emgeee··on FTC Chair Lina Khan on AI regulation, startup acquisitions, and more [audio]
FWIW Khan originally came to prominence because of her paper on Amazon specifically so it makes sense big tech would be a priority.
emgeee··on USB-C cable with the bandwidth and USB type imprinted on the connector
Anecdotally I was able to get this command to return 8 watts by using a usb-A -> usb-C cable meant for charging a mouse.

Cool update, really excited to get native support for air quality measurements here
emgeee··on Trucking startup Convoy closes operations with no buyer
Dang, no severance or healthcare is really brutal and signals to me they probably should have called it earlier.
emgeee··on The reason CEOs want workers to RTO is because they want you to quit
IMO executives who expect everyone to RTO but don't themselves is the worst kind of hypocrisy.
emgeee··on Supreme Court rules against Epic, so Apple can keep its App Store payment rules
Doesn't Apple have a history of dragging their feet with adopting new technologies in Safari? Not sure why this would be any different...
emgeee··on Silicon Valley’s business model is a scam
> The transfer of lousy tech equity to late-stage investors who have been led to believe it's valuable sure looks like a good blow-off to me.

Uber did $8.8b in revenue last quarter is apparently on track to post operating income profitability by the end of the year. Seems like the company still has plenty of value.

Also, this article makes no mention of ZIRP -- which in hindsight is starting to seem like a very large enabler of the subsidization strategies we've seen over the last decade.

emgeee··on How to register a Kei truck in Pennsylvania
Tragedy of the commons situation, only way out is through regulation
emgeee··on USPTO to add surcharge on non-DOCX patent applications in 2023

emgeee··on What software engineers can learn from the rapid collapse of Fast
I was an engineer at Fast for over a year and wanted to clarify a few points-- - engineers did have access to data and could write their own queries to check revenue (but few people did until the article came out). - the strategy leadership decided on was to go after massive enterprise sellers which would, in theory, result in step-change functions in revenue. Many people knew about the low numbers but were willing to let the strategy play out for a while. There was a lot of excitement internally around closing the first $1B+ seller - Internally, the culture was something akin to "toxic positivity" which meant that we weren't willing to discuss failures or misses in a productive way - The company spent a lot of money on marketing events including sponsorship deals with the Tampa Bay Lightning and the rumored million dollar concert by the Chain Smokers. People are talking a lot about high engineer salaries but IMO those were far from the biggest problem (possible biased view)

The story is a lot more complicated and nuanced than the headlines you read in publications but I will say that Fast was full of really talented folks who I'd be happy to work with again. For me, a big lesson I took away from this experience is the perils of an overly positive fully remote culture. It's very easy for leadership to hide things from people when information doesn't easily spread across different organizations

emgeee··on Beyond Meat S-1
That's really interesting, I'd read a blog post about the process.

emgeee··on The Mac App Store Won’t Make You Rich
As long as Apple continues to take 30% I'm not so sure thats true. Mobile devs put up with it because it's that or nothing but as long as Apple allows you to side load programs on Mac I can't imagine it'll ever make economic sense.

emgeee··on 16 Things
I still think that people need to be told about the medium and often convinced why they should care. I think we'll probably start seeing more networks of podcasters that can pool their resources to produce better content, kind of like what npr has done and what http://gimletmedia.com is trying to do. I'm not really convinced that podcasts will be able to be entirely supported through ads in the future so I think there will have to be some innovation on that front, maybe an all-you-can-eat service like Spotify will emerge...

I wonder if soundcloud will become a major player in this space since a lot of the podcasts I listen to end up being hosted by them.

emgeee··on Node.js, a popular tool for building modern internet services, has split in two
Oh I like that- drop the 'E' for express since it's a little redundant and you get "AIM"
emgeee··on Bilingual brains: Variety makes you mentally fit
I might not be so much about the language but about the paradigm. Certainly going from Java to C++ might not be that different but through in something like Haskell and you almost have to entirely rethink your solution.
emgeee··on Mistakes AngularJS Developers Make
I think it was such a ubiquitous pattern in tutorials and apps early on that it became a norm people didn't question. As the author mentioned, it isn't really something that matters too much until you really start to build a complex app.

In my own experience, I've found taking such a modular approach too early on can actually hinder productivity as I find myself spending too much time on boilerplate and figuring out if, for example, this service REALLY belongs with feature X or feature Y.

emgeee··on Marc Andreessen Sounds Warning on Startups Burning Cash
The yield curve has been relatively stable at close to 0. Indeed (as I understand it) that's the entire point of quantitive easing: it artificially keeps interest rates on long term securities down to encourage that money to be lent and spent http://marketrealist.com/2014/03/fed-taper-quantitative-easi....
