elliotpage··on For more and more people, work appears to serve no purpose
I can understand that explanation, but equally it would be a lot more healthy all around if there was better toleration of these trivial mistakes. People are people, not perfect content robots.
elliotpage··on Show HN: Find maintained forks of your favorite GitHub repos
This is cool, but one thing that may be useful is a "last commit" instead of "Last Update". Explaining what is looked at for "last update" that would be great too. Some repos that I follow that are very dead have a very recent "last update" as they are still hammered by people due to being high up in search engine results and linked to from lots of places.
elliotpage··on Juicero founder defends machine
The product is expensive, extraneous, bad at what it does, easily circumvented, and the reaction to it by the CEO and investors is hilarious and a very good look at the absurdities of the current app-and-hardware world we have found ourselves in.

People love a good laugh, and some Schadenfreude helps. Whats not to like?

elliotpage··on Does Science Advance One Funeral at a Time?
Given that new ideas in a field often get reviewed by incumbents in said field (due to the requirements of pre-publication peer review) this can certainly delay their uptake or even full examination.

This kind of ingrained conservatism can delay progress both of a field and those examining it. It is a catch-22 as you want qualified reviewers to examine a paper so it isn't bunkum but equally those reviewers may slow it down because it is a valid advance in contrary to their position.

Perhaps a move to post-publication peer review and greater pre-print deposition would help, but that would take a deep cultural shift.

elliotpage··on The findings of medical research are disseminated too slowly
Any OA publisher worth their salt offers a fee waiver program, and the expectation from Day 1 of OA has been that these costs should be baked into grant applications and funding requests. Many funding bodies and institutions take care of this for you, having OA funds and assistance available to take care of OA fees and to help direct publishing scientists to non-predatory publishers (Elsevier in particular can charge obscene OA fees, giving OA in general a bad name, which works to their benefit!)and also pick up the tab.
elliotpage··on Librarian removes controversial list of "predatory" journals and publishers
While this is true on its face, any OA publisher worth their salt offers a fee waiver program, and the expection from Day 1 of OA has been that these costs should be baked into grant applications and funding requests. Many funding bodies and institutions take care of this for you, having OA funds and assistance to take care of OA fees and to help direct publishing scientists to non-predatory publishers (Elsevier in particular can charge obscene OA fees)and also pick up the tab.

As such, it is very unusual for a Submitting author to have to pay an OA charge.

COI statement: I used to work for an OA-only publisher, but have not been employed there for the last 2 years.

elliotpage··on An Analysis of Anonymity and Ephemerality in 4chan /b/ (2011) [pdf]
/jp/ was made expressly so it could be forgotten about, which works out for both sides.
elliotpage··on Tech Talent: How the UK lost six potential titans
No, please don't! Property prices are too high already!
elliotpage··on PiBakery – a blocks based, easy to use setup tool for Raspberry Pi
From the downloads page: > Please note that both the Mac and Windows version are very large, as they contain Raspbian, the Raspberry Pi operating system. Therefore these downloads may take some time to download, depending on the speed of your internet connection.

Perhaps overload, but there you go!

elliotpage··on Tricks to Monetize Your Side Projects
Agreed. Whenever a service does this to me I immediately turn off any further messages and seriously re-evaluate using it. I strongly dislike this kind of messaging, which is exacerbated as a lot of services follow the exact same pattern!
elliotpage··on BlackBox
Tried to give this a go (It sounds cool and shipping that scales is a massive pain) but the $5 press kit has $33 shipping to the UK! Guess this won't be solving my shipping problems after all.
elliotpage··on ‘Worms’ or bust: Britain’s most tenacious indie games company
I'm glad the article mentions the lawsuit Team17 brought against Amiga Power, but could really gave gone into this in greater depth- this is a fascinating point in gaming history. It had a much bigger impact than effecting just one (admittedly large) Magazine.
elliotpage··on Play Store and Android Apps Coming to Chromebooks
But chromebooks already have lots of offline apps? They have been available for the majority of the Chromebooks' lifespan at this point.
elliotpage··on GitHub responds to Dear GitHub letter
I just hope they also add new features centering around depreciation of repos and the ability to add a "THIS IS NO LONGER BEING MAINTAINED" flag or an equivalent.

Finding a repo that appears to solve my problems only to find a mass of issues and an absent maintainer is a pretty big time sink, for both me and likely the maintainer too!

elliotpage··on A Day at the Stupid Shit No One Needs and Terrible Ideas Hackathon
Sounds like it would be right at home at the Stupid Hackathon then, hyuck hyuck
elliotpage··on The Villain of CRISPR
He is also a firebrand who does not care who he upsets, which works for both good and ill. (I have worked with Mike before, although in a distant capacity.) This explains why he can sometimes appear highly quixotic.
elliotpage··on Redesigning Chrome Android. Part 1 of 2
Its nice of them to dive into their decision to redesign the tab switcher, and I utterly disagree with their reasoning. "Merge tabs and apps" is something I turned off right away and something my non-tech-savvy android using friends constantly ask me for help in disabling.
