emersonrsantos··on Washington state lawmakers approve human corpse composting
Gastric acid, just to name one.
emersonrsantos··on Cooking as a Service
Is this new? Food courts and beer gardens that I go complement their sales by using lots of delivery services, and in some days you will see more delivery than local consumption.

There are four major delivery companies that dominates the market here in this city: iFood, James Delivery, Rappi and lastly Uber Eats. A couple of these companies also do supermarket shopping for you - no Amazon in Brazil for everything shopping.

Ayn Rand comes to mind, cigarettes and amphetamines, and it clearly displays in her personal life: paranoia, anger, rage.

Also Steve Jobs marijuana and most famous LSD habit, according to him, one of the "two or three most important things" he ever did in his life.

emersonrsantos··on Ibuprofen alters human testicular physiology to produce compensated hypogonadism
Ibuprofen induced liver toxiticy:

https://livertox.nih.gov/Ibuprofen.htm

"Rates of serum aminotransferase elevations during low dose, chronic ibuprofen therapy are comparable to those that occur with placebo controls (0.4%). However, higher rates of ALT elevations occur with high, full doses of 2,400 to 3,200 mg daily (up to 16%)."

emersonrsantos··on PHP + Ajax scripts or the modern ecosystem dilemma
Take serverless, for example. It’s just CGI that scales better. People will see this simple, but powerful approach, and will hopefully return to a transactional webpage programming style (as the Web was intended to be). All the monoliths will be out of fashion again.
emersonrsantos··on Rare brain-eating amoebas killed woman who rinsed her sinuses with tap water
Yeah, I think a distorted sense implies amplification or narrow signals as well.
emersonrsantos··on Rare brain-eating amoebas killed woman who rinsed her sinuses with tap water
Yes, it distorts the sense of smell and taste - my mother-in-law would smell an annoying floral aroma everywhere, can’t smell certain foods or she would get immediate heartburn, and couldn’t taste salt or taste it too much in certain hours of the day. It’s weird! But we tend to not take our sense of smell and taste so seriously so I think it should be very important to the brain to have a healthy sense of smell and taste or else you would get these “hallucinations” because it cannot be a real allergy.
emersonrsantos··on Rare brain-eating amoebas killed woman who rinsed her sinuses with tap water
Your symptoms are the same of people with untreated nasal polyps. Ask your doctor about nasal corticosteroid spray treatment.
emersonrsantos··on Is the Internet to Blame for the Rise of Authoritarianism?
The internet was never meant to be decentralized or anonymous: it was conceived more as a redundant network that would enable communications in case of a nuclear accident. I think we already live in Orwell’s world - I don’t care or believe privacy is something that can be attained easily today unless you are willing to cut your contact with every computer in the world, which is just not feasible.
emersonrsantos··on Type 2 diabetes: NHS to offer 800-calorie diet treatment
Bodybuilders use carbs restrictions (keto, intermittent, kind - complex vs simple carbs) to regulate muscle mass and fat, insulin and GH sensitivity, water retention mediated by glycogen, etc...
emersonrsantos··on Type 2 diabetes: NHS to offer 800-calorie diet treatment
When people will realize that carbs are the only non-essential macronutrient? The sports community (especially bodybuilding) knows that for decades.

If an athlete says to me that a thing he does to his body work 95% of the time, I would consider to try it, and already did, some things against over-the-counter conventional medicine like this no-carb diet.

emersonrsantos··on Unscii – a bitmapped Unicode font for blocky graphics
This is beautiful and heart-warming. Thank you.

