emchammer··on Wharton's Siegel says it's scandalous the US doesn't have a rare earths reserve
You have to admit that selling off the national strategic helium reserve was flawed. Let's not even talk about the public lands.

The article features a prominent screenshot of a post from Stephen Miller. I cannot find that post on his account https://x.com/stephenm. Is this a quirk of X being difficult to navigate?

emchammer··on Death rates rose in hospital ERs after private equity firms took over
I’ll take it. I’ll take the flag. My comment was cynical and unfounded in the kind of discourse that we should see on HN. I will not edit it either. For posterity, I was thinking of the recent cutbacks to prevent “waste, fraud and abuse”, which, coming from a senator, should have been grounded in an even higher standard, rather than walking away from requests for clarification.
emchammer··on Death rates rose in hospital ERs after private equity firms took over
According to the article, the caps were enacted because of a fear that the people might want too much healthcare. Do I even need to look into which party pushed this?
emchammer··on Accenture to 'exit' staff that cannot be retrained for age of AI
God, I love this kind of hot take. It fills in the blanks that the website’s design leaves out.
emchammer··on History of Telecommunications T-Carrier
Thanks for the bit of history. I read that by the early 1970s, a number of smaller recording studios in Los Angeles were linked by T1 lines to Capitol Records in order to make use of their famous reverberation chambers. I wondered who manufactured such high-performance ADCs and DACs at that time.

It depends on where you draw the line for acting in good faith.

Justice Antonin Scalia's opening statement before a 2011 Senate Judiciary Committee hearing is worth watching. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ggz_gd--UO0

Even more worth reading are the Federalist Papers, cover-to-cover, as he suggested. The depth to which the Framers considered the kind of situations we are in today is amazing.

Apple’s Screen Time has been pretty good by me. I set Safari to an hour and News/Stocks to 15 minutes per day, only allowed after noon, and blocked on the weekend. I still click Give Me Another 15 Minutes but it’s annoying enough that it reminds me why it’s there.

Does Ecobee require an app and account to be activated, or is it something that HomeKit just detects on the LAN?
emchammer··on Apple's Assault on Standards
Safari, iMessage and Lightning are all pretty nice and I like using them. They look and feel better than the rest. Google and Firefox make me feel like I am using a Fischer-Price toy computer. I wish that there was interoperability and that all parties would resolve their differences in good faith.
emchammer··on Israel committing genocide in Gaza, scholars group says

emchammer··on We Ran the CDC: Kennedy Is Endangering Every American's Health
What are you referring to, No Child Left Behind? And why is legitimate conversation so grayed out on this site?
emchammer··on We Ran the CDC: Kennedy Is Endangering Every American's Health
This is terrifying. We can’t handle these generational tantrums.

They’re not, and they can’t, because I don’t use Meta.

Therac-25 is also on the front page right now. I like to reread the reports about that every few years, especially the human effects. Maybe we need formally-verified methods to be more accessible.

The context on this site is often assumed to be American. I consider myself to be multicultural and I'm definitely guilty of that in some of my posts.

There's a lot of misinformation and conspiracy theories about vaccines in the USA in addition to the valid questions which are equally serious. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) is currently run by an individual who has superstitions about them, and is actively dismantling the professional efforts which further vaccination. Even if there was a vaccine available on the medical market in the US, because that is what we have in this country, a market for medical care, it's not clear that it would be accessible to everybody or the people who need it. The reason for this is because Americans do not have universal healthcare, and in fact, the President has recently enacted a law that cuts public healthcare for many millions of Americans, which would provide such a vaccine.

emchammer··on US national debt reaches a record $37T, the Treasury Department reports
Yes, that's roughly what I see. The bottom of the Y axis on this graph is 30% which can be a little deceptive. It looks to me like Clinton and Obama had a terrible challenge in bringing this under control following the early 1980s and the 2008 financial crises and they did what they could, and then there is also Reaganomics. It just looks so hopeless because this figure is as high as it was following the war. Now Biff Tannen's in the White House, and he'll be knocking down walls. I don't think the system was meant to handle human greed on this scale.
emchammer··on US national debt reaches a record $37T, the Treasury Department reports
It looks like it was under control for a while following World War II, but then from the early 1980s, it's hard for me not correlate the first derivative of the slope of that graph with presidential party.
