Sounds fine to me. Maybe depends on your kind of Spanish
elpakal··on Ancient Maya city discovered in Mexican jungle
I remember flying over some parts of Chiapas as a young boy thinking for sure that every mound or hill was an undiscovered temple of some kind, waiting for someone to stumble on. There’s a lot of uncovered magic there, a lot like all of the wild dinosaur bones being accidentally found in the construction debris of booming humanity.

+1. Shout out to its follow up 1493 too.

I feel the same about HOOD. I own some of their stock but every time I see them announce a new crypto product, investment, team, feature etc I cringe. They have coupled themselves and the success of their non crypto products tightly to the success of crypto and I wonder if there will come a time when they try to cut out crypto or if it's too late to do so. I'm holding because I'm hoping they can swing it, but it's been tough to watch because I'm a crypto bear and always have been. I love what they've done with their equity marketplace and their new retirement product seems interesting - but so long as crypto is still around stinking up the place it's hard for me to be a consumer of theirs.
elpakal··on Ask HN: Which mailing lists would you recommend to subscribe to?
I like the Daily Dad - to the point, fun and helpful. I grew up without a father and every little bit helps with 2 young kids during these times.
elpakal··on Why I quit using SwiftUI
well thats good because I didn’t say “you cannot expect”, did I?
elpakal··on Why I quit using SwiftUI
> but at the same time the docs are terribly lacking at how to handle any kind of edge cases.

I agree that Apple’s documentation needs help (this year’s improvements are a nice step) but can we really expect them to provide extensive documentation for handling edge cases (you’re telling me UIKit docs offer that)?

elpakal··on Implementing parts of the Swift compiler in Swift
True and thank you, it just feels a little overkill to bring in a separate package in my CLI apps just to make async network calls.
elpakal··on Implementing parts of the Swift compiler in Swift
Small thing, but I really wish we had URLSession async/await API on Linux Foundation already. I use Swift to write CLI apps and ArgumentParser is awesome with support for async/await, but when it comes to making network calls I always need to remember that's still missing.
elpakal··on Ask HN: I'm in a rut. How did you get out of yours?
+1 on exercise, this helps me when I get down. Not only because I spend time outside and clear my head and feel better after, but also because it helps me meet people. I'm not very social to begin with and even more so when I'm in a rut and I've met a lot of people hiking or running and ended up having a good conversation which helped me.
elpakal··on Ask HN: How to deal with children's online habits?
but it’s not absolutely one or the other. you can be both a friend most of the time but a parent all of the time
elpakal··on GitDB, a distributed embeddable database on top of Git
Isn't there also an environmental cost for all things blockchain because of power consumption? That doesn't directly impact others but might eventually.
elpakal··on GitDB, a distributed embeddable database on top of Git
I'm not on Facebook but from what I hear this is an article you are likely to find on there.
elpakal··on Ask HN: Where and how do you find your early adoptors?
Good advice and something I wish I would have been told earlier.

I went through a YC Startup School session a while back and there was a session about how to get your first customers - I can’t remember who it was (maybe Seibel?), but he (paraphrasing) answered it with something like “why are you building something if you haven’t talked to your customers”. It’s really stuck with me along with the “build something people want” thing.

elpakal··on Improve Git monorepo performance with a file system monitor

elpakal··on Quick fixes to your code review workflow
100%. I’ve found that taking a step back, going on a hike, riding my bike, walking the dog or just doing anything not coding related for a little bit before I go back and review my code really helps me catch things I miss when I don’t take a break. Even better after a night’s sleep. Distance lends perspective and all that.
elpakal··on Apple introduces new professional training to support growing IT workforce
I like the idea of them making app development tutorials, their other SwiftUI one was well done IMHO and this one looks like they put the same amount of thought into it: https://training.apple.com/appdeveloper
elpakal··on I/O 2022
Good point about the keynote - I think that’s why this year’s WWDC is basically just that for in person (++SOTU)
elpakal··on Coinbase warns that bankruptcy could wipe out user funds
Anyone want to invest whatever pennies they get on their Coinbase bankruptcy dollars on a new coin I just thought of? bankruptcoin - any coin exchange leftovers can be converted to coin and yolo’d.

how so?

elpakal··on The Gitlab Team Handbook
I work at a big public company that isn’t a tech company but is trying to do tech things. The Engineering Productivity metrics Gitlab publishes helped us build something similar and justified some pretty large and much needed actions due to the problems the metrics exposed. Really cool they publish stuff like this.
elpakal··on Stanford gets $1.1B for new climate school from John Doerr
In grad school I pursued (at the time it was considered experimental) a minor in "Sustainability Management". This was like 10 years ago and there was nowhere near the amount of stuff happening in the space then as there is now - it was basically "how do we get corporations to reduce their emissions? LOL good luck" and "how do large scale renewable energy projects make it? Only gonna happen with government help". I was a little disappointed with it at the time but I'm really happy that the field has awoken and that tech is getting involved - I would love to see how "higher" education in that space has changed.

> What do your do with a degree in climatology?

I write code, ironically. I'm in the camp that believes degrees aren't _totally_ about what you learn but more about advancing your reasoning and thinking skills and learning how to interact with people (not to say you don't learn anything in school, you definitely do but IMHO it largely depends on what you study).
