elliottcarlson··on Top-Left Magic Corner Desktop Paradigm
Ultrawide monitors (I'm using the 49" Samsung Odyssey G9 at 5120x1440) would also suffer from having a taskbar on a side of the screen -- I currently have my Windows bar at the top of the screen, but honestly, the MacOS dock might be the best usability route for this monitor setup to keep things nice and centered.
elliottcarlson··on Show HN: Open-source clones of popular sites (Airbnb, AMZ, Instagram, etc.)
A lot of broken links, and some are not actual product clones; e.g. the Twitch clone seems to be for a job interview challenge to clone the front-end site functionality.

elliottcarlson··on At Xamarin I left every day at 5pm
42, and learned the hard way as well -- it has serious ramifications both on your personal physical and mental health, as well as your relationships. I get more out of my team by treating them as humans that I know have a life outside of work; I want them to have a healthy work life balance, and I will lead by example.
elliottcarlson··on NYC to require salary ranges be included in job postings
Low - Mid - High range isn't uncommon, it's just not as common to see it on a job-listing. Generally you expect someone who is solid in their level to have a compa ratio of 100%, which puts you near the mid part of the band. When you are newer to the level, you would be aligned closer to the low end of the band, and as you progress and near a promotion, you would be edging towards the higher end.
elliottcarlson··on How fateful?
I recall a road trip with my father (this is at least 30 years ago), where we went to see my grandfather a few states away. As we drove through some small rural town, we were tailed by the local police for quite some time until we hit the county line and they simply turned around -- my dad told me at the time that they must have been following us to see if they could find a reason to pull us over. As I grew up, and started driving myself, I believe that to have been the case. Quotas for tickets and arrests are definitely a problem in the US.
elliottcarlson··on It's easier to manage four people than one
There is a sweet spot of amount of reports, where a manager is able to handle the projects and the performance of the individuals -- once you hit the 8 people mark, you should be looking in to splitting the team up - the manager could delegate and mentor a jr manager to take on a part of the team, etc. But 14 is too much.
elliottcarlson··on Librarian's Letter to Google Security
good point, didn't think of that!
elliottcarlson··on Show HN: SnoopForms – Open-Source Typeform Alternative
I took his response to be that of uncertainty, and asking if it was related to the (definitely inappropriate) Elon reference. Your response is coming across just as hostile, as is the top-level comment you posted. There are other ways you could have approached both of these comments.
elliottcarlson··on Librarian's Letter to Google Security
Walking through a drive-thru probably becomes an insurance and liability risk; and depending on local laws, it might be seen as a pedestrian entering traffic.
elliottcarlson··on Source code for 4kb demoscene production “Elevated” released (2016)
Source code can also be viewed online via https://madethisthing.com/iq/Elevated , which is a platform made by one of the demo developers to share code.
elliottcarlson··on Cats learn the names of their friend cats in their daily lives
My cat definitely has different sounds for different behaviors -- the most interesting one is when I leave the house and he didn't see me leave, I will get a notification from my nest cam that it thought it heard someone speaking, which will be my cat making a guttural sound that sounds eerily like "hello?" - he will sometimes do this if he can't find me in the house.

A second distinct meow he makes is when he is able to sneak past the baby gate to run down the stairs to the front door -- I call this his "see ya, sucker" meow.

elliottcarlson··on Ask HN: How do I Stop Living Paycheck to Paycheck?
For a high cost of living area such as New York, with a family to support, it is unfortunately very low - couple that with their title and years of experience, it is just factual compared to the market that they could be earning near double. At $110k a year, you are looking at a $6k monthly take home; over 1/3rd of that is going to the mortgage OP posted, and they have three children. Once you add insurance, groceries, and other obligations (such as perhaps a car + insurance), it becomes very easy to fall in to the paycheck-to-paycheck life.

Yes, $110k is a lot of money, but it quickly disappears depending on where you live - for perspective, based on cost of living, this would be equivalent of earning $41k a year in Kansas City, KS/MO, or $37k in Birmingham AL -- cost of living plays a huge factor, and not accounting for that is the actual loss of sense and perspective.

elliottcarlson··on Interview questions to ask your interviewer
A question I like to ask, and have gotten some great answers to, is:

> If there was anything you could change about <company>, whether or not it is in your control, what would it be?

It has been effective in getting an idea of some of the problems that might exist organizationally - it might not be the worst things, but there's always something.

elliottcarlson··on APKTool: A tool for reverse engineering Android APK files
I wrote a script a few years back to automate decompiling, and weaving in code in to an APK, then recompiling it using a recipe type structure -- https://github.com/elliottcarlson/Otto -- kind of abandoned it sadly, but figure it's worth sharing in case anyone has value in it.
elliottcarlson··on Improving GitHub Code Search
De-duping exact matches is a game changed -- search has been miserable to use because of the dupes for so long. I can live with near-similar documents. Very excited to test this out.
elliottcarlson··on Ask HN: What was your experience like moving from an IC to a manager role?
I had an IC who was interested in moving to a team lead role and had mentioned that during their interview process. We agreed to give them 6 months and then revisit the conversation -- when we spoke about it again, the IC said that they had changed their mind, because there were people smarter than them on the team. My advice is that you don't need to be the smartest engineer to be a lead or manager, but you should be able to identify them, and help them grow.
elliottcarlson··on Ask HN: As a new SaaS business, how do you find your first 10 paying clients?
> These 10 clients, are also the ones that are going to allow me to raise capital from a VC.

Be careful -- that is a common(?) way for VCs to also say no -- "come back when you have 10 clients" which next time becomes "come back when you have 50 clients" and it goes on forever. Not saying that is the case here, but, don't put all your eggs in one basket that you will be ready to raise when you have 10 clients.

elliottcarlson··on The Iridium Museum
I worked on the Iridium website (via an agency I worked at) in 2001 -- it was quite the upgrade from their old site at the time, but still had the narrow, center aligned design of the 90's. Unfortunately that homepage remained their homepage for almost 6 years after that.
elliottcarlson··on ASCII Play
I made a similar feature as a Tumblr post type during an internal hackathon -- shame that never got to see the light of day as a production feature. Processing post types, that allowed others to reblog and make revisions. Would've been painful to get it ready for a mobile release unfortunately.
elliottcarlson··on Bob's Game
Terry Davis was diagnosed with schizophrenia; has passed away in 2018.
elliottcarlson··on Things I wish someone told me about getting a promotion
> Total BS too. Maybe in India.

That was unnecessary -- this is something that is indeed an expectation in _some_ career ladders -- it's not a global truth, but nothing is.

While the author made generalized claims and absolutes, so did you to the contrary - when the reality is always "it depends on who you are, and who you report to". Claiming total BS is probably more harmful in this case.

elliottcarlson··on Is this what enterprise means?
I had complained about LaserShip _so_ many times, and asked them to ban them as a last mile delivery provider - it took a while but finally happened (or, their own delivery vans just became more accessible in the area)

elliottcarlson··on Just Wanted to Say Thanks
A game developer released their game as open source after the Steam discovery algorithm killed traffic to their game [1]. It was nice to see a thank you on their GitHub [2], and I recommend people try to support developers with both gratitude, and when possible financially if it is a project that truly helps you.

elliottcarlson··on Investigating the Milk, MIT's Historic Dairy Product (2015)
In 2014 a friend made a joke Kickstarter (I guess in response to the Potato Salad Kickstarter campaign) where he would make a PB&J sandwich, vacuum seal it, and mail it to you.

I still have it at the bottom of my freezer, vacuum sealed. Some day he will randomly get it back in the mail.
