electic··on Some of China's greatest advances depend heavily on local conditions
I think the main issue might be language. For companies, the english block is a huge benefit. If I launch a company in the UK, I have customers in Canada, India, United States, Australia, and New Zealand right of the back. I can then focus on refining the product and get into the mindset of making the product better for different international audiences.

Secondly, the english block tends to have a similar legal and regulatory mindset in dealing with companies. The Chinese system seems opaque and hard to understand for outsiders and for good reason. There is a lot of government influence and thinking that shapes Chinese products which doesn't appear elsewhere. That is a huge disadvantage.

When you consider all the of the other issues a young company face, having a huge multi-national singular language and somewhat similar regulatory framework is helpful in getting started.

electic··on Elon Musk: Falcon Heavy's first payload will be my Tesla Roadster to Mars
Maybe I am not reading this right. However, it seems he wants to put a Tesla Roadster in orbit of Mars? If so, that is a terrible idea. Our own planet has so much space junk floating around that it is becoming unmanageable and actually harming future launches. Why ruin the orbit of another planet? I certainly hope this car has some sort of de-orbiting mechanism.
electic··on Bitcoin ‘Ought to Be Outlawed,’ Nobel Prize Winner Stiglitz Says
Some of the smartest people I know work on Wall St. and when the topic comes up of cryptocurrencies the conversation turns to outright borderline anger and instant dismissal. They simply don't believe it can have any useful value as a store of value or be used for exchanging goods or services.

I have seen this reaction twice before. First, I see it when we talk about politics. People on the other side just can't believe it when facts are presented that refute their belief.

The second, is when the internet came about. Talking to people in different industries about how it could be used to revolutionize video, news, and just about everything often resulted in a reaction of dismissal.

Wall St. is a deeply ingrained industry and Bitcoin, Ethereum, etc are already sucking a big chunk of transactions from NYSE and everyone on Wall St looses. So it is a natural reaction to dismiss it.

CoinHub 2 is coming out and it will have a built in real-time FOREX engine in it and do automatic conversion for quotes and your portfolio.

CoinHub 2 hits the wires in December https://coinhubapp.com. Website has a lot of great shots and more info.

CojnHub 1 is already on the App Store. Both versions have aggregate quotes from 40 exchanges, currency flow info, news, reddit integration and designed to be professional grade from the ground up.

electic··on Quickly craft clean, responsive kinetic emails
Interesting. Thanks! Will take it for a spin.
electic··on Quickly craft clean, responsive kinetic emails
This is good. However, I think MJML is far more advanced. It has a lot of responsive components and even has a native desktop editor to quickly craft emails.

Overall, I find MJML also abstracts a lot more HTML markup making the whole experience less error prone.

electic··on Atlantic salmon swim far and wide after fish farm collapse
It is too bad the reason for why they never take hold is never really outlined in the article. Is it the environment? Or some other species that prevents eggs from taking hold?

Either way, sounds like most most of these will also share the same fate.

electic··on Facebook's Aggressive Moves on Startups Threaten Innovation
The bigger issue is that they bring in startups, have them tell them everything, and then decide not to buy the company. There are many stories floating around about this and it is highly unethical.
electic··on AMD Announces 307% Increase in Q3 Earnings
I agree. The new guidance is still higher than the last Q4, however, it is still lower than what was forecasted.
electic··on AMD Announces 307% Increase in Q3 Earnings
In this particular case, it has nothing to do with the earnings of the previous quarter. The stock is down after hours due to guidance for the current quarter. Investors were not expecting a 15% drop in revenue in Q4.

Personally, think most investors are over-reacting and this is a good thing to keep analyst expectations in check. They are really getting out of hand with some of their forecasts on quarter to quarter performance.

electic··on Bitcoin has crossed $6,000 USD for the first time
Oh, I totally agree. It is not too late at all to buy now. However mining, can't do it as an individual.
electic··on Bitcoin has crossed $6,000 USD for the first time
If it makes anyone feel better. When the Bitcoin whitepaper came out, I read it and thought it was neat. Then came the first mining program and I installed it on my computer and it ran the CPU up. I said, "This is dumb." and uninstalled it.

