elevatedastalt··on Google must open Android for third-party stores, rules Epic judge
So it's better to be bad than to try to be good and fail?
elevatedastalt··on Google must open Android for third-party stores, rules Epic judge
The clusterfuck of the media universe is actually _because_ of monopoly. But it's not monopoly on UX, it is monopoly on the content.

If you want to watch the Lion King, Disney has your balls in a vice grip.

I would be perfectly fine with a hundred different UXes, if they could all serve me Lion King and I had an option to pay for it. Then it would be an actual decentralization. A syndicated system where I can access a movie or song on any platform (of my choice), and the copyright holder gets paid appropriately would be an approach most people in the tech savvy community would be happy with.

For all the noise journalists and the justice department make about big tech, there is basically ZERO action taken about the monopolization of IP that media houses indulge in.

What users wanted: One streaming service from where you can stream or rent any movie or show available in the world.

What users got: 1000 streaming services each with their app and UX that is shitty in a slightly different way from the other, and with a catalog that keeps changing unpredictably.

Then why is there one result for Google and the opposite one for Apple?
elevatedastalt··on Amazon tells employees to return to office five days a week
And go where?
elevatedastalt··on Amazon tells employees to return to office five days a week
> Amazon pays well, but will work you like a dog.

Ironically dogs live pretty royal lives in America.

elevatedastalt··on Apple must pay 13B euros in back taxes, EU's top court rules
What's funny is America has some of the longest paths to a Green Card (for Indians and Chinese at least), but is very very happy to tax them as a resident the moment they spend a year in the country.

Indians effectively pay taxes as residents without any permanent residency benefits for decades

elevatedastalt··on Google loses EU court battle over €2.4B antitrust fine
More like another reason to stop doing business in the EU.
elevatedastalt··on Fears children born during lockdown are years behind as they start at school
I mean they can at worst be only 4 years behind
elevatedastalt··on NASA's Starliner decision was the right one, but it's a crushing blow for Boeing
You are free to disagree with them. For what it's worth I think they are genuine. But either way they have been very clearly and explicitly communicated, and are anything but "ulterior".
elevatedastalt··on Study: Air purifier use at daycare centres cut kids' sick days by a third (2023)
Hardly anyone even thinks about peanut allergies in a nation of 1.4 billion people (India) and kids don't drop dead like flies here.

But sure, let's just call the hygiene hypothesis tenuous.

elevatedastalt··on Study: Air purifier use at daycare centres cut kids' sick days by a third (2023)
Could this be combined with masks for greater efficacy?
elevatedastalt··on NASA's Starliner decision was the right one, but it's a crushing blow for Boeing
"Ulterior motives" is misleading terminology, trying to give a negative color to ambitions that Elon has always made very very explicit—making humans a space-faring civilization and colonizing Mars.

You may disagree with how useful these ambitions are, but calling them ulterior is basically outright deception.

elevatedastalt··on Postmortem of my 9 year journey at Google
The key is to move out of the bay area as soon as you have a 2M net worth.
elevatedastalt··on Postmortem of my 9 year journey at Google
It's great that it is terminal, but both comp and the respect you get in the company is strongly affected by level, so it's hard to just sit at L5 while you watch your peers rise the ranks
elevatedastalt··on Postmortem of my 9 year journey at Google
Please tell me how you think Boq is killing the company.
elevatedastalt··on Australia starts peanut allergy treatment for babies
That was my thought too. I am sure his allergy was serious, but this story is entering homeopathic levels of dilution and delusion.
elevatedastalt··on SF's Historic Preservation Rules Are in Limbo, All Part of CA's Push for Housing
I think the more accurate representation is that it's coming from people who _want_ to live in SF but currently don't (due to lack of housing or unaffordable housing). Should I be allowed to push for policy changes in a city I am not a resident of?
elevatedastalt··on How Olympics officials try to catch “motor doping”
I mean we are talking of an overrated "energy drink" that no one actually needs to consume but yet manages to sell billions of dollars worth of every year.

I don't think their target market is that susceptible to reason.

elevatedastalt··on Open source AI is the path forward
No, we need to adapt an existing term into the new context that it is being deployed in.
elevatedastalt··on Why Delta is still canceling flights as other airlines return to normal
Feels like a very specific anecdote. There is no reason Spirit planes won't smell or United planed always will.
elevatedastalt··on The Mafia of Pharma Pricing
> So yes, while the list price for Gleevec has gone up, the actual price paid is very different.

You say it like it's a good thing. It's part of the problem.

The fact that there is no clear no-nonsense to get a drug at a reasonable price without jumping through a bunch of hoops which aren't even clearly documented is not a good thing.

We are talking of life-saving drugs here, not hacking frequent flier miles or credit card rewards.

elevatedastalt··on Goldman Sachs: AI Is overhyped, expensive, and unreliable
> The hype follows what OpenAI's latest release does though

Yes, because what OpenAI releases today helps us improve the prediction of what it may release in a decade or so.

elevatedastalt··on Goldman Sachs: AI Is overhyped, expensive, and unreliable
The slope has changed between 10 years and ago.

You are free to disagree, but don't pretend like you don't understand what the AI crowd is saying.

elevatedastalt··on Ask HN: What is the best code base you ever worked on?
While Google is a monorepo, that doesn't mean that every part of the codebase is equally critical.

People don't yolo submit CLs to core library components for example.

OTOH submitting somewhat hacky code to a new project while you iterate on it doesn't harm the rest of the code base that much since very little will depend on it.

elevatedastalt··on Canada 'sleepwalking' into cashless society, consumer advocates warn
Empirical evidence can suggest anything you want it to if you choose to ignore empirical evidence that's inconvenient to you.

The Canadian trucker protesters were not "terrorists" by any stretch of imagination, but sure let's assume otherwise because it helps us sleep better at night, right?

elevatedastalt··on Canada 'sleepwalking' into cashless society, consumer advocates warn
You will find out how easily you can wire money to someone in the EU if you decide to hold political opinions that are not in line with the ruling elite.

The truckers in Canada for sure found out how "free" the digits of their bank accounts were.

Russian oligarchs for sure found it out in 2022.

elevatedastalt··on Ask HN: What is the best code base you ever worked on?
He is referring to the codebase itself, not individual projects or CLs.
elevatedastalt··on Ask HN: What is the best code base you ever worked on?
Huh? Facebook has a lot of that infra because ex-Googlers built it there. It takes an insane amount of delusion to notice something common between a father and a son and say that the dad inherited it.
