nicely done!
emhart··on You Won’t Believe How Much Money We Wasted On Bad Hires In 2013
re: side thought - we do 8:30-5 where I'm at, as we generally set aside half an hour for lunch. That said - in the service industries I worked in for many years, you would work an 8 hour shift with one short break, one half hour break and get paid for 35 hours at the end of the week. I know that isn't universal, but it was a very common experience in my work life.
emhart··on You Won’t Believe How Much Money We Wasted On Bad Hires In 2013
I can only imagine how grating this post must be to those people still in his employ who had developed any sort of relationship with those let go. Or those still employed who worry, every day, if he isn't looking at them with disdain as they walk in the door. In my experience, the "culture" upper management experience is rarely the culture on the floor.
emhart··on CoinDesk Removes Mt. Gox from Bitcoin Price Index
Eh, Coindesk found that 70% of users polled were unable to pull money out of MtGox. Even if that number were half the real rate, that's still absurd.
emhart··on Richard Lynch, an awesome PHP community guy and former colleague needs our help
I was feeling for him & those that knew him, but purely observing, as I was well outside his circle of influence. Then I read your comment and snapped back to humanity, remembered that this was a person and I was a person and I'm doing OK enough to extend some cash, regardless of the separation of our worlds. Thanks for posting your comment.

emhart··on Ask HN: Why am I a terrible software engineer?
I've come to believe that there are moments, for me, where I have accidentally attained some sort of threshold of knowledge where despite never measuring up to a task before, I revisit it for the 10th time, and this time, for some reason, I'm able to start making progress.

I'd keep reading, but also, just do some dead simple tutorials in whatever space you are interested in. Codecademy was a great motivator for me, because though I had read a ton, I hadn't managed to really accomplishing anything on my own. With their hand-holding I was suddenly genuinely understanding concepts that had been very fuzzy to me up to that point.

Give it a shot :) Good luck!

This whole thread is a masterclass in falsely framing arguments.
emhart··on Google Doodle Upholds Gay Rights Ahead of Sochi Olympics
Agreed. I'm miserably uncomfortable with the pseudo-social-science veneer being splashed around in the name of supporting the repression of a minority culture.

What is happening on this thread? Is this really a reflection of the community here at hn? I'm flabbergasted. Wake up, West coast, we need you!
