eliaskg··on Show HN: Hacky – Hacker News app for Mac
Awesome feedback! It's noted and will be investigated as soon as I have time ;)
eliaskg··on Show HN: Hacky – Hacker News app for Mac
I wanted to use http://api.ihackernews.com but I found that it was very unreliable. So I built my own.

There already are really great apps for iOS.

If you want a native one, check out https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/news-yc/id434787119?mt=8

If you prefer a web app take a look at http://hackerwebapp.com

eliaskg··on Show HN: Hacky – Hacker News app for Mac
I will, as soon as I have figured out how to implement that with the minimal look ;)

Thanks for the info! Should be fixed. Chrome (somehow) handeled the media queries differently.

Hi, app developer here. I hope some of you may like my little app. To prevent too much ranting here are some quick answers to possible questions:

Q: The Hacker News website provides much more functionality than your app.

A: That's right. The app isn't made to replace the Hacker News website. It's made for frequent readers like me who want a quick and friendly-on-the-eye way to access the stories.

Q: I want your app but I don't want to pay for it.

A: No problem, Hacky is open source! Just get a copy of the source on GitHub and build it on your machine.

Q: Why are you then charging money for it in the first place?

A: Personally I like getting my apps via Mac App Store. It means easy updating and restoring. Unfortunately providing an app in the MAS isn't free for the developer as he has to purchase a Developer Certificate from Apple. (Additionally a developer likes to buy a beer from time to time)

Very useful! Instead of "optically scanning" all the first level comments I can collapse each comment after reading.

eliaskg··on Show HN: Meteor, a realtime JavaScript framework
First of all, the project is great! I think many of us have always dreamed of developing for the web in this way.

I also think they have to try to solve the "API Problem" at some point. Mobile apps are native and they will remain native for some time. Nobody wants to implement a web app with Meteor and re-write an API in a traditional manner.

But nevertheless this is a very interesting piece of work and I am thrilled to hear about updates!

Works in every browser that supports 3d transforms, namely the latest versions of Chrome, Firefox, Safari (+ Mobile)

This is just awesome! Great work!
eliaskg··on Angry Birds in space
Awesome! This feels like, hey, an astronaut isn't an isolated individual living far away from us anymore. It feels more like he got a call from Rovio if he could do a video for advertising and said "Well why not? I put it in my Dropbox"
eliaskg··on Ask HN: anyone using atlassian's "unlimited free git/hg hosting"?
I tired ist for small personal projects. Works quite well, it's even possible to use GitHub's Mac app. The web app features (issues, source, etc) are not quite as good as GitHub. But since it's free it is a quite good alternative if you need free private repos.
eliaskg··on Show HN: Piqtur, a wep app for enhancing your images with beautiful effects
The source isn't that interesting. It just was a lot work ;)

But http://www.cappuccino.org is a good starting point.

eliaskg··on Show HN: Piqtur, a wep app for enhancing your images with beautiful effects
If you scroll down on the main page you can see a list of open source libs I used.
eliaskg··on Show HN: Piqtur, a wep app for enhancing your images with beautiful effects
That's interesting, I never had any quality loss with my images. Maybe you could send me your original image so I could investigate that.

All effects except the 3d perspective are rendered via canvas in the client's browser. After that the image gets sent to the server which adds the perspective (if needed) and sends out the download.

eliaskg··on Show HN: Piqtur, a wep app for enhancing your images with beautiful effects
I understand your thought. Yes, the image is sent to the server for several reasons:

1. Perspective. The app is able to render all effects in the client's browser except for the 3d perspective. This is made on the server side

2. Download. Since I want to give the user a "native" download, the only way to do this is with a server.

If it would be possible to render (quality) 3d transformations in canvas and to send out a download I event wouldn't need a server for processing the image.

eliaskg··on Ask HN: 5-digit alphanumeric or 12-digit integer simpler and more secure?
I think the question is not password related as the key may be used as a UID for a "semi restricted" link.
eliaskg··on Ask HN: 5-digit alphanumeric or 12-digit integer simpler and more secure?
That would be 10e12 vs 60.466.176. Pretty easy from the security pov.

Also if an alphanumeric string should be entered / remembered by humans make sure to strip I, l, etc.

eliaskg··on If you're using Node.js, you're doing life wrong
What's the problem if someone creates great stuff with it?
eliaskg··on Why does that QR Code go to justinsomnia.org?
I made the experience that it's never a good idea to point a QR code to a fixed domain. Always create a little redirect app where you can define later on what target the link should point on.

So for example point the link to http://mysite.com/qr

where you have a little redirection-php file that you can edit at all time.
