em-bee··on Develop Cross-Platform CLI and GUI Tools with Tcl/Tk
the problem with Tcl/Tk is Tcl. the author does write about the quirks and problems, so this is a good article, but the end of it is that Tcl is simply not a language that i am interested in mastering. just like shell scripting. i'll use it if i have to, but it is not my preference.

and as the article also mentions what makes the apps cross platform is the native or near-native GUI. and apparently Tk is good for that.

but i'd rather use a nicer language with it. again, the article does talk about python, and points out that the Tk bindings in python are simply not good enough. that was very insightful, and i am glad to know.

however i would like to know if any other languages do better here. what about go for example? has anyone tried Tk with other languages and can share some experience?

em-bee··on Haiku R1/beta6 has been released
could you point them out? i actually did a search but could not find much. there are GTK themes, but nothing i could find that converts a gnome desktop. stuff is either incomplete or outdated. i actually managed to get half BeOS theme together for KDE, and i still use that on my desktop. but it's inconsistent, and in particular the tab style window management is missing, which is really the best part of the interface.
em-bee··on I am no longer letting Claude Code add itself as Co-author in my commits
i kind of disagree. people do credit the tools they use. in movies for example. not always, but it happens. so why not with software too?
em-bee··on Manifesto – who we are and what do we want (2002)
So labeling yourself an anti-fascist or anti-capitalist does not magically makes you a non-terrorist

nor does the label make a terrorist. it's a neutral statement. the original claim was that the label alone means you support/condone the actions of those who engage in terrorist acts in the name of that label.

em-bee··on You Know GDPR Is Good Based on Who Hates It
google naggs you exactly once.
em-bee··on You Know GDPR Is Good Based on Who Hates It
except the package law as it stands is going to force many small businesses to close because they can't afford the cost.
em-bee··on Manifesto – who we are and what do we want (2002)
islam is not terrorism. christianity is not terrorism.

are you arguing that those statements are false?

because terrorist acts have been done in the name of both.

em-bee··on PPWR lands another blow to an precarious tabletop industry
the article really doesn't have enough details. the different regulations per country are the least of the problem. the real whammy is having to have a representative in each country, which will cost money every year in every country, not just in some. see my other comment: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49485957
em-bee··on PPWR lands another blow to an precarious tabletop industry
they are not just targeting boardgames, but all packages, and the boardgame boxes are also not what is being regulated, but the packaging the box is shipped in.
em-bee··on PPWR lands another blow to an precarious tabletop industry
this article is a bit confusing because it talks about businesses outside of the EU. the PPWR affects businesses within the EU even more. businesses outside have a good chance to get away with ignoring the regulations because the EU will have a tough time to enforce them outside their borders. businesses in the EU however have no chance to escape.

and this isn't just tabletop games. this is any business shipping anything anywhere. even when just shipping a single package in a year. the problem is that compliance costs several hundred dollars per country per year. among other things, a representative needs to be named for each country[1]. those are going to cost money. that means unless you make thousands of dollars in profits in any single country, you can't afford shipping to that country any more.

realistically speaking, this law is so dumb that i expect that we'll see a revision soon, because it effectively destroys the EU single market for small businesses.

there is talk about exceptions for micro-businesses, but for one those seem to be optional, and they may not apply to cross-border shipping which is the big problem here.

[1] i looked it up: https://eur-lex.europa.eu/eli/reg/2025/40/oj/eng

(paragraph 123) when the packaging or the packaged product is made available by means of distance contracts directly to the end user, the producer could also be established in another Member State or in a third country. In such cases, if the producer is established in another Member State, it should appoint an authorised representative for the extended producer responsibility in the Member State where the end user is located.

em-bee··on Luanti removed from Google Play due to baseless AI copyright notice
the DMCA would still apply. they could file a DMCA against f-droid too. while f-droid is more likely to fight back, if the DMCA is upheld, they would have to comply.

you are not wrong, and that's why apple is being forced to allow alternative app stores. forcing them to abandon checks is not what the majority would want. instead eventually there should be ab appstore choice just like the browser choice that was pushed for some time.

em-bee··on Luanti removed from Google Play due to baseless AI copyright notice
interesting interpretation. most other articles on the topic have a different interpretation. if the AI can not be the author, then who can? is writing the prompt enough to establish being the creator? i think we need a few more cases to get an answer to that.
em-bee··on Luanti removed from Google Play due to baseless AI copyright notice
(edit: oh, sorry, i thought you were doubting the quoted text, but you were actually using it as evidence to support your argument. my bad. if you delete your reply, maybe i can delete this comment too)

my old comment for reference:

you doubt what? the claim they are filing is that luanti violates the copyright. that's the point of filing a DMCA notice. that means they are alleging that luanti infringes minecraft’s copyright. what else could it be?

