ejr··on How do you promote a new idea?
You still have another chance. I looked at your site and looks like you have an intro video there, but it only shows how to get started with the site, not the background of the site.

Why not create a separate page - "about" maybe - and post a link to it? Be as descriptive as possible about why you created it, how it's useful to people and who you hope will use it to the fullest.

Then, post your link with the title "Show HN: Somevid" or something similar. As long as you have "Show HN" in the front of the title, it will show up in that section of the site.

Remember to be descriptive and try to relate as clearly as possible what you want to accomplish with the site.

ejr··on Comcast Customers Recording Call Receive Preferential Treatment
These ISPs all record their calls for "quality assurance purposes", so the idea that there's no record outside of the customer's own to whatever they promised is ludicrous. If we're not doing so already, I think it's time to keep records of all our calls.

I believe there are some places where this might be a legal hiccup, but I'm not sure if those rules still apply if the other party informs you that they're recording it themselves.

ejr··on Ask HN: Where is the PHP community?
Well, there's PHP Conference http://phpconference.com And also Northeastern http://www.northeastphp.org/

I don't know of it's too late to get tickets yet since these are late October and September. It's good to check up on these early in the year, just in case.

Edit: On Northeastern, you can check out last years highlights to see if this is what you're looking for http://2013.northeastphp.org/

ejr··on How do you promote a new idea?
I suppose the first step would be to discuss the idea. What do you have in mind? Who do you want to target?
ejr··on How to bypass Zeus Trojan’s self protection mechanism
Tinsey nitpick: It's Spammers. There is no apostrophe before the plural 's'. The graphic has it correct.

Sorry, that bothers me :-)

The rest of the article was fascinating.

ejr··on Ask HN: Who isn't in the software industry/not a hacker?
I'm mostly an office worker and make crafts at home that I sell online - most boring daytime endeavour yet. I too am a "wantrepreneur" and I'm thinking of getting something started soon. Nothing "tech" though.

From the community, I get a surprising amount of non-tech/hacker news, stories and comments and new insights about life and work that I didn't imagine otherwise.

ejr··on The Wyvern Programming Language
I took this to mean code correctness and thus a measure of stability and security as added benefits. Generally assurance implies some level of confidence that the application will behave predictably even in the face of unpredictable inputs and will revert to sane defaults whenever possible.
ejr··on Russia now requires public WiFi hotspot operators to collect user passport data
There are several ideas in play that skirt this idea, however none have widespread adoption as far as I'm aware https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wireless_mesh_network

Frequency hopping, spread-spectrum technologies have been around for quite a while now and a few have seen adoption in the open market, but again, these are fewer and far in-between most other accepted technologies. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frequency-hopping_spread_spect...

ejr··on Lightspeed – A Browser Experiment
I had a flashback to the days of web portals. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, I like that they're trying something because complacency is never a good thing. You have to try things to see if they work.

I think the biggest allure of this is that there are people with simple needs that want their technology to "just work" as they said. I also agree with owlish's comment in that there are some quirks that need rapid alleviation that aren't being addressed like click-to-play and dropping extensions doesn't seem like a good way to approach this.

I applaud the experimentation so long as the end results are choices we can make for ourselves.

ejr··on Choose Firefox Now, Or Later You Won't Get A Choice
This may sound like heresy, but I think Internet Explorer has the right balance between tab space and the URL bar. It's not perfect, but it is smaller than in Firefox and Chrome, while still being usable.

I'm waiting for a complete "Sane" plugin in Firefox that has all the modifications you mentioned rolled into one.

ejr··on Choose Firefox Now, Or Later You Won't Get A Choice
There are halo benefits to the side projects as well. Some experimental or otherwise "daring" functionality in a side project can become invaluable within the browser core at a future date. It's a bit like an external stimulus triggering a random mutation that proves to be beneficial.

Ex: Popup blocking required modification to the browser before it became a vital core feature.

ejr··on Long Island Weather Observer Sets U.S. Record With 84-Year Streak
Funny you mention, I did have a similar project on the back burner. The following were all the measurements that were supposed to be sent back in CSV format :

  "station","town","district","lon","lat","elev","temp","dew","humid","mbar","wspeed","wdir","precip","start","end","status"
Lon, lat and elev are longitude, latitude and elevation of course and start, end were UNIX timestamps. I had an idea to have it send data back every 5 minutes to avoid the jet exhaust anomaly problem mentioned in the article. I could safely discard the outliers and store the rest.

Sadly, this never got off the ground as I never had the time to build it.

ejr··on Long Island Weather Observer Sets U.S. Record With 84-Year Streak
My dad did years ago while in good health, but it's quite hard to keep up with family obligations and such. This makes his feat even more astounding.

This kind of tenacity reminds me of Marion Stokes whose story was linked here before http://www.fastcompany.com/3022022/the-incredible-story-of-m...