Huge mistake.

electic··on Disqus Security Alert: User Info Breach
For me, I use pass cli. Gets the job done.
electic··on Disqus Security Alert: User Info Breach
This is a good time to remind everyone to use a password manager and to have each password generated. Each service should have it's own password so if it gets compromised, your exposure is limited to that one service.

It is clear this is going to be a staple of internet life, so might as well be prepared.

electic··on Show HN: CoinHub for iOS
Hi,

There is a open source project here:

https://github.com/Herb-Sun/OKKLineSwift

but I had to fix a ton of issues to get it to work with multiple currencies at the same time.

electic··on Show HN: CoinHub for iOS
It is funny, this is the first thing I did but I found two big problems:

1. The data is delayed or it is pulling from one exchange.

2. The graph on stocks isn't too great.

3. Not all the coins are covered.

4. The news, it turns out, doesn't work too well for crypto. There is a huge community factor:

- There are publications.

- There are developers

- There are government developments.

So to capture all that, you need a richer set of sources to filter through.

electic··on Show HN: CoinHub for iOS
There is a portfolio feature coming that will show gain loss and it will work across multiple currency pairs as well. So for example, you can buy XMR <> BTC, or ETH <> USD and it will do all the math and figure out the gain loss in the fiat of your choice. We are working on it.

Hi,

The way it works today:

1M will show you 60 data points with 1 minute precision.

1H will show you 60 data points with 1 hour precision.

1D will show you 50 data points with 1 day precision.

But happy to hear feedback on the time chooser.

electic··on Show HN: CoinHub for iOS
Hi HN,

I bought my first Bitcoin and Ethereum. Like many of you know, cryptocurrency is traded 24/7/365. So the first thing I did was go to the App Store and look for some great quote and news apps so I can stay connected to what is happening in the markets.

What I found was disappointing. There weren’t many apps and the ones I did find were terribly designed, didn’t cover all the exchanges, didn’t plot out trend lines clearly, didn’t have news, and weren’t realtime. If you are doing anything with cryptocurrency, having this at your finger tips is a must.

So I began to write a simple, yet stylish, app that would just tell me the quote of currencies I had invested in. I hope you like it. If you have feedback or questions, let me know!

electic··on Why Does Sweden Have So Many Startups?
Getting of the ground is key. Before you can raise VC money, you have to have traction. This increasingly includes seed financing as well. So either way, you have to take a huge risk to start a company where the outcome is uncertain.

When you run into a founder or work for one in the US, realize the absolute big risk they are taking. People in Sweden have a safety net to catch them. The result is people are more willing to take risks to start something and you also see more innovative startups that would otherwise be considered high risk in the US by founders.

electic··on Bluetooth and Wi-Fi Aren't Fully Disabled When Off in iOS 11 Control Center
If you force touch the settings icon on your home screen, you will see Wifi, Bluetooth, etc. Just tap the menu item to go right to the settings screen.
electic··on Bluetooth and Wi-Fi Aren't Fully Disabled When Off in iOS 11 Control Center
For anyone that is running into this. The quickest way to get into settings so you can turn these radios off is to force touch the settings icon. Once you do that, you will see the different radios in the menu. You can simply tap into it and toggle the radio off. This, of course, assumes you have force touch enabled iPhone.

For what it is worth, this is a big privacy violation. I am really surprised you can't at least force touch on the control center and turn these things off. I hope someone at Apple is reading this and adds that back in.

Sounds like they made the right choice because the platform collapsed. It makes no sense spending design and dev time on a platform that simply isn't taking off.

These are amazing images. Images aside, photographers like these put their lives in danger everyday to get images like these.

I would gladly donate. Also, would be neat if they also took Bitcoin and Ethereum as a donation option.
