elsurudo··on The 2018 Ruby on Rails Survey
Thanks, I forgot about crystal. Now we just need Crystal on Rails :) It would force out some of the magic for sure, but that may be a good thing.
elsurudo··on The 2018 Ruby on Rails Survey
Yes, rails is very pragmatic – it includes a lot of what you need, so you don't end up reinventing the wheel. I like the philosophy still, and the third-part libs (gems) are top-notch.

The problem I have with it now is that I am growing tired of untyped languages. What would a typed & compiled ruby look like? I know some things wouldn't be possible, but if we could keep the philosophy of rails, I think it would still be a great framework.

elsurudo··on Concurrency I can finally understand and write correctly
Important to point out Elixir as well, which is touted as a "more modern" way to write code that runs on the Erlang VM (so you get the same concurrency features, etc.)
elsurudo··on How to write an IRC bot
I already commented on this, but have you tried Colloquy for Mac?

elsurudo··on How to write an IRC bot
For Mac, Colloquy is quite good: http://colloquy.info

Works well, and is a native app that fits well into the general ecosystem.

elsurudo··on Show HN: How we built our interactive demo walk-through
The modern developer's curse... We get better at choosing tools, but worse at building them.
elsurudo··on Show HN: How we built our interactive demo walk-through
Nice – what a simple, elegant solution. Like the others are saying, sometimes there's no need to reach for the heavy toolbox...

How did you measure the effectiveness of having the walkthrough on the front-page? Did you (or did you think about) hooking this up to some analytics? Perhaps see where people tend to drop-off?

elsurudo··on Rails 5.2 (RC1): Active Storage and Beyond
Nice! Active Storage is a welcome addition, as file uploads are used in probably 90% of apps...

Here are the full docs, for anyone interested: http://edgeguides.rubyonrails.org/active_storage_overview.ht...

Worth noting is that direct upload to cloud providers is supported already! Really nice, a crucial feature IMO – I had created my own set of libraries of deal with this in the past, so we'll see how this stacks up.

elsurudo··on Content-aware image resize library
That's really neat!

With my tongue somewhat-in-cheek, I wanted to point you that you may want to be careful with that sample pic of the Eiffel Tower at night!

elsurudo··on Jack White bans phones at gigs for “100% human experience”
The problem with this is that many people have that thing out every other song, recording video, and blinding me.
elsurudo··on Jack White bans phones at gigs for “100% human experience”
Knowing Jack White, not necessarily. He's all about authenticity, and being in the moment. Mobiles (for me) tend to ruin this at a live show.
elsurudo··on Jack in the Box CEO reconsiders automation, kiosks
Maybe, but he was a bit of an idealist and has strong thoughts about how people should and how society should be structured. And the resources to make a noticeable change. HAve you heard of Fordlandia? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fordlândia
elsurudo··on Jack in the Box CEO reconsiders automation, kiosks
Exactly right.
elsurudo··on Jack in the Box CEO reconsiders automation, kiosks
Yeah, but each company just thinks in isolation. It's a bit of a prisoner's dilemma.

elsurudo··on Chrome is Not the Standard
Ehh, I use Safari as my main browser (it feels more "native" than Chrome & FF, has seemingly lower CPU usage than Chrome, and is WAY better for the battery), and I rarely suffer for it. Once in a while there is a site that does something fancy that requires Chrome, but it is rare.
elsurudo··on OpenRailwayMap
Cool! It would be awesome to see the trains moving in real-time (even if it wasn't "live", and just based on posted schedules).
elsurudo··on Parsons code
Cool – I sometimes used a notation like this (the visual form of this) myself to (attempt to) remember melodies I heard on the radio... before Shazam existed
elsurudo··on FCC won’t delay vote, says net neutrality supporters are “desperate”
There is an argument to be made that hijacking the word "freedom" for this was already half the battle for repealing net neutrality. Good luck battling "freedom" in America... If only the other side could have gotten there first.
elsurudo··on Board games are back, thanks to lessons designers learned from computer games
IMO it's a good "first game", but after playing for a while and with someone of similar skill and experience, the strategy is less varied than Catan. The benefit of Carcassonne is you can play with just two people.
elsurudo··on Auto increment is a terrible idea
Ehh, if your main concern if obfuscation of the primary ID, you can... obfuscate your primary IDs to be used in your URLs.
elsurudo··on Show HN: My Personal Website from 1998
This is kind of the answer that I expected, doing some web dev myself. It's sad, isn't it? One would think we would be solving _different_ problems 20 years later...
elsurudo··on The secret world below Chicago
Also related, the abandoned underground shopping mall in Barcelona: http://www.ultraswank.net/stores/avenue-of-light-the-lost-un...

Some amazing pictures... really conveys the mood.

elsurudo··on Show HN: My Personal Website from 1998
Quite impressive for 1998! As someone who's been doing it for so long, what are your feelings about where web tech currently is, and where it is headed? Did you expect it to be farther along at this point? Replaced entirely?
elsurudo··on The citizens of Detroit are building their own Internet
Awesome. Did you guys host gave servers? Or perhaps co-op members? For some reason I remember a lot of game servers with "Speakeasy" in the name – I think this would have been Q2/Q3A/CS1.6 days
elsurudo··on How the sandwich consumed Britain
No kidding, and I am surprised this is the only comment on here pointing this out. This article is really quite sad, except for the small historical tidbits.

It really reminded me of the sad state of affairs that capitalism has brought us to: we are all tugging at the cart in different directions, not really caring which direction it ends up going in. As long as it is _our_ direction – as long as it is us making the money.

elsurudo··on What if the VW Beetle had never existed?
Wow, yeah. That is quite close. The front especially, but the entire shape of the car is similar as well.
elsurudo··on What if the VW Beetle had never existed?
Yeah, this is a much-better comparison than the rather ham-fisted one with Apple squeezed in at the end of the article.
