elashri··on DeepSeek Elastic Compute (DSec)
I think the number is ~2930 authors according to the CDS [1] which is comparable to the corresponding CMS paper which has about ~2900 authors [2]

elashri··on PipePipe: NewPipe hard fork implementing SponsorBlock
This app and previously NewPipe is the main thing I miss after moving to iOS. I really can't stand ads (including organic ads that SponsorBlock deal with).
elashri··on .name Termination
I think it was figure of speech. The domain is registered until 2036

elashri··on All CERN accelerators now on the road to HiLumi
Most of people actually call Hi Lumi era as run 4 (as it said in the article too) then run 5 (Assuming that all experiments lives to run for a fifth run). And that's okay because everyone inside CERN knows that run 4 run is a Hi Lumi run however, maybe it is better to communicate it the way they do here.
elashri··on A third world engineer responds to “RISC-V: They should have known better”
When the term started out, There was nothing called United States (As a country or its current culture/s). And I am not sure if this happens outside the US anyway.
elashri··on Firefox is now the last major browser that still supports uBlock Origin
Automated checks are done for every extension on every update. But their recommend extensions they feature on the Extension store, they do other extensive checks for each update.

elashri··on AFC Stands in Solidarity with UEFA and Concacaf to Protect the FIFA World Cup
What would be a huge news for me is if the CAF which is probably competing with FIFA on the corruptest sports organization come in support.

Is that normal?

elashri··on Back to Kagi
Author here (I didn't submit the post though)

Actually I did not solve it. I find the alternatives is worse. Google News seems better but my news reading is not a main activity.

Also I live ib Switzerland and don't speak French and I hate when websites like Google always assumes that (being logged solves it but then we have privacy issues too)

Nowadays I just go to the arabic version of Aljazeera and skim the headlines for quick overview on what is happening.

elashri··on GitHub suddenly rejected my SSH key (the fix was a .pub file?)
To be honest, the "mathematically sound" is a widely used jargon used in many academic fields (physics, mathematics from first hand experience). It is also more meaningful than people who would use "nice function" to mean a function that follow some criteria in their head (and you would need to guess what these will be).
elashri··on Kimi K3, and what we can still learn from the pelican benchmark
Arabic native speaker here.

Yes, people will usually post or draw a bicycle right to left which is going to ve opposite of what normally is drawn. I tried the prompt in arabic for many models and I don't recall any adjusting it based on that difference at least culturally speaking.

elashri··on AWS: Inaccurate Estimated Billing Data – $1.7 billion
one USD is about 362 Zimbabwean dollars. So it would still be about ~53 trillion dollars which is more than the nominal GDP of US and China combined.
elashri··on CERN bids farewell to the LHC and enters Long Shutdown 3
CERN stopped hiring non member or associate member states citizens for some time now. Except in very rare circumstances, This applies to US citizens as much as Russians too.

You might disagree on that but we all know that it was political pressure.

elashri··on The best thing that has ever happened for multiplayer games
I have no knowledge in the field. But it would be nice if the article compared the raw prices of usual bare metal offering vs cloud because I am not sure it would support the claim that the egress would be the highest cost.

Of course it could be but a quantitative perspective for an average game would have been much better.

elashri··on Tell HN: OpenAI has started putting ads on paid programs
Are the ads static or appear in a way that would make them recognized easily so that a uBlock Origin rules remove them?
elashri··on We're making Bunny DNS free: because a faster internet won't build itself
I think it is a step in the right direction for bunny to be a competitive for the people on hobby/self hosting. But I think that having a free tier for CDN is what makes cloudflare attractive (Among other things).
elashri··on OpenAI DayBreak – GPT-5.5-Cyber
I think if nothing happens from the government, then this would be a very good example of the benefit of keeping your mouse shut especially if you are lying to get some hype like Anthropic did for months.
elashri··on Windows 11 New Media Player Uses 3.5x More RAM, Charges for Popular Video Codecs

Thanks for this term, I vote for it to be the technical term of the last decade.

elashri··on Malware developers added nuclear and biological weapons text to to their spyware
If you have a resources of a nuclear weapons program. You can afford to fine tune or train a domain specific model to act on your encyclopedia.
elashri··on Malware developers added nuclear and biological weapons text to to their spyware
I still don't know why all these concern about nuclear weapons with LLMs. It is not that if an entity (A country) wants to develop a nuclear weapons that the resources they need for such a program and huge infrastructure and scientific enterprise would need an LLM to teach them anything. Knowing how to develop one is not a closed secret but getting in secret is impossible without the whole world knowing.

So I wouldn't be able to develop a nuclear weapons with the resources of drug cartal (as an example) using Claude in secret.

elashri··on Chrome is looking to permanently drop MV2 extension
Ctrl + shift + R would solve your second problem at all times.

And I don't think your first point is quantified correctly and I am sure there is no data to back it up. But I understand the appeal of trying to quantify your personal experience.

elashri··on Castor: CERN Advanced STORage Manager
I was just commenting based on the cliche that Italians are everywhere at CERN. So you will always hear Italian language.
elashri··on Castor: CERN Advanced STORage Manager
I would say "Italian" :)
elashri··on U.S. to dismantle system tracking Atlantic currents that are at risk of collapse
Where did you get that the number of federally funded graduate students is 3.1 million?

Note that many will have industry, international or self funded (for MS it is less common to have funding). The 9B figure for maintaining the F35 you just said is very close to the entire annual budget of the NSF. Which is the main funding source of most of non medical research.

Also we are not talking about military budget, just the F35 maintenance program here.

elashri··on YouTube to automatically label AI-generated videos
The problem is that it doesn't even respect this choice. My native language is not English and most of the videos in this languages will be auto transcript to English. Even the last time I changed both the language and country and YouTube still managed to auto transcript to English.

The solution is a simple toggle to turn it off, not pushing it to our throat.

elashri··on Bitwarden scrubs 'Always free' and 'Inclusion' values from its site
Now I started to worry about their clients openness to work with valultwarden. They also said in the past they will not change the behavior to not accept third party servers. But who knows now.
elashri··on MIT: 20% drop in incoming graduate students
It is mainly because of federal funding cuts that departments accept fewer students as written in the actual text. But I might add that the changes of immigration and the changes in foreign policy might played a rule. There are no mention of AI at all.
