elevaet··on We have reached the "severed fingers and abductions" stage of crypto revolution
If they don't cash out directly to an off-ramp there might not be a way to connect a crypto address to a person. If they use the crypto to buy illegal shit and sell that on the black market for cash - or sell the crypto directly on the black market for cash, they could evade detection.

I wonder how much crypto is changing hands off-market in shadier corners.

elevaet··on We have reached the "severed fingers and abductions" stage of crypto revolution
I had a similar experience, and also have zero regrets about missing out on gains. The baked-in energy wastage and the scams and memes were a complete turnoff. That's not the way I want to get rich. Similarly I wouldn't invest in an arms manufacturer or a plastic bag company. Money that doesn't align with your values is just bad mojo.

> The researchers even found a pair of close relatives (ca. second cousins) bridging the Mediterranean, one buried in a North African Punic site and one in Sicily.

This is from over 2500 years ago. How amazing is that, that we have this capacity in DNA analysis now to discover details like this from so long ago?

elevaet··on Why can't HTML alone do includes?
Also even if you do have good practices of semantic tagging, there are huge epistemological problems around taxonomies - who constructs them, what do the terms actually mean, how to organize them and so on.

In my experience trying to work with wikidata taxonomies, it can be a total mess when it's crowdsourced, and if you go to am "expert" derived taxonomy there are all kinds of other problems with coverage, meaning, democracy.

I've had a few flirtations with the semantic web going back to 2007 and long ago came to the personal conclusion that unfortunately AI is the only viable approach.

elevaet··on Here's how to get ChatGPT to stop being an overly flattering yes man
This is excellent, thank you.

I'm realizing I'm also really annoyed with the suggestions at the end of an answer like:

"Would you like me to quickly do X? It's [teaser sentence to try to entice more engagement]"

elevaet··on Here's how to get ChatGPT to stop being an overly flattering yes man
Perhaps you could share your custom instructions? Omitting anything actually personal of course..
elevaet··on Here's how to get ChatGPT to stop being an overly flattering yes man
This is something that's been bothering me lately, it seems like ChatGPT really upped the "yes man" personality lately.

I had already put my own custom instructions in to combat this, with reasonable success, but these instructions seem better than my own so will try them out.

I remember a time when using <div> tags was considered a sign of "expensive" to some.
elevaet··on LLM-powered tools amplify developer capabilities rather than replacing them
This is the real reason why it's an amplifier and not a replacer.
elevaet··on Decreased CO2 during breathwork: emergence of altered states of consciousness
This is a bit off topic, but what do you think about people doing nitrous recreationally? It's always concerned me that people are inhaling close to pure nitrous oxide and holding it in. I've always wondered if this creates damaging low-oxygen conditions without the normal reflexes kicking in, and if this can cause brain/neuronal damage.

I believe in medical settings it's delivered in a mixture with O2, but in recreational settings it's usually inhaled directly.

I see a lot more talk about the risks of vitamin B12 depletion, and not much talk about O2 deprivation, so not sure if everyone else is crazy or if it's me who is the crazy one.

elevaet··on A recent study suggests that insects branched out from crustaceans
Hippos don't come from the whale branch, but they share a branch with whales. From wikipedia:

> It is unknown whether the last common ancestor of whales and hippos led an aquatic, semiaquatic/amphibious, or terrestrial lifestyle

However, whales are a great example of a clade that went land -> water in their evolutionary history.

What a great point to remember

The world will become more resilient, but this could easily be a lose-lose for USA and other democratic nations.

I agree that it's poor form at least in the context of HN - we want to be able to trace the "commit history"

> this is like Brexit but 1000x

This sums up what I've been thinking too - it looks like the USA is sick of being the center of the world and is stepping down from the position right now.

I guess this means it's China's moment. :/

How can we change this? I want so desperately to live in a world where capital takes a back seat but have trouble seeing the path to that.

What you said could be true, but it's overshadowed by the fact that this is blatant corruption.
elevaet··on On David Lynch's Revenge of the Jedi (2018)
I'd definitely be more interested in seeing the storyboard than the AI generated movie. I guess that says something about how I/we value of AI generated content
elevaet··on On David Lynch's Revenge of the Jedi (2018)
+1 for Jodorowsky's Dune. It's a fascinating study of "the greatest sci fi movie never made". You can see its DNA in Star Wars, Bladerunner, Alien and more.

I hope some day Moebius and Jodorowsky's storyboards are published in the public domain

Are acid flashbacks real? I thought that was an urban myth.. I've never had one and I don't think I've ever encountered someone who has. It seems like one of those drug war era scare tactics or viral rumours.

But as the block rewards diminish from halving it will approach 0, so that will leave the only incentive for "miners" to secure the network to be transaction fees. At that point transaction fees will have to be extemely high to justify all that hash power right? So I can imagine it could get to the point where transaction fees exceed the value held in some wallets and you get stranded assets.

Alternatively, if transaction fees stay low, there might be very little incentive to secure the network with hash power and you could end up with fewer and fewer miners controlling the network and a 51% attack becomes quite feasible.

I'm really curious how this will play out over the next 100 years.

elevaet··on El Salvador abandons Bitcoin as legal tender
No, I get it, thank you very much. Early adopter of BTC here, I've read the whitepaper and all that, sodl when I realized what an energy pig it had become.

The only thing that separates BTC from all the derivative shitcoins is hype and stories we tell about it. Bitcoin is itself interchangeable with an infinite number of related algorithms/schemes.

Gold extraction definitely has its problems, but it's a fundamental element of the universe.

In 100 years, I know which one will definitely still hold value.

elevaet··on El Salvador abandons Bitcoin as legal tender
There is an infinite supply of computer algorithms. Gold is an element.
elevaet··on El Salvador abandons Bitcoin as legal tender
I'm so curious what will happen as mining approaches the asymptote. When the mining rewards become more and more rare and if people aren't incentivizing the network with a lot of transactions, will transaction times just get slower and slower until it becomes a stranded asset?
elevaet··on El Salvador abandons Bitcoin as legal tender after failed experiment
It also needs to scale well, which bitcoin doesn't. This is evidenced by the ever increasing energy demand, slow transaction times and high fees.
