elliotec··on Supreme Court upholds TikTok ban, but Trump might offer lifeline
Where in that link does it mention that? I read through the whole thing, and what I saw is wildly lower than you said.
elliotec··on Supreme Court upholds TikTok ban, but Trump might offer lifeline
This is simply not true. Even standard German is a second language in Switzerland. I’m Swiss.
elliotec··on Show HN: Convert your LinkedIn profile to a resume
The parent isn't being sarcastic about it being underhanded; they're implying that "AI-Enhance Professional Writing" and "enhanced content" regarding LLMs rewriting your resume isn't necessarily desirable, especially at the expense of losing control of your data.
elliotec··on Show HN: Convert your LinkedIn profile to a resume
Is this better than the "save to pdf" feature on your profile in LinkedIn?
elliotec··on What Is Software Anyways? Where Does It Exist?
I hear you that the end result is the software product, but what I'm saying is there are a lot of middle steps and grey area that could also be argued to be "software."

In other words, I think I was trying to say I simply disagree with, or don't understand the point of the article due to the massive nuances.

Also, yes, I love quines. And they're a great example of a nuance I'm conveying here.

elliotec··on What we know about CEO shooting suspect
It's the healthcare industrial complex. Just like the military. You get back some percentage of what you charge. They're incentivized to charge more because they'll get more, and sometimes it's an all-or-nothing.

I have doctor friends who quote they spend over 60% of their time dealing with insurance and it's intricacies. It's the fault of the system, with large foundations on insurance and perverse government policy to enrich the leaders therein, and the providers are simply making do with the system they must operate in.

I'll never forget the story I heard about a military squadron that needed like one bolt to fix a relatively important piece of equipment, and it cost like $10 itself.

But the only way they could get it was through a package deal of a million dollars of other insane amounts of equipment that was entirely superfluous and they ended up getting shitloads too many guns and threw away thousands of hardware bits just to get that one screw.

Similar systems at play here.

elliotec··on What we know about CEO shooting suspect
I _think_ what you're getting at is saying the suspect wants the credit, in response to the parent saying the next one will be better at evasion by learning from his mistakes, right? And implying the next one might not want to evade either? I have no speculation here just looking for clarification on the movie reference.
elliotec··on What Is Software Anyways? Where Does It Exist?
What about the product of the instructions? Or as another commenter said, the runtime execution? Which of those is more “software” than the other and what does it make the other?

Seems reasonable to believe the thing happening due to the instructions is on another level of “abstract artifact” corroborating the point despite semantic nuances.

elliotec··on Starlink Direct to Cell
Or, like, any space outside of a dense city :D
elliotec··on MailCatcher runs a super simple SMTP server
I've been using Mailcatcher for dev on a rails app that... well, sends mail sometimes. It has been so incredibly easy to use and run, and I can't imagine needing anything else than what it has. Thanks @sj26 and collaborators!
elliotec··on iPhone Mirroring at work may expose employees’ personal information
I’d say generally for most people, at least anecdotally, their work laptop is their only laptop because they’re expensive and have good specs. Especially for Apple products (which is the majority of the share of hardware in this anecdote), it’s natural to want and expect the continuity between devices.

Employers usually allow this or don’t explicitly forbid it, and most employees aren’t exactly security conscious or willing to sacrifice convenience. So it’s not that shocking to me, but it is weird that there isn’t more education or rules around it.

elliotec··on Nearly all of the Google images results for "baby peacock" are AI generated
Fair, sorry, thanks.
elliotec··on Nearly all of the Google images results for "baby peacock" are AI generated
They want money, they’re riding the hype wave, not advancing anything and I’m sure most or all know it.
elliotec··on Ask HN: What's the "best" book you've ever read?
The Dawn of Everything, GEB, and House of Leaves are probably my top 3.
elliotec··on Gen AI Makes Legal Action Cheap – and Companies Need to Prepare
They have large bank accounts because of their scale. You’re adding to the parent’s case.
elliotec··on Behind OpenAI's plan to make A.I. flow like electricity
It's all part of the Sam plan to make as much money as possible before whatever happens next.
elliotec··on The White Collar Apocalypse Is Nigh
How much do you know about "the world"? That's a serious generalization. Lots of cities out there, lots of people.

