ekurutepe··on Mathematicians aim to take publishers out of publishing
There has been many open/free publications in the scientific community. The basic idea is that if most of the work (writing, formatting, reviewing and selecting) is done by researchers for free anyway, why should the same researchers (or their institutions) pay for the privilege of accessing these papers.

Such efforts remain marginal because in my experience the tenured professor who decides which work to publish where tends to select well established commercial outlets which supposedly have a better name/impact/reputation/fame and all that goes with it.

It seems like it went down again. I'm getting the DB error as well.
ekurutepe··on Turkish government agency spoofed Google certificate “accidentally”
It might be plausible that the CA issued the subsidiary CA cert to a government agency due to incompetency, it is very hard to chalk it up to a 'mistake', if that said government agency uses the accidentally issued CA cert on their SSL intercepting firewall. What a convenient accident...
ekurutepe··on 24-bit color sucks
I can't see the gradient step on my 13" MBA as hard as I try. Those extra bits would definitely be wasted on me.
ekurutepe··on PayMill, Stripe clone, rolls out silently across Europe
Probably simply because they're not officially recognized by the EU.
ekurutepe··on Objective-C in The Cloud
This is amazing! Where do we apply for beta tester accounts? :)

Well, technically it doesn't have to be Apple hardware. They could be running hackintoshes, which would obviously be against the EULA of OSX. Another possibility is virtualization. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong but I think the OSX Server EULA allows virtualization since 10.7. So setup any linux server off the shelf and virtualize OSX Server instances on it and you have your cloud building blocks.
ekurutepe··on Highly relativistic spaceflight would be fatal for passengers and instruments
Reminds me of how the experts argued that the passengers would die of suffocation, if trains were to go faster than 50mph, back in the 19th century.

If we could figure out how to approach light speed, I'm sure we can also figure out how to shield people and electronics from harm.

ekurutepe··on Show HN: Non-Confusing, Visually Correct Slider Toggle UI
Somehow the blog post does not even mention the iOS sliders, let alone compare the solution Apple figured out for this problem: colors. Grey is OFF, blue is ON.
ekurutepe··on Apple's poisonous touch silently kills the GNOMEs of the Linux forest
Can please explain the relation between the title and the article? How did Apple kill Gnome, again?
