emeltzer··on With GoBank, You Can Carry All Your Money In Your Pocket
Yeah, in the US Charles Schwab provides most of this stuff (they refund all ATM fees so you effectively can use whatever ATM you want, they have an app w/ check depositing, etc) and has for a long time. Don't really get it.
emeltzer··on The Next 1,000 Start-Ups
The "instant signup" page says I have to wait one day for underwriters to assess the app, is that normal?
emeltzer··on The end of the road for OEMs
"seats upholstered with the tanned skin of Scandinavian virgins"

Ew?

emeltzer··on Draconian ‘Wi-Fi police' stalk Olympic Games
I'm so glad the chances of San Francisco hosting the olympics in the near future are basically 0
emeltzer··on On the business of e-mail clients / Sparrow
"I don't much care about the successes of the developers if they come at the cost of the tools I've invested time switching into"

It's a bit silly to say that you don't care about their interests, if they come at the expense of your interests, but you think that them having what is arguably a milder version of that same attitude (i.e. that they value their own financial interests over your time invested in their product) is a "dick move".

emeltzer··on Entitlement and Acquisition
What law entitles users to bug fixes for major issues?
emeltzer··on 500 Startups Raises New $50M Fund, Adds 4 New Partners. 250 investments to date
MyGengo has built a fantastically useful tool which has saved me a ton of time and money. I don't know anything about the addressable market size, but they have nailed the product.
emeltzer··on Notch's next game is an MMO
Strongly disagree with this. Minecraft's graphics are a direct consequence of what the game IS (i.e. a world made out of large-ish blocks). More realistic (that is, less stylized) textures look strange on top of huge blocks, and anything that obscured the block structure of the world would have made Minecraft a worse game.
emeltzer··on Where is the Hacker News source code?
Thanks. That doesn't appear to be the latest HN though (no search for example)
emeltzer··on Inadmissible assumptions underlying Internet policy
Would you mind explaining what the alternative is? (that is, what non-market-based approach to web publishing is better than the status quo?)
emeltzer··on Kevin Rose Will Join Google
All of you who are saying things in judgement of Kevin Rose's behavior, have some perspective. This is the planet you live on: http://static.ddmcdn.com/gif/earth-1.jpg

It has lots of problems, waiting for good solutions. Instead of explaining the nuances of your latest opinion of Kevin Rose, get up, and start fixing things!

emeltzer··on Your Coffee Shop Doesn’t Use Two-Phase Commit (Starbucks async processing model)
I'd be very interested in a description of how italian coffee shops handle a rush
emeltzer··on Double Fine Adventure Kickstarter finishes at $3,335,250
Yep, we targeted 10k for this project (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/tocguide/toc-guide-to-sf...) and with 24 hours to go we have 15k. We certainly don't have any name-brand power!
emeltzer··on Show HN: Petridish.org, a kickstarter for scientific research
Why is there no link to information about the team under About?
emeltzer··on [dead]
Yikes.
emeltzer··on A neat way to fold a sheet of paper
I'd be interested in seeing that. Someone did make it in Wolfram: http://demonstrations.wolfram.com/MiuraMapFoldingAndUnfoldin...
emeltzer··on A neat way to fold a sheet of paper
Actually, the same professor (Miura) who invented the fold I talked about in that note came up with another way of folding (that also involves binding part of the map) that does "reference a portion" much better than the traditional way manages. You can find it if you google for "Design of portable maps enabling longitudinal access" Miura, 2006
emeltzer··on A neat way to fold a sheet of paper
Err, if you can issue me a pardon here, that was meant to be a footnote but I got the markdown wrong. The footnote should read: "By conventionally folded I mean folded first horizontally and then vertically such that each folded unit is rectangular."
emeltzer··on Show HN: Postmates is delivering happiness today in SF
Beautiful app.
emeltzer··on I had no idea how to make custom maps, so I learnt by doing. You should too.
Your map styling looks really great, nice job!
emeltzer··on [dead]
fixed, ha
emeltzer··on Why I don't use recent travel startups
disclosure: i'm currently selling a printed map (kickstarter.com/projects/1147214836/toc-guide-to-sf)

I think social data is much more useful as a filter for a curated list than it is when used on the set of ALL establishments in a city.

If the list is prefiltered to only include establishments that are at least excellent examples of whatever they are trying to be, social data is a useful way to figure out what to show the user.

Seeing what places my friends have been going to is much much less useful to me than a carefully assembled list of excellent places. For a great example of this, see "Tokyo by Tokyo." _much_ better than any social algorithmic solution can currently do.

emeltzer··on Why we didn't make an app
Yep. I didn't get to mention the purely tactile reasons we went with a printed map, but it was definitely a big factor.

If you have a look at the "Fold" section on the kickstarter page, we put up two diagrams from the original paper describing the folding method we used, that shows a light-traced image of how one's hands move when unfolding a conventionally folded map vs. a miura folded map. The latter simply feels much better!

emeltzer··on A study of the Zen aesthetic
I really like the mnemonic value of the examples in this post. Having a concrete example and a picture for each aesthetic principle makes them easy to recall later. As a designer, having the words to describe a form or situation in a specific way is really useful!
emeltzer··on Create content like you create products.
You should write (essays, or tweets, or blog posts, but please, not "content") because you have something you'd like to say. Maybe it's a new idea, maybe it's a comment on someone elses idea, but it shouldn't be thought of as a product.

Think of the better writers on the internet (Maciej Cieglowski, Paul Graham, Glenn Greenwald maybe?) None of these dudes create "content"

emeltzer··on Poll: How much did you earn from your stock options during exit?
The company was Scoopler. Please keep in mind that all you have here is one persons account of what happened--still, let's not beat around the bush.
emeltzer··on Would you like to play a game?
http://tqft.net/wiki/Maneki_Neko may provide a bit of a hint as to what we're doing, but don't take it too literally :)

Why is the issue of parole not particularly interesting to you?
emeltzer··on Beijing HN Meetup 9/10