If anyone is curious, the particular station style - box - he has his instruments housed in is called a "Stevenson screen" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stevenson_screen

It's has double-louvers on all four sides and usually has an opening in the bottom as well. The idea is to protect the instruments from the weather while still allowing plenty of exposure to it.

ejr··on How we turn $199 Chromebooks into Ubuntu-based code learning machines for kids
If you're on OSX, there's Lime Text, which is Open Source http://limetext.org . Linux cross compile is apparently working and a Windows version is in the works as well.

ejr··on Justin.tv has shut down
The Archive project has been busy getting these as quickly as possible. https://archive.org/details/justintv You may find a lot of those videos have been saved. I think there was a limit on which videos were actually saved as those with no views or only few were not selected.
ejr··on UK judge says ‘freedom of information’ means choice of digital file format
"Open" is still a very new concept in government. While words like "oversight" and "transparency" have floated around parliament, there was still very little precedence previously and old, ingrained, attitudes and methodologies take a while to change. Systems and minds need quite a bit of rewiring for this to work.
ejr··on New York hotel fines guests $500 for bad reviews on Yelp
A lot of the reviews now are purely trolling. Streisand effect in full swing, but I expect many of these will be removed by Yelp since they aren't from people who were actually guests. I'm sure that violates Yelp's TOS as well.

The owners stole one sock from every single pair I brought with me.
When I complained the manager showed up at my door with all my socks
stapled to his body and said I was being delusional.

Also none of the rooms have beds.
ejr··on My Synology NAS has been hacked by ransomware calling itself Synolocker
If modern routers are delegated to router duty only, this wouldn't be a problem. However, routers these days are for all intents and purposes, specialised home servers with shared media streaming and the like as well. These are value-added functionalities ISPs use to entice new users and I'm sure a fair number of them use these to store photos, connect their USB drives - mine is also a print server for use with non-wifi network printers.
ejr··on The Great Colorado Weed Experiment
My news is a bit delayed, but from what I know of WA, the political atmosphere is a bit frayed. Local government is hampered by a complex web of bureaucracy and the state government may not be willing to play along.

I'm sure there are plenty of people there that want to follow the same example, but they may not have enough momentum to organize and push through as CO did.

ejr··on The Great Colorado Weed Experiment
Bootleggers in the old American cities didn't suddenly stop serving their clients after prohibition ended either. Legalisation is very new and there aren't enough dispensaries to bring the price down. The article itself mentions :

As more legal recreational dispensaries and growers enter the market, the market
will do what it does with greater competition: adjust. Prices will fall.
The illegal market will shrink accordingly.
ejr··on ButterDB
Thank you. I would use it right now actually as I do have some spreadsheets with Google. There are some I'd rather use locally like this and it would be just a nice extra. It would also avoid the need to maintain a network connection.
ejr··on ButterDB
Thanks for writing this. Do you have plans to extend this to any locally stored spreadsheets? Ex: Excel, Calc (Libre and Open Office) and so on. I imagine even XML based documents would still present some vendor quirks to overcome.
ejr··on Paypal has not been sending payment notifications to merchants
Yes, exactly. When I tell people where they need to send funds, their first question is "do you have a PayPal account?" Western Union, Moneygram and such are all highly inconvenient for both parties.

And services like Stripe aren't an option for me due to their restrictions on use as well https://stripe.com/us/prohibited_businesses

My work covers multiple items on that list. Compare that to PayPal's https://www.paypal.com/webapps/mpp/ua/useragreement-full#9

Edit: I should mention, of Strip's list of "prohibited businesses", nothing I do is illegal or unethical. Just in case I gave that impression.

ejr··on Paypal has not been sending payment notifications to merchants
As much as people complain about them, I still haven't found a service that matches their reach or ease. Let's face it, PP is a de-facto bank without any of the regulations, requirements or safeguards.
ejr··on The Business of Fake Hollywood Money
> James Randi, in his wild, younger days, would spray real bills with spray starch to cause a little chaos at the bank.

Terrifyingly devious while causing no physical harm. I wonder if pranksters these days are just as imaginative. Or perhaps the environment is less conducive toward appropriate penalties.

ejr··on USPS Redesign

nobody cares about this in this thread.
I care.

The branding, no matter how good looking it is - and it is good - must in the end enhance the product. But if the product itself is confusing, the branding and styles can only do so much. Concise product goals make the work of the designer more focused and the end result would be beautiful to use as well as look at.

ejr··on Conway's Multiplayer Game of Life
Ah yes, a hover state to show the owner's cells would be perfect.
ejr··on Conway's Multiplayer Game of Life
I seem to have lost my bits :-) Somewhere out there are 2 blue boxes that I can't tell apart from a sea of other blue boxes.

This is thoroughly fun!

ejr··on A Nuclear Probe to Explore Earth’s Interior
I imagined to be like ice which does make crackling noises when it freezes due to expansion, except cooling rocks will shrink causing the same. Re-solidifying rock would probably sound louder and the acoustic signature may travel further.
