emersonrsantos··on The pandemic is giving people vivid, unusual dreams
More time sleeping will give you more time to dream.
emersonrsantos··on Ask HN: Programs that saved you 100 hours?
Zsh, mainly because of shortcuts, shared history, autocomplete that works
emersonrsantos··on The death toll for Covid-19 in Nembro, Italy
I wonder why no one is using Wuhan, China numbers. Not reliable?
emersonrsantos··on Evidence of massive-scale emotional contagion through social networks (2014) [pdf]
Blaming this on social networks is overdue, in my point of view. What about TV, books, music, arts, ideologies, religions? Yes, they play a part as massive as the social networks and were used (and studied) as a media for contagion.

Then, it remains the question that what's different from an emotion that helps or harms people. Social networks acts in this way as a decentralised marketing tool, and totally vulnerable to non-organic manipulation.

emersonrsantos··on Guide to Equity Compensation
How about LLCs? Any guide?
emersonrsantos··on Happiness is more like poetry than algorithms
I always thought of happiness to be in these final passages of Walter Pater’s book, The Renaissance:

“Every moment some form grows perfect in hand or face; some tone on the hills or the sea is choicer than the rest; some mood of passion or insight or intellectual excitement is irresistibly real and attractive for us - for that moment only. Not the fruit of experience, but experience itself, is the end.”

emersonrsantos··on Ask HN: How do you process payments?
Ebanx, for the Latin America market.
emersonrsantos··on del.icio.us is now an unconfigured Apache install
I think this was first of the short URLs that played with words and TLD’s that I remember.
emersonrsantos··on SoftICE
I used this, and you had that kind of power over the machine only in the low-end architectures, Z80, 6502 and on the enterprise, on IBM mainframes, to breakpoint and stop and look at what the processors was doing. Of course, you still can do the same thing on mainframes, but we are forgetting that in the end, on our X64 machines, that we are all running machine code.
emersonrsantos··on Gustav III of Sweden's Coffee Experiment
As with all drugs, it's not understood the paradoxical drug effects. Stimulants can make people sleepy, and the most potent of benzodiazepamines can make one more agressive. The endocrine system (also the immune system) is so complex and so full of variables and network effects that I think that science has a long way ahead for a precise scientific understanding of all the positive and negative effects of these drug categories.
emersonrsantos··on Thank HN: You helped me get a new job
Congratulations, and have a wonderful time in Sao Paulo! You rock!
emersonrsantos··on SMS is not 2FA-secure

emersonrsantos··on SMS is not 2FA-secure
Ran Bar-Zik, from Israel, created a technique to hack most voice 2FA by using a weak voicemail password. It was largely used in 2019 to hack Brazilian politicians, including state ministers. The hacked telegram messages were passed to Glenn Greenwald, linked to Assange.
emersonrsantos··on Lesser Known Coding Fonts
I like 3270font, inspired on 3270 mainframe terminals: https://github.com/rbanffy/3270font
emersonrsantos··on The NBA Feels a Backlash in China After a Tweet Supporting Hong Kong
As South Park brilliantly told us: “You’re gonna have to lower your ideals of freedom if you want to suck on the warm teat of China.”
emersonrsantos··on Jonathan Ledgard Believes Imagination Could Save the World
Colonialism is theft. If they bought land from the natives that would be moral. Native people have all rights to home it has built, the land it has tilled and the livestock it has raised. Nothing to do with capitalism.
emersonrsantos··on Jonathan Ledgard Believes Imagination Could Save the World
In capitalism, agreement or disagreement with someone doesn’t lead you to death.
emersonrsantos··on Nanix: An idea for a modern, small, Unix-like operating system
Sounds like Fuzix [1] - it fits in a 720kb diskette but it's for 8-bit processors.

emersonrsantos··on Kubernetes 1.16
Assuming that Borg it's proprietary (IE, zero documentation, no community, no real user cases outside of Google), yes. As all Google projects, let's wait its complexity doesn't collapse under its own weight, leaving no options but to move to somewhere simpler, which isn't on the horizon.
emersonrsantos··on The Eternal Mainframe (2013)
As the serverless is a return of the terminal (cgi-bin, telnet, IBM CICS, ...) sessions.
emersonrsantos··on The Eternal Mainframe (2013)
IBM does exactly that with LinuxOne: "What if you only needed ONE server platform for the security, scale and performance your business demands?"
emersonrsantos··on Tell HN: Thank you for not redesigning Hacker News
Amen. It’s the most pleasant site I use every day. Even Google search is beginning to slow down to a crawl in some hours (and Google used to be blazing fast).
emersonrsantos··on Ask HN: How Do You Read?
I cannot read without a pencil. I highlight the important passages and then I make an effort of memorizing that passages. Think you're a monk and are reading the Bible, reading by verses and memorizing, incorporating that into your knowledge. Take notes of related ideas, expand the text, don't be reductionist, think of the whole.
emersonrsantos··on MacBook Pro Keyboard Drives Me Crazy
To run MacOS?
emersonrsantos··on Brazil's President Blames NGOs for Amazon Fires
Exactly, INPE institute’s direction is having a political fight with the Brazilian government, which accuses INPE of manipulating the numbers. I think that’s why NASA removed that data.
emersonrsantos··on Brazil's President Blames NGOs for Amazon Fires
According to this NASA report, this is a natural occurrence on this time of the year:

> As of August 16, 2019, an analysis of NASA satellite data indicated that total fire activity across the Amazon basin this year has been close to the average in comparison to the past 15 years.

If you want to build your own micro PaaS, which is from Git to Deploy (on a Kubernetes cluster), check out https://rio.io (disclaimer: happy user).
emersonrsantos··on Python Is Eating the World
Definitely EVE Online's MMO secret weapon is Python: https://www.eveonline.com/article/stackless-python-2.7 - as well as its numerous ecosystem utilities like Pyfa, Evernus, used by tens of thousands per day.
emersonrsantos··on Gmail on NT 3.51 with IE 1.5 via WRP
Windows NT 3.51 is the new "8-bit" computer. Wow.
emersonrsantos··on The NYC subway system runs on OS/2
If I remember well, Trenitalia POS and many European banks still use OS/2. A lot of mainframes have OS/2 as a frontend to boot (IPL) the big iron. Got heartbroken when OS/2 got sold.