em-bee··on Omarchy development practices lead to predictable security issues
what i meant here is people are criticizing the project or the project leader. that brings drama into the project.
em-bee··on Omarchy development practices lead to predictable security issues
yeah, but with that you are making the whole argument meaningless, because you are arguing that since you can't have life without drama, asking to minimize drama is useless. that's like saying that reducing pollution is useless because you can't eliminate pollution. yes, we can reduce pollution, and we can minimize drama. we can't entirely avoid it, but that was not being asked for.
em-bee··on Omarchy development practices lead to predictable security issues
i doubt you have tried every distribution. at least you haven't tried the one i was part of: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foresight_Linux a small, but independent distribution (not a spin-off of anything). i can assure you, it was drama and asshole free. (maybe it didn't live long enough to develop drama, that would be a fair counterpoint, but other than that, i reject your statement)
em-bee··on Man Dressed as Darth Vader Defends Flock Cameras to San Diego City Council
isn't that the point? to show who is really behind those defending those cameras?
em-bee··on Omacom Foundation launches with $8M
assuming that devs wanting to get paid to work on FOSS are not as demanding, so maybe 100k per year salary would be enough, then that would fund 80 years of one fulltime dev, or 8 years of 10 devs. 4 years of 20 devs. you get the picture. a lot can be done with that. a lot more if you are willing to fund devs in developing countries who can live on a fraction of that.
em-bee··on A Friendly Introduction to Racket

em-bee··on 'Ghost job' ads are getting so bad that lawmakers want to ban them
that is a good looking job board. except i am missing a filter for the type of work, like IT, software, marketing, design, etc. also filtering by industry would be nice. and part-time/contract options. there seems to be a remote filter, but it's a bit confusing how to activate that.
em-bee··on I Am Morally Opposed to Updating My Claude.md
talk to me in all lowercase, like you're a ...

i take offense :-P

but seriously, why waste tokens on instructions that don't help you improve the outcome?

em-bee··on GIMP Development Update
i just realized that since the g in gimp stands for gnu, and the g in gnu should be silent, "imp" might work. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imp

the g in gif stands for graphics, so i could not accept jif as pronunciation and the creators chose it deliberately to match the jif peanutbutter brand, not because there was any logic to it. jimp does not match anything, except chimp maybe.

em-bee··on GIMP Development Update
that would ideally be true, but it takes a lifetime for that to happen. (basically until all people who have experienced gimp as an insult are no longer alive)
em-bee··on Buyer cancels showing after Deflock shows two cameras utilized by the HOA
we are simply using a different definition of public and private. i am using the legal one: public is government, private is everything else. i explained why the distinction matters and what effects it has.

your points are valid but arguing about the definition of what is public isn't helpful.

same goes for government control. you are not wrong, but again, the legal difference in what that control is matters. private entities have constitutional protection and rules that are clearly defined and distinct from the protection and rules for public institutions. the control the government has is simply different and that difference matters.

the bigger reach of municipalities doesn't go away in HOAs because most HOAs are within a municipality. that makes HOAs at best redundant, at worst you have to suffer both. at least with municipality you have democracy on your side. HOAs are controlled by owners, everyone else is second class. that's not a democracy. the result is that the combination of government and HOA gives you less freedom than government alone. HOAs don't replace the government, they don't make it go away.

HOAs in my opinion should be treated like government entities because they are given quasi government like powers without the same checks and balances that government has. they aren't and for me that's a problem.

em-bee··on Buyer cancels showing after Deflock shows two cameras utilized by the HOA
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homeowner_association

A homeowner association is a private, legally-incorporated organization that governs a housing community, collects dues, and sets rules for its residents.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_institution_(United_Sta...

A public institution is a juristic person in the United States which is backed through public funds and controlled by the state.

HOAs are not controlled or funded by the state, no more than Private Businesses are. municipalities are controlled by the state.

if municipalities have the same reach into how people manage their homes like HOAs do then the distinction may not matter. it is however a legally significant distinction.

one point where the distinction matters is that HOAs can limit your freedom of speech, while municipalities can not.

em-bee··on Buyer cancels showing after Deflock shows two cameras utilized by the HOA
the difference is that HOAs are private and not state actors, when they really should be. that has some constitutional implications. they are not democratic because usually only property owners are voting members based on the size of the property. in a municipality everyone living there gets one vote.

you are right that in practice the difference may not be that noticeable, but i believe that not being state actors is a significant distinction. if it acts like a government, and if it quacks like a government it should be a government and be subject to those same rules.

not having a municipality of any kind in my opinion is an oversight of state/federal law. people should have democratic representation whereever they live. HOAs don't provide that.

em-bee··on AI;DR (AI; Didn't Read)
yeah, how about HW;WR? human written, worth reading.
em-bee··on Buyer cancels showing after Deflock shows two cameras utilized by the HOA
HOAs have become defacto governments.

exactly, and they should be forced to operate like one, with democratic elections, and the same checks and balances like any other part of the government.
