ejolto··on Testing Phone-Sized Faraday Bags
Depends what the tin and shaker are made of. The tin is probably made of aluminum which has a higher skin depth than stainless steel, which I assume the shaker cups are made of. A Faraday cage of continuous surface needs walls that are thicker than the skin depth of the material the cage is made of. Since the skin depth of stainless steel is lower, the cage wall thickness can be lower while still creating an effective Faraday cage compared to an aluminum cage.

ejolto··on Bar-tailed Godwits regularly travel more than 7,000 miles non-stop
A trained human can also run 100+ miles per day. The world record is 309.399 km (191.879 miles) for men [1].

ejolto··on Organ transplant patients may not get dementia
You tend to get Alzheimer's after you are done having children, so resistance wouldn't evolve.
ejolto··on Mosquito saliva alone has profound effects on the human immune system (2018)
Greenland shark reach sexual maturity at 150 years, and can live for over 400 years according to Wikipedia.
ejolto··on 94% of Adults in England Have Covid-19 Antibodies
It's probably 62% of the entire population including children, and 80% of adults.
ejolto··on How to Be a Stoic (2016)
> The short of it is: nothing is good or bad, but things can be too much or too little. Where the line is depends or circumstances and is different every time. And the correct answer is mostly only available in hindsight if it is at all.

That sounds like a very stoic point of view, reminds me of Marcus Aurelius's meditations. It's worth a read.

ejolto··on EA got hacked and games source code leaked including new game Battlefield 2042
Maybe EA writes their games in brainfuck.
ejolto··on On Smoking
That sounds like a lot to me, almost once a week. Then again it's normal to drink that often without being considered an alcoholic.
ejolto··on On Smoking
I've smoked tobacco on somewhere between 5 and 15 occasions over a decade since becoming an adult, but I didn't become a daily smoker or addicted to smoking. Am I just an extreme outlier?
ejolto··on The Spacefaring Paradox
Or that Valeri Polyakov spent 437 consecutive days on the MIR space station.
ejolto··on Are we screening too much for skin cancer? It's complicated
This one is even more relevant as he talks about dangers of over screening for beast cancer, and side effects of mastectomy+chemo:

ejolto··on The health benefits of better air
What I gather from this is that I should stop broiling fish and start smoking cigarettes instead.

I'm in a European country and no one uses whatsapp here. I have it but only to talk to foreing friends.
ejolto··on Once on the brink of eradication, syphilis is raging again
Thanks for providing a source, I was unaware that this was a recommendation by the WHO.
ejolto··on Once on the brink of eradication, syphilis is raging again
Should you be giving this kind of medical advice on HN?
ejolto··on Denmark to permanently cease using AstraZeneca vaccine
[2] states:

> ten cases of blood clots have been found in Denmark in people subsequent to taking the AstraZeneca vaccine.

and later,

> A total of 140,000 people in Denmark have received at least one dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine.

If you extrapolate these numbers you would expect ~410 patients with blood clots from AZ if you gave the vaccine to everyone in Denmark.

ejolto··on MiSTer, an open-source FPGA gaming project
You can't just ignore the fact that the average gamer doesn't have an FPGA. For such a game you would have to ship the FPGA with the game, making it prohibitively expensive.
ejolto··on Richard Stallman is coming back to the board of the FSF
Also Scandinavian and I agree with you. Also Americans lying about these things are often seen as being fake and thus rude.
ejolto··on Mac SE/30 logicboard recreation
The caps in your linked photo are 47μF. The orange squares in the jumper wire photo are 47μF tantalum capacitors, that won't leak. You don't need those big cylindrical ones for such low capacitances anymore.

ejolto··on The Kilobyte’s Gambit
This statement doesn't make much sense to me. Is there a theoretical limit to the length of DNA, or do you mean that human DNA is ~100MB?

The human genome is about 6.4 billion base pairs, where each base pair is represented by the letters: Adenine (A), Thymine (T), Cytosine (C), and Guanine (G), i.e. 2-bits. 6,4 billion is then 6.4E9*2 = 1.28E10 bits = 1.28E10/8 bytes = 1600 MB. Or 800 MB if you count the bases as pairs of two.

Polychaos dubium's DNA is over 200 times as long as human DNA[0].

ejolto··on The Mars Helicopter Is Online and Getting Ready to Fly
In addition to SEUs (single event upsets) which are bit flips, there are also the following Single Event Effects (See) that are destructive:

- Single Event Burnout, SEB

- Single Event Gate Rupture, SEGR

- Single Event Latch-up, SEL these can be recoverable

In addition there are also Total Ionizing Dose (TID) Effects https://radhome.gsfc.nasa.gov/radhome/tid.htm

ejolto··on Falling sperm counts, declining egg quality, and endocrine disruptors
Thanks for the advice! I buy the puré in glass jars.
ejolto··on Falling sperm counts, declining egg quality, and endocrine disruptors
We are talking about an anecdote here, not giving general advice based on scientific literature.

That said. If I lived in a village that was attacked by tigers regularly for 6 months, and I installed a tiger filter which stopped the attacks, I would gladly pay 30 bucks for that ($30 is what a faucet water filter costs).

Disclaimer: I don't own a water filter or a tiger filter.

ejolto··on Falling sperm counts, declining egg quality, and endocrine disruptors
Not OP but I do this by avoiding processed foods, making everything "from scratch".

Examples:

- Pizza sauce from crushed tomatoes, tomato puré and spices.

- Marinade for marinating meat from spices and olive oil and either balsamic vinegar or lime.

- Pick my own blueberries that I freeze and put in plain yoghurt.

ejolto··on Falling sperm counts, declining egg quality, and endocrine disruptors
> Is that enough?

It must have been enough since his sperm count increased 4x, no?

Either the filter worked or microplastics don't effect sperm count much.

ejolto··on Why Birds Don’t Get Cold Feet
No don't, you're going to be in for a bad time if you wear cotton as a base layer in -10C weather.

If you wear cotton socks and they get wet you might lose tour toes.

Most wool is definitely not polyester. At least not in Scandinavia.

ejolto··on Is Spacetime Real?
If you're talking about what you can feel, what you can smell, what you can taste and see, then real is simply electrical signals interpreted by your brain.

ejolto··on Medieval Cambridge skeletons reveal injuries to manual labourers
It's important to have data to back our unsurprising assumptions. Lots of unsurprising assumptions have turned out to be false.