I use for terminal the classic IBM mainframe 3270 font [1], but I can replace that in a heartbeat with Unscii, which is more uniform and less OCR-y.

emersonrsantos··on Insomnia: To Pursue Sleep So Hard You Become Invigorated by the Chase
I think I saw this approach for the first time on Viktor Frankl books which formed the basis for logotherapy:

"Don't aim at success. The more you aim at it and make it a target, the more you are going to miss it. For success, like happiness, cannot be pursued; it must ensue, and it only does so as the unintended side effect of one's personal dedication to a cause greater than oneself or as the by-product of one's surrender to a person other than oneself. Happiness must happen, and the same holds for success: you have to let it happen by not caring about it. I want you to listen to what your conscience commands you to do and go on to carry it out to the best of your knowledge. Then you will live to see that in the long-run—in the long-run, I say!—success will follow you precisely because you had forgotten to think about it”

emersonrsantos··on Non cogito, ergo sum
Author is vague in defining thinking. To think is to be conscious not only of thoughts but emotions, movement, awareness, sight, instincts, etc...

His examples of people losing focus (ie. thinking about a movement) are right, but not because thinking is bad, but because one was focused on the wrong faucet of one's consciousness. Conscience doesn’t exist only in the intellect. Animals are not unconscious.

emersonrsantos··on Experiment that ended in 1767 still linked to higher incomes, education levels
I agree with you. We have a more stong Guaraní presence in Bolivia and Paraguay today, about 280 thousand people living in four countries from a study in 2017 [1], which 85 thousand living in Brazil, which is neglegible comparing to the population numbers in that regions.

The reality is that those communities are very poor, having even cases of institutionalized racism, where children were separated from their parents at their Guaraní and Kaiowá communities by the brazilian state and sent to child safety services, atrocious. [2]

emersonrsantos··on Experiment that ended in 1767 still linked to higher incomes, education levels
> Valencia didn’t just rule out other possible explanations. He also established a few reasons that areas near the missions have tended to succeed at higher rates, even today.

It's known that these areas had four immigration phases, from 1820 to 1960. The monarchy (then the government) began to stimulate the arrival of Europeans because of the vast land and good climate. The monarchy even used agressive propaganda and megalomanic promises. Our recent elected president came from one of those european immigration waves, from Italian Veneto region in 1888.

There's a huge italian and german presence in this southern region (as well as in Argentina and neighbors), and also great natural resources that allowed agriculture and family farming to those european experienced farmers. This southern region today produces most of Brazil's grains, oilseeds (and exports).

So in a way, knowledge, higher incomes and education levels were imported. Brazil is full of curious phenomena, and it deserves more sociological study, being a young country.

emersonrsantos··on The making of an opioid epidemic
This isn't new.

The "sanatorium" concept was lost somewhere in the 20th century. The sanatorium idea was the cure by the gradual restoration of health.

Today is almost medication every time. Zero to little attention to physical and mental health restoration. It's like plastic surgery.

emersonrsantos··on The making of an opioid epidemic
> Portenoy toured the country, describing opioids as a gift from nature and promoting access to narcotics as a moral argument. Being pain-free was a human right, he said. In 1993, he told the New York Times of a “growing literature showing that these drugs can be used for a long time, with few side-effects, and that addiction and abuse are not a problem”.

Just very similar to what is said about benzos, marijuana and are starting to be said about LSD, GHB and the likes. We need more scientific evidence to know the toll these narcotics and psychotropics can cause to us in the long term, like the same scrutiny they treated the tobacco industry.

emersonrsantos··on The military’s obsession with energy drinks is contributing to PTSD
There's a third way, very popular among hackers, yerba mate. Used by South American people.

It has good caffeine content, but apparently has a slower absorption. Helps you to keep focused, without the strong highs and lows you have with pure coffee.

emersonrsantos··on The military’s obsession with energy drinks is contributing to PTSD
PTSD can come from many factors, I'm not saying that it's caused specifically and only by sugar. People who didn't go to war also have PTSD, as we also have soldies who went to war and didn’t come back with PTSD.
emersonrsantos··on The military’s obsession with energy drinks is contributing to PTSD
The current facts about coffee and sugar are the following: drinking coffee is good for your mental and physical, while sugar is linked to depression, addiction, anxiety, heart problems, obesity and not surprisingly, PTSD:
