This really shows how long it has been since I've been back home, to Antwerp -- this wasn't there when I was there last. Time to make that trip.

elliottcarlson··on The Creepy Corridors of Video Games
I was surprised how much I actually ended up enjoying watching other people stream their games. I just couldn't grasp why Twitch was so popular, and why people just didn't play the games themselves - until I finally watched some streamers. It's like they were able to box the younger sibling experience -- the older sibling is playing whatever game, and the younger is there watching and enjoying the experience (perhaps with a disconnected controller they can randomly press with no actual outcome). Over the month of October I saw some horror streams as well - and there is something really nice about sharing the jump scares etc with a group of people, even when you aren't playing.

Not everyone will understand that the problem is related to their autofill not behaving properly - it's not too far fetched to think that after trying to submit a few times, that someone would abandon their efforts because the "site isn't working". Probably not as high of a lost revenue as proposed, but I wouldn't doubt it leading to some lost orders.

elliottcarlson··on Browser extensions are underrated: the promise of hackable software
I built http://sublim.nl/crxviewer/ to do exactly that -- load in an extension and view the source, including doing a search through all files.
elliottcarlson··on Org-mode on web, built with React, for mobile, synced with Dropbox, Google Drive
Good to know -- my vim setup has been pretty static for a decade now, I should probably take a peek to see what I can change every once in a while.
elliottcarlson··on Org-mode on web, built with React, for mobile, synced with Dropbox, Google Drive
"Org-mode is a document editing, formatting, and organizing mode, designed for notes, planning, and authoring within the free software text editor Emacs."

In case anyone else wasn't sure what this was, and isn't an Emacs user.

Really off-topic, but this is why I actually miss seeing the upvote score on comments -- without knowing the score, we don't know how popular this opinion is (personally I would love to see a write up on this as well); and since there's no way to see the popularity, we get this chain of people seconding/thirding the statement.
elliottcarlson··on Build your own Mint
This is great -- I'll be tying this in to my budget calendar spreadsheet that I've been using for the last few months to have a solid grasp of how purchases I make will impact me in the future; I have a template with some example usage of it available at https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/12mkQzq22eM8HHdJVJ_Jm... if anyone is interested.

elliottcarlson··on Niantic, developer of Pokémon Go, has acquired Seismic Games
When Pokemon Go was first released, I was really interested in the reverse engineering efforts that were happening - and while I could capture most of the protocol from my house, I was out of range from a stop or a tower. With the help of two phones, a raspberry pi, and a battery pack I was able to make some walks over to the areas, and get additional captures of the protobuf data when interacting in those locations.

The interesting part was more the amount of people that were out and about playing in those areas -- and as you said, they were all interacting and seemingly having a good time. I spoke to a few people (I generally don't venture out much in my own neighborhood), and got to know some of my neighbors in the area. It was pretty interesting to see the bond that playing the game was really producing.

Richard Cory

BY Edwin Arlington Robinson

    Whenever Richard Cory went down town,
    We people on the pavement looked at him:
    He was a gentleman from sole to crown,
    Clean favored, and imperially slim.

    And he was always quietly arrayed,
    And he was always human when he talked;
    But still he fluttered pulses when he said,
    "Good-morning," and he glittered when he walked.

    And he was rich—yes, richer than a king—
    And admirably schooled in every grace:
    In fine, we thought that he was everything
    To make us wish that we were in his place.

    So on we worked, and waited for the light,
    And went without the meat, and cursed the bread;
    And Richard Cory, one calm summer night,
    Went home and put a bullet through his head.
elliottcarlson··on Pull to Refresh.js
Article [1] doesn't mention pull to refresh; Article [2] mentions pull to refresh in the context of email;

There is no dark pattern here; yes social media itself is made to be addicting. Pull to refresh is an intuitive UX pattern that can either assist in enabling the addictive behavior, but it is not the cause of it, not only to be used in that kind of scenario.

elliottcarlson··on Our relationship with teeth is uneven, messy and grim
I have had a long history of dental issues - I can blame so many things for how they got to this state; severe substance abuse two decades ago, homelessness, teeth grinding, GERD. The reality of it though, is that I let my teeth get really bad, and ultimately they were too sensitive to properly take care of - which caused so many more issues. I have spent so much money to attempt to save them over the years, and finally came to the conclusion that they were not worth saving due to the amount of neglect that I had caused them. For years I have mumbled when I spoke to not cause attention to them, and I rarely smiled for the same reasons.

Three days ago I had the remaining 12 teeth pulled and I am currently at home adjusting to dentures - and around the new year I will be looking in to All-on-4 implants. It's truly amazing how much better I already feel about myself for just a few hours of work - and I look forward to the quality of life improvements that I will have. Even with this relief though, there is definitely tons of regrets on how I could let it get this far.

Take care of your teeth - it's worth it.

elliottcarlson··on “Manager READMEs” from some tech companies
I think the publication of these are offering others the opportunity to be introspective of their management styles. While the document I wrote isn't necessarily covering anything I don't already tell and re-affirm to my direct reports, it was a great exercise in thinking through my management style and what it means to me. I hope that the more popular these things become, further conversations can happen in the community to figure out how to help those managers that might need that help, and help organizations identify potential problem areas in their org structures.
elliottcarlson··on “Manager READMEs” from some tech companies
At one time I had multiple teams with 16 direct reports - at that point it was very hard to have a weekly cadence for 1:1's with everyone, as that would've been 8 hours a week. My solution to this was to start with bi-weekly 1:1's, having 8 people scheduled one week, the other 8 the following week. Then each week I had office hours scheduled - this was time dedicated to the team to be able to book my time and was not allowed to be booked for any other meetings - this way people who wanted to meet on an off week could. The second step was determine who could (and wanted) to step up in to management roles - ultimately, this lead to promoting two managers under me, and moving their direct reports to being a monthly skip level 1:1, reducing my overall bi-weekly 1:1's across my part of the org.
elliottcarlson··on “Manager READMEs” from some tech companies
Out of curiosity, did you mention that to them?
elliottcarlson··on “Manager READMEs” from some tech companies
I completely agree - this document is worthless without follow through and accountability; which honestly was my motivation for writing mine. I want my reports, peers and boss to know how I expect to work and hold me accountable to the promises I make - I am not perfect, but the principles I outline is what I strive for.
elliottcarlson··on “Manager READMEs” from some tech companies
I can see it working, up to a point; introducing management can shift how things work overall, but if a company can get away with it, and that's what works for them, then great!

Career progression, walking through or pairing on problems, even personal life topics - remote employees sometimes desire some additional contact as well.
elliottcarlson··on “Manager READMEs” from some tech companies
(I'm one of the managers with a README in the article)

It really depends - I've had direct reports that have had plenty to cover on a weekly basis, and others that don't really have anything new -- the point of the weekly 1:1's is that they have dedicated time whatever they want or need from me - and it's their time to use as they see fit. If they want to skip that week because there's nothing new on their side, that's fine (but not every week), and if they are done in 10 minutes that's fine too. Other people have wanted closer to 2 hours a week of 1:1 time. It really comes down to the individual.
