Design is a function of your content. Start there. Write the content for your website. Edit it. Structure it in logical groups that transition well from one another (story). Once you have that, you can start thinking about visual design as a way to emphasis and give a punch to the meaning of each piece of the story. Don't let yourself get distracted by superfluous design elements you see in a lot of modern website. You might use or two of those, but you might just keep it minimal, focus on good typography and visual hierarchy, and your website will look professional if you master just those few things.

emadabdulrahim··on The contagious visual blandness of Netflix
Stranger Things immediately came to mind when I read the headline. Aside from the amateurish writing and the storyline that quickly became complete non-sense, the look and feel of the show was very much the equivalent of a fast-food chain. Overly saturated colors, everything looks punchy and overly sharp.
emadabdulrahim··on Ask HN: Do you hate software engineering but love programming?
Common sense is dead. Certain groups of people lack self and/or social awareness to notice that they've replaced religion with ideology. For example, we criticize religion for shaming many parts of our sexuality "Welcome to church, you're a sexual being and you should be ashamed". Now that's been replaced with "You're a man, you should feel guilty because you're from the oppressor group." etc.

Welcome to Western society, you're privileged and you should be guilty and ashamed.

How did we get here?

emadabdulrahim··on Life Is Short (2016)
Life is finite. Long or short is all relative and depends on your state of mind.
emadabdulrahim··on I am done. I give up
This made me chuckle.
emadabdulrahim··on How Apple names things
Because Apple is a tech company, but also considered a luxury brand. A watch is mostly a fashionable accessory. iWatch would've been a gadget-first name. Apple Watch sounds much better if you're trying to sell it to fashion aware people, besides people interested in the best tech.

That's my theory anyway. Probably wrong lol.

emadabdulrahim··on Ask HN: What is the best advice you received in 2022?
They way I overcame that is by realizing that working out is essential to my mental health. I wanted to level up my baseline of overall well-being so that my worst days are not that bad. Which means I can bounce quickly from setbacks. Where in the past I'd have recurring periods where find myself spiraling downwards.

Working out keeps me sharp at work which is cognitivly demanding and requires high levels of creativety and problem solving. From that angle, I take it seriously as core part of my day and my identity.

Overtime I started to enjoy doing hard thing in and of itself. Which is changing my life beyond what I could imagine.

emadabdulrahim··on Atom was archived today
I was a noob when Atom was new and I remember thinking it was unusably slow. Took a minute to realize that I had loaded my entire computer's directory, not just the project I was working on.

emadabdulrahim··on Writing by hand is still the best way to retain information
I've recently got into fountain pens and I'm totally in love with the whole experience. Use them for writing, sketching and drawing.

TWSBI is my favorite so far.

Noted. And I agree with you 100%.
emadabdulrahim··on FTX faces potential hack, sees mysterious outflows totaling more than $600M
Apologies if my comment sounded like wishing for someone's death. I promise that was not my intent.

I'm aghast at the magnitude of his disastrous actions and wondering how could someone cope with the situation he put himself in, from a psychological point of view.

emadabdulrahim··on FTX faces potential hack, sees mysterious outflows totaling more than $600M
It's wild to me that he hasn't simply had a heart attack and died from the insanity of his actions and the consequences of it all.

Imagine throwing a life like that and he's barely turned 30. Hubris and foolishness can lead to one's own grave.

edit: I'm not wishing for his death. That's not what my comment was about. More on the psychological impact of deception at this magnitude and could any person cope with that.

emadabdulrahim··on What's new in Svelte: November 2022
Does any body uses Redux these days? For forms, native FormData api covers most of the use cases without the need to manage any state. And for more advanced use cases, React Hook Form is the best https://react-hook-form.com/.

For other types of state management, use:

- react-query: Server cache (api requests and cache results, mutations, etc)

- Zustand of Zotai for actual application state management (only if necessary)

emadabdulrahim··on NightWare helps disrupt nightmares for those with PTSD
I'm not a veteran (though I went through 1.5 year of mandatory service back in my country) but I constantly have nightmares for as long as I could remember. There are nights where I don't want to go to sleep because the night before I had a particularly disturbing nightmare. Remarkably scary dreams.

I'm healthy, exercise nearly ever day. I avoid eating several hours before bedtime.

I was diagnosed with GAD (general anxiety disorder) but I don't take any meds. I'm slowly coming to the realization that my baseline anxiety level is way higher than of the average person. For no apparent reason.

It's frustrating but I'm trying my best to figure out a long term solution.

edit: grammar

emadabdulrahim··on DALL·E API Now Available in Public Beta
Yeah, I prefer Midjourney pricing which is a monthly flat fee with multiple tiers. Unlimited use.

I hope it stays reasonable as they continue to gain traction.

emadabdulrahim··on Remix web framework aquired by Shopify
This is huge. Remix is my favorite React framework at the moment. It is by far the best abstraction I've seen of client/server model. Their API abstraction layer is just right, working with native browser and nodejs APIs, not obscure them. Typescript support is amazing.

I'd bet my money on Remix model and direction vs Nextjs

emadabdulrahim··on How I survived a year in ‘the hole’ without losing my mind
I actually felt some sympathy for the prisoner. He went into Prison at 19. Perhaps he was even younger when he committed murder. WTF does a teenager know about themselves or the world to kill someone?! What kind of awful childhood and upbringing environment did he experience, if any?

Of course he could be a psychopath. Or who knows. I wouldn't presume anything. But I wouldn't be so righteous feeling good about myself for not doing what he did. We're all lucky we didn't have it so bad, be it nature or nurture, or both.

emadabdulrahim··on Meta stock price drops more than 20%
No one wants VR because in its current state it simply sucks and is quite expensive for general adoption.

In the early days no one wanted computers either.

emadabdulrahim··on I help seniors with technology issues
I would actually love to volunteer to help seniors with tech related stuff but I can't for the life of me find an opportunity. I looked online and sign up for different groups but never got a request or email.
emadabdulrahim··on Meta Quest Pro
Because Meta wants to find that hardware product that people would give a shit about. This way they own the software & the hardware.

Meta wants to be Apple.
