The coffee supply chain is one exception imho. There's a market for value-add in the supply chain, I've been amazed to watch the price of specialty coffee keep rising at my favorite roaster.

The comment was about finding the bones below the museum not about the museum being built in an archeological hotbed.

> NVIDIA hardware is widely used for academic and massive computations. Being able to write/test code locally on a Mac and then deploy to super computers would make a good developer experience.

That one stands out to me as a mac user.

Same question, but I'm less clear on how we devs get paid here.

Still hoping someone builds the App Store for custom GPTs where we don't have to worry about payment and user infrastructure. Happy giving up a percentage for that butnot30percentguys.

elpakal··on Acceptable use requirements for the Foundation Models framework

Seems awfully restrictive

elpakal··on Apple announces Foundation Models and Containerization frameworks, etc
Hopefully not bound to SwiftUI like seemingly everything else Apple Intelligence so far. But on-device llm (private) would be real nice to have.

Ive wanted this for years. FWIW I've used CLion's Swift plugin for my pure SPM projects and it's actually decent.
elpakal··on Google AI Edge – on-device cross-platform AI deployment
The generative AI piece is not available in Apple ecosystems right? I think that would be huge and I really hope Apple gives us something similar. And I gotta say the chat piece of this seems really useful too.

Also where the f is Swift Assist already

It will be impossible soon (already almost there) to determine what is real content by real humans and what is AI generated <slop>. Human-to-human experiences will become a priceless commodity.

IMHO

I don't know how true your comment is about them earning money on each GB, but if you're interested in app size analysis on iOS I made this for that reason https://dotipa.app.

I occasionally post decompositions of public .ipa's on the App Store, and I'm looking forward to seeing how these change over the next year.

elpakal··on Show HN: I Built a Tool to Find Devs Based on Code, Not LinkedIn Titles
I agree with most of the sentiment here, and have actually considered building something like this myself. I think the biggest need is to find a way to expose contributions to private repositories somehow—right now, this assumes you are your public commits, which isn't true for people spending the majority of their time inside of private repos.

I know the LinkedIn API is limited but it would also be cool to see a social graph of contributors you have worked with somehow. Finding the people, their titles, and companies would be valuable to see where you level (just imho).

elpakal··on A Vision for WebAssembly Support in Swift
Are you talking about Combine or Async Algorithms? This has been brought up before about Combine, but AA's repo still has some recent commits.
elpakal··on A Vision for WebAssembly Support in Swift
> current Swift tools are barely keeping it together for the “happy path” of building for Apple devices (it’s not that happy)

I agree, but I'm telling myself this is only a temporary pain caused by the changes for supporting Swift 6 language mode. Are you talking about something else?

elpakal··on OpenAI to Become For-Profit Company
> I guess technically it's supposed to play some role in making sure OpenAI "benefits humanity". But as we've seen multiple times, whenever that goal clashes with the interests of investors, the latter wins out.

A tale as old as time. Some of us could see it, from afar <says while scratching gray, dusty beard>. Lack of upvotes and excitement does not mean support, but how to account for that in these times? <goes away>

elpakal··on Ilya Sutskever's SSI Inc raises $1B
Probably will be an unpopular opinion here but I think declining performance is more likely related to unclear business models backed by immature technology driven by large hype trains they themselves created.