Maybe it's the systems that prevent us from seeing their efforts.

elliotec··on MicroPython on Flipper Zero
And with the latest firmware, can't even do the badge doubling :/
elliotec··on MicroPython on Flipper Zero
That's exactly what happened to mine. They nerfed it real hard early on and killed almost all actual utility of it.

You can still find earlier firmware versions that do the old thing but you have to hack the hell out of anything to make it useful.

elliotec··on How to succeed in MrBeast production (Leaked PDF)
It does make it net-bad because the educational content should exist without the trash, which is far more prevalent. It forces the positive stuff to comply with the trash algorithms that make them worse and also forces them to comply with the monopoly of one of the largest, most monolithic corporations in the world that can do whatever the fuck they want with the content. Of course it's not surprising! It's just shitty and needs to be different.
elliotec··on How to succeed in MrBeast production (Leaked PDF)
Fair, it wasn’t clear to me that you meant “skipped writing about it” - I thought you were just some rando that was commenting on something that they skipped over reading in the article (which I now understand you wrote). Sorry for the misunderstanding!
elliotec··on How to succeed in MrBeast production (Leaked PDF)
A reward does not need to come from “someone”, and usually doesn’t.

You should expect reward from dedication because you’ll get it. Not from some god on high or some random person called Tyler Smith. It’s from yourself or the fruits of your labor.

elliotec··on How to succeed in MrBeast production (Leaked PDF)
You didn’t spot the relationship with the “no doesn’t mean no” stuff because as you said in the next sentence, you skipped it. Nice one.
elliotec··on How to succeed in MrBeast production (Leaked PDF)
This is not how YouTube, or people, or virality work though.

The fact there is some useful educational content is a byproduct of the machine of lucrative trash of the capitalist hellhole spiral, and the written word will always prevail comparatively. You can always bet on text. https://graydon2.dreamwidth.org/193447.html

Also, as you likely know, YouTube is owned by Google so it’s very silly to say it’s “more important.”

elliotec··on Kill the Newsletter: Convert email newsletters into Atom feeds
This doesn't appear to be a product marketed to "moms." But it also isn't clear how it works at all for a "power user" like me.
elliotec··on The real "Wolf of Wall Street" sales script
I'm 100% the same. I'm an engineering director at a tech company so basically one of my top strengths is ignoring sales attempts.

That said, during university I worked for the development center of the school (fundraising) at the Phonathon (alumni cold-call center) and rose the ranks to the top donation earner and then supervisor.

I had a memorized script with branching IF statements all the way down and brought in hundreds of thousands to different departments at the university. This type of thing absolutely works. Especially on older generations in departments that made more money.

Pity party calls were the easiest. Medical school alumns that were inching toward retirement reaaaally go for the "we don't have enough doctors for our population, help" angle.

elliotec··on Everything that turned out well in my life followed the same design process
This is great advice to people who DO have a job that takes up "all their time." Find ways to do things you enjoy; maybe eventually, it even leads to a job you might like more or that takes up less time so that you can continue pursuing the things you like.
elliotec··on Everything that turned out well in my life followed the same design process
How much of that do you think was by following his "design" vs just luck and privilege falling into his lap? I think that's the point he's getting at, but I don't know his backstory and I don't see where you gleaned that from this post.
elliotec··on PSA: Internet Archive "glitch" deletes years of user data and accounts
Contrary to popular belief, it’s not turtles all the way down.
elliotec··on Mapping Hacker News to find who knows what in the HN community
Just because an individual has the right, doesn't mean the other entities have the means or desire.
